Portland won the series, 4-2, to advance to the second round for a sixth straight year. The Winterhawks will open with games against the host Everett Silvertips on Friday and Saturday. The series will then head to Portland for games on Thursday, April 16 and Friday, April 17. Yes, the teams will get four days off as they change venues. . . . Portland F Miles Koules gave his guys a 4-3 lead on a wraparound at 11:25 of the third period. . . . Portland G Adin Hill stopped 46 shots, 10 more than Seattle’s Taran Kozun. . . . Seattle was 1-for-4 on the PP; Portland was 0-for-2. . . . Attendance was 5,088. . . . Of the WHL’s eight first-round series, this was the most fun to watch via social media. The fans even feuded over the three-star selections.

In Spokane, F Brayden Low scored at 3:43 of the third OT period to give the Everett Silvertips a 2-1 victory over the Chiefs. . . . Everett won the series, 4-2, ending a string of seven consecutive first-round losses. It will meet the Portland Winterhawks in the second round. That series will open in Everett with games on Friday and Saturday. . . . Spokane is 0-7 with seven goals scored in its last seven home playoff games. . . . Low took advantage of a Spokane turnover in its zone to get a backhand through G Garret Hughson and into the net. . . . The goal was Low’s fourth of the series. In fact, he scored in each of the last four games. . . . Everett had a potential goal disallowed after video review when it was ruled that F Remi Laurencelle had deflected the puck into the net with a high stick. That came 1:15 into the second OT period. . . . Later in that period, Everett D Ben Betker had a shot glance off the cross-bar. . . . The Chiefs were 5.4 seconds from having their season end when F Kailer Yamamoto redirected a shot by F Adam Helewka to tie the game 1-1. . . . The Silvertips lost D Noah Juulsen to an undisclosed injury early in the game and, according to Nick Patterson of the Everett Herald, D Tristen Pfeifer didn’t play after the third period. . . . Mike Boyle, the radio voice of the Chiefs, missed this one due to the birth of his second son. Jay Stewart, a former play-by-play voice who is the Chiefs’ vice-president of sponsorships, filled in. . . . “No regrets," Don Nachbaur, Spokane’s head coach, told Chris Derrick of the Spokane Spokseman-Review. “We tried our best. We did our best. We made a lot of mistakes in the overtime and the game's about mistakes. But our effort was there. We just played the team that won the conference and played possibly one of the top teams in the Western Hockey League. We went nose-to-nose with these guys. A break here, a break there, we win the game, and I can say that about other games in this series, too.” . . . Attendance was 3,714.

Jack Nicolle, who once owned a piece of the Regina Pats, died in a Regina hospital on April 1. He was 79. Nicolle, who had suffered a stroke five days earlier, owned a piece of the Pats, along with Huddy Bell, Morley Gusway, Bill Hicke and Ted Knight. . . . Nicolle was one of a kind. Oh, how I loved to listen to the man laugh. At one time, Nicolle owned part of Mutt and Jeff’s Bar & Grill, along with then-Saskatchewan Roughriders stars Jeff Fairholm and Dave Ridgway, and I sometimes would stop by just to chat and to laugh. . . . Regina is much richer for having had Nicolle, but is much poorer now that he is gone.
——

——
D Josh Morrissey of the Kelowna Rockets, who has been out with a leg injury since Feb. 28, is back practising and he isn’t wearing a non-contact jersey. The Rockets won’t say whether he’ll play Friday when they open at home against the Victoria Royals. Initially, it was thought he might be out until at least April 20. . . . Warren Henderson of Kelowna Capital News also reports that Rockets F Tyrell Goulbourne will play Friday after sitting out two games with an undisclosed injury, while F Justin Kirkland is still out.
——
F Reid Duke of the Brandon Wheat Kings, who hasn’t played since Feb. 13, is back practising, but it’s not known if he’ll play Friday in the series-opener against the visiting Regina Pats. . . . When Duke does return, the Wheat Kings’ lineup will be gaining a point-a-game forward, as he had 51 points in 52 games when he was injured.

Cougars leaving early on next trip . . . Raiders stun Wheaties . . . Milestone for Reinhart

———

Mark Lamb, the general manager and head coach of the Swift Current Broncos, does a lot more than just coach his WHL team. If you’re interested in more, I wrote a piece on Lamb for The Coaches Site. . . . That story is right here.
———
The Prince George Cougars are starting their next road trip four days early as they head to Kent, Wash., for a Friday night date with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Cougars actually will leave on Monday and make stops in Quesnel (Monday), Williams Lake (Tuesday) and Quesnel (Wednesday), where they will practise and then work with minor hockey teams. Each stop also will include community meet and greets, and autograph sessions. . . .  “In order to support the 2015 Canada Winter Games to the fullest extent possible, the Cougars moved out of their own dressing room to make room for the surplus of athletes,” explained Andy Beesley, the Cougars’ vice-president of business.“This allowed us to create a voluntary extra road trip so we can reach out to our partner communities that we consider to be a major part of the Prince George Cougars family.”
———
Ken Campbell of The Hockey News has waded into the minimum wage debate that involves major junior hockey. The piece is headlined: If junior operators can’t afford a reasonable wage, it’s time to shut down. . . . His take is right here.
———
The Seattle Thunderbirds have signed G Ryan Gilchrist, 16. The 6-foot-3 Gilchrist plays for the midget AAA Lloydminster, Alta., Bobcats, for whom he is 8-5-3, 2.81, .890. He has been in each of Seattle’s last two training camps. At the moment, he likely is third on Seattle's depth chart, behind Taran Kozun, 19, and Logan Flodell, who turned 18 on Feb. 10.

Concern over attendance figures? . . . Some wine in Spokane . . . Rankin red hot for Hitmen

“During the seven seasons of minor-pro hockey with the Victoria Salmon Kings in the ECHL, it was an article of faith among some local fans that Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre would be packed every night if only the major-junior WHL would return and Islanders could once again watch a brand of hockey with which they were more familiar,” writes Cleve Dheensaw in Friday’s Victoria Times Colonist.
“Well, on Tuesday, a combined five players on the Victoria Royals and Portland Winterhawks who are prospects for Canada, Sweden, Denmark and the U.S. at the 2015 world junior championship, were on the ice for an appealing WHL game at the Memorial Centre, but only an announced gathering of 3,779 was at the 7,006-seat arena. That has been a common weekday thread this season on Blanshard Street, with empty blue and burgundy seats far outnumbering the ones with butts filling them.”
Dheensaw’s complete story is right here.
---
Going into Friday’s games only two WHL teams were showing increased ticket sales when comparing average attendance at this point in the season to last season’s final numbers.
Granted, it’s a bit like comparing apples and oranges, but it must mean something when 19 teams are showing a decrease.
The Brandon Wheat Kings, who are off to a terrific start, are averaging 3,838 fans through 13 home games; they finished last season at 3,529.
The Prince George Cougars, in their first season under new ownership, are at 2,709 through 17 games, up from last season’s final number of 1,693.
The Medicine Hat Tigers, in their final season in the Arena, have sold out (4,006) each of their 16 games, as they have done for the past number of seasons. The Tigers are scheduled to move into the 6,500-seat Regional Event Centre in September.
Prior to last night’s games, the WHL had played 39.2 per cent of its season; it was averaging 4,104 fans through 311 games. Last season, it finished with an average of 4,488.
Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province wrote in late November that Giants owner Ron Toigo had admitted to losing $400,000 in each of the previous two seasons. That being the case, one can only imagine what that number might be when this season is one. In 2012-13, the Giants’ average attendance was 7,205, a number that slid to 6,266 last season and this season is at 4,879.
Keep in mind, too, that WHL attendance figures indicate the number of tickets sold, not the number of people in attendance. In many instances, there are more empty seats in buildings than the announced attendance figures would seem to indicate. That, of course, means fewer people are purchasing team merchandise or spending money at the concession stands.
All of this can’t be good news for WHL teams, what with expenses seemingly not falling while new revenue streams are becoming harder to find.
What has happened recently can perhaps be referred to as The Netflix Factor.
In the past, I have alluded to a conversation I had with then-WHL president Ed Chynoweth a long time ago, and I will mention it again. The chat followed the introduction of VCRs as consumer products. It was than that Chynoweth said WHL teams no longer could open the doors to their arenas and expect the fans to show up.
Of course, in those days, a consumer’s major decision was VHS or Beta. Who knew then what minor league teams who depend so much on ticket sales for survival would be faced with in terms of competition?
“In junior and minor pro, everyone is facing a marketplace that has a ton of entertainment choices,” Victoria general manager Cam Hope told Dheensaw. “Our job is convincing people not to sit in front of their TVs, where they have hundreds of choices a week.
“It’s a struggle for everyone involved in our level of the sports business, which is so ticket-revenue driven. We don’t have the TV and sponsorship packages that provide revenue streams for the major-league teams.”
The struggle to get people away from their TVs isn’t going to end any time soon.
