Pochiro shoots way out of PG doghouse

D Bryce Lampman (Kamloops, 2002-03) has signed for the rest of this season with Lørenskog (Norway, GET-Ligaen). This season, with Florida (ECHL), he had five points, including one goal, in eight games. . . .
F Kirill Starkov (Red Deer, 2006-07) has signed with Red Ice Martigny (Switzerland, NL B) for the rest of the season, with an option. (Red Ice contacted the Danish federation and inserted a termination clause should Starkov be suspended by the IIHF over a Danish betting case.)

George Johnson, the Calgary Herald’s sporting columnist, is one of Canada’s best wordsmiths. He was in attendance Sunday as the hometown Hitmen dropped a 3-2 OT decision to the Edmonton Oil Kings, and his report is right here.

Things appear to be going from bad to worse for the Kamloops Blazers. They have the WHL’s second-poorest record (11-33-5) and have only one victory in their last 10 outings. And now, as they prepare to play four games in five nights, they have lost two veterans to what they are calling “long-term injuries.”
F Luke Harrison, 18, suffered an undisclosed injury during a 4-0 loss to the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday. Harrison, who missed time earlier this season with a brain injury, was involved in a heavy collision with Tigers D Scott Allan at 14:13 of the third period. Harrison needed help from trainer Colin Robinson and left with gauze in his mouth.
One night earlier, F Tyson Ness, 20, suffered a broken jaw when struck by a puck during a 7-2 loss to the visiting Victoria Royals. Ness is expected to be lost for the remainder of the season, although he has told team officials that he badly wants to play in one more game.
The Blazers also are missing freshman F Eric Krienke and veteran F Matt Needham, their captain, with undisclosed injuries. According to the team, Krienke is out one to two weeks, while Needham is week-to-week.
With the injuries, the Blazers have added F Deven Sideroff, 16, to their roster for this week. He has 55 points, 26 of them goals, in 33 games with the midget prep team at the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
G Cole Kehler, 16, also has rejoined the Blazers and will stay with the team while G Justin Myles, who was acquired from the Seattle Thunderbirds at the trade deadline, recovers from an undisclosed injury. Kehler also attends the Okanagan Hockey Academy and plays for the midget prep team for whom he has a 19-4 record. He has gotten into six games with the Blazers this season.
The Blazers are at home to the Spokane Chiefs on Tuesday night, then visit the Giants in Vancouver on Wednesday. F Quinn Benjafield, the Blazers’ first pick, 19th overall, in the 2013 bantam draft, is expected to make his WHL debut in Vancouver, which happens to be his hometown. Benjafield, 15, has 34 points, including 14 goals, in 27 games with the major midget Vancouver-North West Giants.
---
The ECHL’s San Francisco Bulls folded on Monday. The Bulls had an ECHLaffiliation with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. . . . “We regret to inform you that the SF Bulls are ceasing operations, effective immediately,” president/GM/head coach Pat Curcio wrote to season-ticket holders. “The team was hoping to secure new ownership, however the terms of an updated deal were unable to be finalized, cancelling the remainder of the season.” . . . Included on the roster was D Kalvin Sagert (Kamloops, Lethbridge, Regina, 2002-08). Sagert now is an unrestricted free agent, as are any Bulls players who don’t have AHL or NHL contracts.

Ron Judd of the Seattle Times starts your Super Bowl preparations -- it’s the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos on Sunday -- with a piece that includes this: “Denver’s Gates Corporation is the world’s largest producer of automotive belts and hoses. Seattle’s Gates Foundation is the world’s largest curer of global hunger and disease.” . . . There’s more right here.
---

The Portland Winterhawks, who have won seven in a row, have earned 17 of a possible 18 points since Jan. 4. . . . Portland F Brendan Leipsic has 20 points in the nine games he has played since serving a seven-game suspension. He has 63 points in 38 games this season. . . . If you were wondering, the Winterhawks are 5-0-0 since D Mathew Dumba joined them after getting some rest following the World Junior Championship. He’s got six points, including two goals, and is plus-10. . . .
Don’t look now but things are heating up in the WHL’s scoring derby. Spokane Chiefs F Mitch Holmberg continues to lead, with 85 points in 48 games, but Portland F Nic Petan is on the move, with 79 points in 41 games. . . . Holmberg leads the WHL in goals, with 43, and that’s 10 more than Portland F Oliver Bjorkstrand, who is third in the points derby, with 70. . . . Petan leads the league in assists, with 55. . . . Leipsic and Petan shared the scoring title last season, each with 120 points. . . .
The Brandon Wheat Kings, who are 4-0-1 in their last five games, open a four-game road swing in Edmonton against the red-hot Oil Kings today. If you’re in the area, not that the game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Yes, they are calling it Hockey Hooky. . . .
Kootenay Ice F Luke Philp is on a 10-game point streak, with 16 points in that time, while F Tim Bozon is riding a nine-game tear. He has 15 points over that stretch. . . . Philp has the longest ongoing streak in the WHL at the moment. . . .
---
The Prince George Cougars were without three of their top eight scorers as they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Wheat Kings in Brandon on Saturday night. Ted Clarke of the Prince George Citizen reports that “centre Alex Forsberg (concussion) and winger Chase Witala (upper body) were out with injuries and centre Zach Pochiro was scratched as punishment for his undisciplined play after he took three straight minor penalties in the first period of the Regina game.” . . . The Cougars had lost 8-0 to the Pats in Regina on Friday. . . .
---
MONDAY’S GAME:
In Prince Albert, F Zach Pochiro, back in the lineup after sitting out a game as a healthy scratch, forced OT and then won the game in the shootout as the Prince George Cougars beat the Raiders, 6-5. . . . Pochiro tied the game right off a faceoff with 15.4 seconds left in the third period. He then was the only one of eight skaters to score in the shootout. . . . F Todd Fiddler scored twice for the Cougars, giving him 30 goals this season. . . . The Raiders led five times in this one -- 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4. . . . The Raiders (23-23-3), who had scored five regulation-time goals in their previous five games, are ninth in the Eastern Conference, five points out of a playoff spot. . . . The Cougars (19-26-7) are ninth in the Western Conference, eight points out of the playoffs.

Coaching news in the WHL

THE MacBETH REPORT:
D Giffen Nyren (Moose Jaw, Kamloops, Calgary, 2006-10) signed a try-out contract through Sept. 1 with Red Bull Salzburg (Austria, Erste Bank Liga). He had four goals and six assists in 29 games for the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) and one goal and three assists in 15 games with the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) last season. . . .
D Bryce Lampman (Kamloops, 2002-03) signed a one-year contract with the Hannover Scorpions (Germany, DEL). He had two goals and five assists in 24 games for Ingolstadt (Germany, DEL) after starting last season with the Houston Aeros (AHL), where he was pointless in five games. . . .
F Martin Ruzicka (Everett, Lethbridge, 2003-05) signed a one-year contract with Amur Khabarovsk (Russia, KHL). He had 24 goals and 26 assists in 51 games for Trinec (Czech Republic, Extraliga) last season.

Mike Stothers
It would seem that the last two WHL teams without head coaches have made their decisions.
A source told me early Monday evening — and subsequent reports are all over the Internet — that the Moose Jaw Warriors are expected to name Mike Stothers as their head coach, while the Regina Pats may have settled on Ryan McGill. Regina, by the way, did give strong consideration to hiring Stothers before choosing to go in another direction.
Stothers, a 49-year-old Torontonian, was the 21st selection in the 1980 NHL draft, going to the Philadelphia Flyers from the OHL’s Kingston Canadians. He played professionally through 1991-92 when he got into coaching as a player/assistant coach with the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Since then he has coached in the AHL, NHL, and OHL. He spent five seasons (2002-07) as head coach of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack.
Last season, Stothers was an assistant coach with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers.
In Moose Jaw, Stothers will take over from Dave Hunchak, who was fired after going 40-26-6 and finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference. Hunchak has since signed as an associate coach with the Kamloops Blazers.
Of course, it wasn't that long ago when sources had Dave Barr fingered as the Warriors' next head coach. The source I heard from early Monday evening, however, is rather highly placed within WHL circles.
Meanwhile, The Coaches Site tweeted about 9 p.m. PT that “former Calgary Flames assistant Ryan McGill expected to be named the Regina Pats new head coach as early as (today).”
Word out of Regina — see Greg Harder's blog Slap Shots over there on the right — is that the Pats are close to a hire but negotiations continue.
McGill, 42, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Before that, he spent four seasons as the head coach of the Flames’ AHL affiliates, first the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights and then the Quad City Flames.
Ryan McGill
A native of Sherwood Park, Alta., he is a former WHL defenceman (Lethbridge, Swift Current, Medicine Hat, 1985-89) who was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Ice (1996-98) and a head coach with Edmonton/Kootenay (1997-2001). He guided the Ice to the 2002 Memorial Cup title and then spent three seasons as head coach of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.
In Regina, McGill would replace Curtis Hunt, who was fired last month.
The Everett Silvertips (Mark Ferner) and Seattle Thunderbirds (Steve Konowalchuk) also have new head coaches. Craig Hartsburg left Everett and now is an associate coach with the Calgary Flames. Meanwhile, the Kent-based Thunderbirds cut ties with long-time head coach Rob Sumner after last season.
———
Dan Bonar, who has scouted for the Calgary Hitmen for eight seasons, is the team’s new head scout. Bonar, from Deloraine, Man., replaces Brad Whelen, who now is with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Bonar played for the Brandon Wheat Kings before going on to an NHL career that included stints with the Los Angeles Kings. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
D Bryce Lampman (Kamloops, 2002-03) has signed a contract for the rest of the season with Ingolstadt (Germany DEL). He was pointless in five games with the Houston Aeros (AHL) this season.
---
Steve Ewen, who writes for the Vancouver Province and covers the Vancouver Giants, continues to make progress as he crushes the tumour with humour. You may check out his latest blog entry right here.

---
The Calgary Hitmen will add D Brody Luhning, 18, to their roster as they return to action after the Christmas break. Kuhning, an eighth-round pick by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2007 bantam draft, has 23 points and 50 penalty minutes in 35 games with the SJHL’s Battlefords North Stars. Kuhning, from Lumsden, Sask., had one assist in 30 games with Swift Current last season. . . . The Hitmen are at home to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday.
---
Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun reports that the Vancouver Giants expect to have two injured players back for tonight’s game with the visiting Kamloops Blazers. D Zach Hodder (shoulders) is expected to play his first game of the season, while F Greg Lamoure (shoulder) hasn’t played since Dec. 4. . . . The Giants may still be without D David Musil, who has a deep bone bruise on his right shin and hasn’t played since Dec. 7. That injury kept him off the ice when he joined the Czech junior team before Christmas. . . . The Giants also will be without F Matt Bellerive, who is with Team Pacific at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. . . . The Blazers likely will have D Josh Caron (broken collarbone) back for the first time since the second game of the season. But they will be missing D Brady Gaudet and F Logan McVeigh, both of whom are with Team Western at the WHC. The Blazers are expected to have F Matt Needham of the Okanagan Hockey Academy and D Landon Cross from the midget AAA Brandon Wheat Kings in their lineup. Both were 2010 bantam draft picks. . . . The Giants and Blazers meet in Kamloops on Tuesday night.

Ranford, Bosch toast of CHL

By GREGG DRINNAN
Daily News Sports Editor
For what is believed to be the first time in franchise history, the Kamloops Blazers claimed both CHL player-of-the-week awards on Wednesday.
Left-winger Brendan Ranford was named the player of the week, while Jeff Bosch took goaltender-of-the-week honours.
Ranford had back-to-back three-point games as the Blazers won both their games last week. He had two goals and an assist in a 4-0 home-ice victory over the Kelowna Rockets and followed that up with a goal and two helpers in a 3-1 victory over the visitingEverett Silvertips.
Ranford, 18, is in his third WHL season. He leads the WHL in goals, with 20, and is tied for third in points, with 33.
Ranford was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round of the NHL’s 2010 draft.
Meanwhile, Bosch was 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA and a .984 save percentage as he went the distance in both games. He stopped 23 shots against Kelowna, record his second shutout of the season, then made 38 saves in beating Everett.
Bosch, 20, is in his fourth WHL season. He was acquired earlier this season from the Moose Jaw Warriors for a sixth-round pick in the 2011 bantam draft.
The last Kamloops player to be a CHL player or goaltender of the week was Justin Leclerc. He was named goaltender of the week on Nov. 20, 2007, after going 2-0-0, 0-.96, .961.
———
The Blazers will lose two players off their roster to Team West, which will play in the U-17 World Hockey Challenge, right after the Christmas break.
D Brady Gaudet, who is from Redvers, Sask., and F Logan McVeigh, from Kenaston, Sask., are to play for Team West in the tournament that opens Dec. 29 and ends Jan. 4. It will be played in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, Man.
The Blazers didn’t have anyone selected to Team Pacific, which represents Alberta and B.C.
———
There weren’t any Blazers on NHL Central Scoutings early-season rankings that were released earlier this week.
However, G John Keeney, who is on the Blazers’ list and plays for the USHL’s Omaha Lancers, showed up on one list. He is ranked eighth among USHL goaltenders.
———
JUST NOTES: The Blazers had hoped to have D Josh Caron back in their lineup this weekend, but now are thinking he won’t be ready until early in December. Caron suffered a broken collarbone on Sept. 25, in the second game of the regular season. . . . The Blazers will play the Silvertips in Everett on Friday and the Winterhawks in Portland on Saturday. They return home to face the Regina Pats on Tuesday. . . . The Vancouver Giants have added F Richard Vanderhoek, 19, to their roster. Vanderhoek, who had 43 points in 25 games with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles, was a sixth-round pick by the Blazers in the 2006 bantam draft. He has joined the Giants and is expected to play Friday against the visiting Regina Pats. He was pointless, with two penalty minutes, in four games with the Blazers in 2007-08. . . . The AHL’s Houston Aeros have signed former Blazers D Bryce Lampman, 28, to a tryout. A fourth-round pick of the New York Rangers in the NHL’s 2001 draft, Lampman played with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen last season, totaling 20 points in 57 games.
