Saturday . . .

D Dean Arsene is in the NHL. Arsene (Regina, Edmonton/Kootenay, 1996-2001) has been recalled by the Edmonton Oilers from the AHL’s Springfield Falcons. Arsene is the Falcons’ captain after spending six seasons with the Hershey Bears and winning two AHL Calder Cup titles with them. He has played 333 AHL games.

F Matt Lowry is changing leagues. Lowry (Medicine Hat, Brandon, 2005-09) has been recalled by the AHL’s Binghamton Senators from the ECHL’s Elmira Jackals. Lowry had 77 points in 71 games with Brandon last season. This will be his second stint this season with Binghamton. The first one lasted just one game.

The Vancouver Giants will be without D Kevin Connauton when they meet the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday. He drew a one-game suspension for his part in a late-game fracas with the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Friday. And it turns out that Giants owner Ron Toigo isn’t happy about the suspension. For more on that, visit Steve Ewen’s blog, The Dub Hub, over there on the left. . . . The Rebels and Giants were hit with $500 fines, too, as it was the second line brawl of the season for each team.

F Ryan Kinasewich (Medicine Hat, Tri-City, 1998-2004) had three goals and two assists Saturday, leading the host Utah Grizzlies to an 8-3 ECHL victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers. In the second period he overtook Chris Taylor as the Utah franchise’s all-time leading scorer with points Nos. 278 and 279.

Risto Pakarinen, an international hockey journalist, has speculated on the team he thinks will represent Switzerland at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. His story is right here. . . . His team includes D Luca Sbisa of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and F Hnat Domenichelli (Kamloops, 1992-96), who recently got his Swiss passport. . . . The Swiss team is coached by Ralph Krueger (Calgary, New Westminster, 1978-79). In fact, Krueger has been the Swiss team's head coach since 1997.

In Portland, the Winterhawks erased a 2-0 first-period deficit and beat the Kelowna Rockets, 3-2. . . . The Winterhawks, who won 19, 11 and 17 games each of the last three season, are 15-7-0-0. . . . Kelowna (11-10-1-0) led 2-0 on goals from F Stepan Novotny, just 24 seconds into the game, and F Cody Chikie, at 4:29. . . . Novotny has 14 goals. . . . F Riley Boychuk got the winner, breaking a 2-2 tie at 4:14 of the third period. . . . F Luke Walker got his 12th goal late in the second for Portland. . . . Kelowna D Tyson Barrie had two assists, extending his point streak to 10 games. . . . The Rockets, who are 0-7 against U.S. Division teams, have lost five straight road games. . . . Attendance was 3,448. . . . Portland G Kurtis Mucha stopped 26 shots. He was backed up by Mac Carruth, 17, who left the NAHL’s Wenatchee Wild earlier in the week. . . . Mucha made his 6,000th career save during the second period. He is the seventh goaltender in WHL history to stop 6,000 shots. Danny Lorenz (Seattle, 1986-90) holds the record, at 6,958.

In Saskatoon, the Blades scored three second-period goals and beat the Prince George Cougars, 3-2. . . . F Charles Inglis scored a PP goal at 12:52 of the second period to break a 1-1 tie. . . . Prince George G Hudson Stremmel stopped 39 shots but his record fell to 0-6-1-0. . . . Saskatoon G Adam Morrison (10-3-0-3) turned aside 24 shots. . . . Attendance was 4,061. . . . The Blades improved to 18-3-0-3, while the Cougars are 3-17-1-1. . . . Saskatoon is on a 10-0-0-1 run and has the WHL‘s best winning percentage (.812). . . . Prince George concluded its seven-game road swing at 0-5-1-1.

In Moose Jaw, G Jeff Bosch stopped 27 shots to help the Warriors to a 5-0 victory over the Regina Pats. . . . The Warriors (15-8-0-0), who won only 19 games all of last season, swept the weekend doubleheader from the Pats as they won 4-3 in Moose Jaw on Friday. . . . Bosch has two shutouts this season and four in his career. . . . It was the third time the Pats have been blanked this season. . . . Moose Jaw F Antonin Honejsek, who scored two goals Friday, had a goal and two assists Saturday. . . . Regina G Damien Ketlo stopped 28 shots. . . . Moose Jaw was 2-for-5 on the PP; the Pats (10-11-2-0) were 0-for-2. . . . Attendance in the 2,705-seat Crushed Can was 2,804.

In Prince Albert, the Edmonton Oil Kings scored the game’s first two goals and went on to a 3-2 victory over the Raiders. . . . F Tomas Vincour, just off an ugly bout with the flu, scored his 11th goal at 8:47 of the third period to give Edmonton (8-11-2-3) a 3-1 lead. . . . F Michael St. Croix and F Dylan Wruck had given Edmonton a 2-0 lead with first-period goals 55 seconds apart. . . . The Raiders (11-11-0-2) got goals from F Craig McCallum, his 12th, and F Igor Revenko, his 14th. . . . Edmonton G Torrie Jung stopped 42 shots. . . . Attendance was 2,178.

In Cranbrook, F Dustin Sylvester set up three goals to help the Kootenay Ice to a 7-1 victory over the Tri-City Americans. . . . The Ice got goals from seven different players, including F Kevin King, who also had two assists. . . . D Joey Leach and F Brendan Hurle each scored his first WHL goal for the Ice (9-12-1-0). . . . King and F Steele Boomer each scored his seventh of the season. . . . The Ice led 2-0 and 4-0 at the intermissions. . . . Ice G Todd Mathews stopped 30 shots. . . . Tri-City G Brett Martyniuk made his second start of the season and left at 6:16 of the second with his side down 3-0. He stopped 11 shots. Drew Owsley came on to stop 19 of 23 shots. . . . Attendance was 2,608. . . . The Americans are 16-5-0-0. They have played 14 of 21 games on the road and now go home for a six-game homestand.

In Spokane, F Kyle Beach scored three times, the last one the 100th of his WHL career, as the Chiefs dropped the Kamloops Blazers, 6-1. . . . Spokane D Jared Spurgeon, playing his first game after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, had three assists. . . . Beach, who has 18 goals this season, also had an assist. It was his second three-goal game of the season. . . . Spokane F Mitch Wahl had a goal for the fifth straight game. . . . The Blazers now have lost three in a row and 10 of 12. . . . Kamloops (10-12-2-0) got its goal from F Shayne Wiebe, who tipped in a Colin Smith pass and then crashed into G James Reid. Wiebe was penalized for goaltender interference on the play, but the goal stood. . . . Spokane (11-7-1-0) had a 48-22 edge in shots. . . . Attendance was 8,321.

In Medicine Hat, F Bretton Cameron scored his 20th goal of the season as the Tigers doubled the Lethbridge Hurricanes, 4-2. . . . Bretton, 20, went into this season with 22 goals in 111 career games. . . . Medicine Hat G Tyler Bunz stopped 19 shots. . . . Lethbridge G Ville Kolppanen, in his first start since returning from a concussion, turned aside 29 shots. . . . Lethbridge F Carter Bancks cut into a 2-0 Medicine Hat lead by scoring on a second-period penalty shot. . . . Attendance was 4,006. . . . The victory was Willie Desjardins’ 300th as head coach of the Tigers. He is the franchise leader in that department. Desjardins, who also did a turn as head coach of the Saskatoon Blades, has 312 coaching victories in total. . . . The Tigers are 12-9-2-3, while the Hurricanes slipped to 8-13-2-0.

In Chilliwack, freshman F Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the first pick in the 2008 bantam draft, scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels dumped the Bruins, 5-2. . . . He has 12 goals this season. . . . F Willie Coetzee assisted on both Nugent-Hopkins’ goals. . . . F Ryan Howse opened the scoring for Chilliwack (8-12-1-3), with his 16th. . . . Howse opened the scoring at 4:57 of the first period. The Rebels (11-12-0-0) answered with three goals, two of them from Nugent-Hopkins, in a 7:19 span, before the period ended. . . . The third Red Deer goal came from F Colten Mayor. It was his first WHL goal. . . . Red Deer G Kraymer Barnstable stopped 34 shots. . . . Attendance was 3,428.

In Everett, G Calvin Pickard stopped 26 shots to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-0 victory over the Silvertips. . . . Seattle (7-12-1-3) has won three straight games, all on the road, and has seven points out of its last four games. . . . Everett is 12-6-1-0. . . . Pickard, a sophomore, has two shutouts this season and five in his career. . . . F Brendan Rouse had a goal and two assists. . . . Seattle LW Prab Rai didn’t get a point but was the game’s first star. He also was the first star Friday when Seattle beat the Blazers 7-2 in Kamloops. . . . Seattle F Jonathan Parker, who had three goals in Kamloops, got his 11th of the season to round out the scoring in Everett. . . . Rouse’s goal was shorthanded, 6:11 into the second period, and actually was scored by Everett G Kent Simpson into his own net. Rouse had cleared the puck from his zone and Simpson, in trying to pass the puck to a teammate, inadvertently deposited it into his own net. . . . Attendance was 8,347. . . . Seattle was 2-for-6 on the PP; Everett was 0-for-5.
