Hay healthy and enjoying hometown life with Blazers

Don Hay isn’t going anywhere.
Hay will turn 63 on Feb. 13. He has his health. He loves what he’s doing. He’s back in his hometown of Kamloops, surrounded by family and friends. There is more family, including grandchildren, in Salmon Arm, about an hour to the east, where son Darrell is cutting his teeth in the coaching game as an
DON HAY
assistant with the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
Add it all up and it means the head coach of the Kamloops Blazers is quite content with his life at this moment.
“I’d like to go as long as I can,” Hay said after his Blazers had beaten the visiting Kelowna Rockets 3-1 on Friday night. “I really enjoy coming to work every day . . . I enjoy it.”
Asked if the end of his career is in sight, Hay replied: “It’s something that we play by ear each year.”
If you missed it, it was thought that Hay posted his 700th victory as a WHL head coach on Friday. However, in the post-game conversation between Hay and reporters, it was discovered that there might be a few victories missing.
Hay was of the belief that his first victory came on Sept. 26, 1992, when the Blazers beat the host Tacoma Rockets, 8-7 in OT.
However, the WHL office had told Earl Seitz, the sports director at CFJC-TV in Kamloops, that victory No. 1 happened on Dec. 13, 1991, when the Blazers beat the visiting Spokane Chiefs, 7-4.
At the time, Hay was an assistant under head coach Tom Renney, who had left for a stint as an assistant coach with Canada’s national junior team. With Renney away, the Blazers went 6-4-0 under Hay.
“I didn’t know they added those ones on,” said Hay, who then pointed out that “I took over for Hitch when he went to the world juniors, too.”
Yes, indeed. Blazers head coach Ken Hitchcock was an assistant coach under Dave Chambers with Team Canada at the 1988 World Junior Championship. With Hitchcock gone, Hay was in charge of a WHL team for the first time.
The Blazers went 2-4-1 with Hitchcock gone and Hay in charge, meaning that his first victory as a WHL head coach actually occurred on Dec. 18, 1987, when the Blazers beat the Thunderbirds, 5-2, in Seattle.
With those two victories added to his total, it means that Hay’s 700th coaching victory actually came on Dec. 30 when the Blazers beat the Vancouver Giants, 4-2, in Langley, B.C.
So . . . when the Blazers beat the Rockets on Friday night, it left Hay with 702 victories, 40 behind Ken Hodge, the only other person with 700 WHL coaching triumphs. (This also means that Hitchcock’s record will lose two victories, leaving him with 289.)
“I can remember coaching against Portland when we were assistant coaches,” Hay said, “and Hodge was the head guy. He obviously did a great job in Portland for a lot of years.”
Hay has been coaching for a lot of years, too. He got started with the senior Kamloops Cowboys after a brief pro career that includes IHL stops with the Columbus Owls and Flint Generals.
Hay returned home to Kamloops and began what he thought would be a career as a firefighter. That all changed thanks to one angry coach.
“I got the opportunity to be player-coach when the head coach was mad at us and didn’t come to a game,” Hay said. “Everybody was kind of looking around and asking who wants to coach. I put up my hand and it’s something I’ve really enjoyed ever since.”
He has made NHL coaching stops with the Calgary Flames, Phoenix Coyotes and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He has coached with the AHL’s Utah Grizzlies. In the WHL, he also has worked with the Tri-City Americans and Vancouver Giants.
The circle was completed in the summer of 2014 when Hay left the Giants — he had been with them for 10 seasons and had one year left on his contract — to come home to the Blazers.
When it was suggested on Friday that he might end his career in his hometown, he replied: “I hope so . . . I’m happy here.”
But like the coach he is, he also admitted that, well, the NHL is always there.
“If there’s an offer . . . well . . . never say never,” he said. “But I’m really enjoying my time here.”
How much is he enjoying it?
“I’m excited every day to come to work. I show up here every day in the summertime,” he said. “It’s my routine.”

“The NFL is great at selling things,” writes Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star. “Some of them, you just can’t buy.” . . . He is referring to the NFL’s figures that claim concussions are down 25 per cent over last season and 36 per cent over two seasons ago. . . . Arthur’s complete column is right here and it’s a great read.

Another player at home with brain injury . . . To dry scrape, or not to dry scrape

G Leland Irving (Everett, 2003-08) has signed a one-year contract with Salavat Yulaev Ufa (Russia, KHL). He was invited to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s training camp on a tryout basis on Sept. 9. Last season, with Jokerit Helsinki (Finland, Liiga), he was 2.14 and .922 in 55 games. . . .
F Karel Hromas (Everett, 2004-06) has been released by Kadaň (Czech Republic, 1. Liga). Last season, he had one assist in seven games with Chomutov (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He had 11 points, including six goals, in 29 games on loan to Kadaň.

CONCUSSION REPORT:

Veteran F Chase Souto, 20, no longer is with the Kamloops Blazers. Souto, who is hoping to play in his fifth season with the Blazers, has returned to his California home as he tries to recover from at least the fourth concussion of his WHL career.
Souto suffered his latest concussion on Feb. 7 and still wasn’t feeling well when he reported to the Blazers training camp in late August.
“He took part in the first two days of training camp,” Blazers head coach Don Hay told Earl Seitz of CFJC-TV in Kamloops. “He came to us and said he wasn’t feeling quite right. Our doctors looked at him and shut him down.
“We’ve given him some time to go home, get well rested, then have the possibility of coming back and joining us at a future date.”
Souto finished last season with 31 points, including 20 goals, in 47 games. He suffered a broken hand during a fight in Moose Jaw on Dec. 15 and didn’t play again until Jan. 17.
His latest concussion came in a game against the visiting Victoria Royals on Feb. 7. He tried to play again, on Feb. 28 in Calgary, but it didn’t work and his season was over.
Now there isn’t any time frame for a return.
“The doctor feels he’s not at 100 per cent right now,” Hay said,
“and wants to give him a little more time to recover.”
Souto incurred two concussions as a 16-year-old freshman, the first coming four games into the season on an open-ice hit in Chilliwack, the second occurring when he was on the receiving end of a heavy check in Cranbrook.
Then, on Sept. 10, 2011, he took an elbow to the head during an exhibition game against Kelowna and that resulted in brain injury No. 3.
Three years ago, after Souto suffered that third brain injury, I talked with him and wrote this piece right here. The interesting part is how he kept playing after the hit and intentionally got into a fight. That way, he got tossed with the automatic game misconduct and was able to buy some time as he tried to determine whether he might be able to keep the brain injury from training Colin Robinson and the coaching staff.
With Souto gone, the Blazers are down to two 20-year-olds -- G Bolton Pouliot and D Brady Gaudet.
Will Souto be back in time to fill that third spot.
“That is open right now,” Hay told Seitz, “but there’s always the possibility it might get filled.”
The Blazers also need Souto’s offence. With him on the roster, they return 106 goals from a team that had the second-poorest offence in the WHL last season.

Sometime during the next week, the WHL will issue a news release covering rule changes for the 2014-15 regular season. Don't expect the trapezoid behind the nets to be expanded or for the area between the hash marks at faceoff circles to be widened, a la the NHL. No doubt the WHL would like to use both rules, but there isn't time to change the paint schemes in all of the arenas before the season opens on Friday. . . . I experienced the dry scrape before overtime for the first time on Friday night. I would hope the WHL dumps that idea before the regular season begins. There are times when there is a real buzz in a building as everyone prepares for OT. But the time it takes to do a dry scrape sucks the atmosphere right out of the building. At least, that was the case last night in Kamloops, where the Blazers scored at 18:53 of the third period to forge a 3-3 tie and force OT with the Prince George Cougars.
---
Some impressions from that game:
Kamloops F Matt Needham needs to have a lot of games just like that one for the Blazers to have success this season. The Blazers’ captain had the winning goal, on the PP, and two assists. He set up the tying goal by winning a faceoff in the Cougars’ zone. . . . Kamloops D Patrik Maier, a Slovakian freshman, had a goal and an assist and showed some flair. He slammed his gun into its holster after rifling a shot through a screen for a third-period goal. He also showed a sharp stick and some feistiness in front of his net. . . . Blazers F Jake Kryski, 16, was the best player on the ice. The kid has a lot of game for someone that young. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles the grind of a WHL schedule. . . . The Cougars had a few veterans who played like it was the last exhibition game, which it was. At this level, coaches shouldn’t have to be yelling at players to skate hard on the way back into their zone. . . . Prince George D Dominic Thom looks like one of those players you hate to play against but love to have on your team. . . . Cougars F Jari Erricson, 20, has some rust after playing only four games last season thanks to a brain injury. . . . The Cougars scratched F Jansen Harkins, meaning he finishes the exhibition season with nine points, including four goals, in three games.
---
The Medicine Hat Tigers are waiting to find out exactly what is wrong with G Jared Rathjen. Shaun Clouston, the Tigers’ GM and head coach, has told Ryan McCracken of the Medicine Hat News that Rathjen, 20, has yet to get medical clearance to play. . . . “In his medical, (Rathjen) had some abnormalities appear on some testing, and so basically until those are investigated and looked into, our doctor has said he can’t participate,” Clouston told McCracken. “So he’s been just kind of waiting. He’s going to see a specialist next week and hopefully he’ll be back to normal.” . . . For now, then, Nick Schneider will be the Tigers’ starting goaltender, with Cole Schafer from the junior B Medicine Hat Cubs backing up. That means Schneider starts tonight against the Red Deer Rebels in Stettler, with Schafter on the bench. . . . McCracken also reports that F Anthony Ast (wrist) and F Chad Labelle (knee) are hobbled.
---
NHLIt’s hard to believe, but F Tim Bozon is in camp with the Montreal Canadiens. It was only in March when Bozon, then with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice, was in the intensive care unit of a Saskatoon hospital, deathly ill with Neisseria meningitis. He has come a long way since then, though, and Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette has the story right here.
---

The OHL has handed out its first major suspension of the season, hitting F Noah Bushnell of the Sarnia Sting with a 10-game sentence for a headshot -- an elbow to the an opponent’s chin -- during a preseason game. . . . There’s more, including video, right here.
---

It sounds like Tim Hunter, the first-year head coach of the Moose Jaw Warriors, got welcomed to the WHL on Friday night. His club was outshot 42-20 en route to a 6-2 loss to the host Brandon Wheat Kings. Afterwards, Hunter told Katie Brickman of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald: “I never trust the shot clock on the road. I don’t think it was quite as bad as it was but, still, they did outshoot us and outwork us.” . . . Ah, yes, the shot clock on the road in the WHL. There isn‘t a coach in the league who hasn‘t walked the same ground as Hunter. . . .
An interesting note from Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, after the Blades’ 3-2 shootout victory over the visiting Swift Current Broncos last night: “The 1,134 fans who attended Friday’s game got a taste of what the setup will look like at the rink this season. The upper bowl will be curtained off for almost all games in an effort to create a better atmosphere and stronger demand for tickets. The lower bowl holds approximately 6,000 people.” . . . During that game, Nugent-Bowman tweeted: “Broncos D Jordan Harris dumped to the side of the SC net. He skates off the ice with his left shoulder dangling down.” . . .
F Justin Hickman of the Seattle Thunderbirds was to have joined the Winnipeg Jets team at the Young Guns tournament in Penticton, B.C., but those plans were ruined by an undisclosed injury suffered in practice this week. . . . The Toronto Maple Leafs revealed Friday that D Rinat Valiev of the Kootenay Ice won’t participate in their camp because of an undisclosed injury. . . .
F Kristian Ferletak of the Victoria Royals drew a one-game suspension for the goaltender interference major and game misconduct he incurred Thursday against the visiting Vancouver Giants. He won't play tonight in Kelowna against the Rockets. . . . Victoria D Joe Hicketts wasn’t selected in the NHL’s 2014 draft, but is with the Detroit Red Wings’ rookie team in a tournament at Traverse City, Mich. Last night, he scored in OT and also drew an assist as the Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues, 6-5.

With Internet problems in the press box at Interior Savings Centre, veteran
sportscaster Earl Seitz of Kamloops TV station CFJC had time to pose for
a photo with the gals from the station on Friday night. There's more from
Seitz further down in this report.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
D Johnny Boychuk (Calgary, Moose Jaw, 1999-2004) signed a lockout contract with Red Bull Salzburg (Austria, Erste Bank Liga). He had five goals and ten assists in 77 games with Boston Bruins last season. . . .
F Kris Beech (Calgary, 1996-2001) was released by Pardubice (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He had two goals and six assists in 21 games with Pardubice this season. . . .
F Evander Kane (Vancouver, 2006-09) was released from his lockout contract by Dinamo Minsk (Belarus, KHL). He had one goal and 47 PIM in 11 games with Minsk.
———
Brent Sutter, the owner, president, general manager and, since Tuesday, interim head coach of the Red Deer Rebels continued to reshape his roster Friday. He released D Jan Bittner, a 19-year-old Czech who didn’t have a point in 14 games. . . . Sutter also released F Austin Ferguson, who was pointless in four games with the Rebels after having been acquired from the Kelowna Rockets. Ferguson, 17, is from Abbotsford, B.C.
———
The Kamloops Blazers have acquired F Joey Kornelsen, 19, from the Calgary Hitmen for a fifth-round pick in the 2013 bantam draft. . . . Kornelsen, in his fourth WHL season, also played for the Moose Jaw Warriors. In 187 regular-season games, he has 62 points, including 24 goals. This season, he has four assists in 18 games. . . . With the Hitmen getting F Victor Rask back from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, Kornelsen may have had trouble getting playing time in Calgary. . . . The Blazers, meanwhile, are without two 20-year-old forwards. Dylan Willick (broken ankle) likely won’t play until after Christmas, while Jordan DePape (shoulder) continues to be evaluated by medical staff. . . . Kamloops associate coach Dave Hunchak coached Kornelsen while both were with the Warriors. Moose Jaw selected him with its first pick, 33rd overall, in the 2008 bantam draft. . . . Alan Caldwell, over there at Small Thoughts At Large, notes that the Hitmen now hold 10 selections in the first six rounds of the 2013 bantam draft. As Caldwell tweeted: “Lots of trade bait there, if they want to make a move later.”
———
Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun reports that D Martin Gernat is back in Edmonton, although he’s still a while from getting back into the Oil Kings’ lineup. Gernat, who watched his teammates practise on Friday, had shoulder surgery in the Czech Republic in September. If all goes well, Gernat could begin light skating in a couple of weeks. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Gernat had 55 points, including nine goals, as a freshman last season. The Edmonton Oilers selected him in the fifth round of the NHL’s 2011 draft.
The Oil Kings return to action tonight as they play host to the Prince Albert Raiders. The Oil Kings will be without F Travis Ewanyk, who suffered a knee injury during Team WHL’s 1-0 Super Series shootout victory over a Russian side in Vancouver on Wednesday. He was to undergo an MRI on Friday and there already is speculation that he will be out for at least a month.
———
FRIDAY’S GAMES:
In Victoria, G Patrik Polivka stopped 20 shots as the Royals beat the Everett Silvertips, 5-0. . . . It was Polivka’s first WHL shutout. . . . He had help as the Silvertips hit three posts. . . . It also was the Royals’ first shutout since the franchise relocated from Chilliwack prior to last season. . . . The big story, however, may have come in the second period when Everett D Ryan Murray left the game after taking a check from Victoria F Logan Nelson. There were reports that Murray was taken to hospital with what is believed to be an injury to his left arm or shoulder. . . . Murray, taken second overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2012 NHL draft, is one of the league’s top defencemen. If healthy, he will play for Canada’s national junior team and may be the captain. . . . F Jamie Crooks had two goals, giving him nine, and an assist for the Royals, who have won two in a row. . . . Everett F Manraj Hayer was back after missing six games with an undisclosed injury. . . .

In Kamloops, the Blazers got 14 points from their big line as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Portland Winterhawks. . . . RW JC Lipon had two goals and two assists, while C Colin Smith had a goal and four assists and LW Tim Bozon was two and two. . . . Lipon leads the WHL in goals (19) and points (48), while Smith leads in assists (31) and is second in points (47). . . . The three had combined for just seven points in the previous six games, five of which were losses. . . . Portland had its 12-game winning streak snapped and fell four points back of the WHL-leading Blazers. . . . F Brendan Leipsic had a goal and two assists for the Winterhawks, his seventh straight multi-point game. He is on a nine-game point streak. . . . Kamloops F Brendan Ranford and Portland D Troy Rutkowski both played in their 300th regular-season games and each scored a goal. Each player is with his original team. . . . Kamloops D Sam Grist was pointless but finished plus-5. . . . Portland G Mac Carruth suffered his first loss in 10 decisions. He has given up 10 goals in his last four periods at Interior Savings Centre. That goes back to Game 6 of a second-round series last spring when the Blazers came back from a 5-2 deficit to win, 7-6. . . .

In Kent, Wash., F Alex Delnov had two goals and an assist to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers. . . . Delnov, who has eight goals, played for Russia in the Super Series-clinching victory over Team WHL on Thursday in Victoria. . . . Seattle F Robert Lipsbergs broke a 3-3 tie 15:57 of the third period. . . . F Hunter Shinkaruk scored twice for the Tigers, giving him 17. . . .

In Cranbrook, the Kootenay Ice scored three times in the game’s first 7:30 and went on to a 5-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings. . . . Brandon G Corbin Boes gave up four goals on 15 shots but last just one period. Curtis Honey came on to stop 17 of 18. . . . Kootenay G Mackenzie Skapski stopped 32 shots. . . . The teams meet in Cranbrook again tonight. . . .

In Lethbridge, F Logan McVeigh broke a 2-2 tie at 2:03 of the third period as the Prince Albert Raiders beat the Hurricanes, 3-2. . . . The victory lifted the Raiders past the idle Calgary Hitmen and Edmonton Oil Kings, into first place in the Eastern Conference. . . . F Leon Draisaitl had two goals for the winners. . . . F Russell Maxwell got his 14th goal of the season, in his 24th game, for Lethbrige. Lst season, he finished with 15 goals in 72 games. . . . Draisaitl, a German freshman who turned 17 on Oct. 27, has 18 points, five of them goals, in 22 games. . . . The Raiders are 6-0-0 against Alberta teams this season. They play in Edmonton tonight. . . .

In Prince George, G Andrey Makarov stopped 42 shots to lead the Saskatoon Blades to a 4-0 victory over the Cougars. . . . One night earlier, Makarov backstopped a Russian team to a 5-2 victory over Team WHL in a Super Series game in Victoria. He also played in Wednesday’s 1-0 shootout loss to the WHL in Vancouver. . . . This was Makarov’s first shutout this season and the third of his career. . . . Saskatoon F Josh Nicholls got his 19th goal, one of the league lead held by Kamloops F JC Lipon. . . . Prince George F Caleb Belter drew a boarding major and game misconduct at 12:10 of the first period. . . . Saskatoon D Matthew Pufahl, who was hit by Belter, needed help getting off the ice and didn’t return to the game. . . . The Cougars lost D Rinalds Rosinskis, who left in the second period after blocking a shot with his left leg. . . . The Blades continue their B.C. swing in Vancouver on Sunday. Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix reports that the Blades are expected to bring up F Nick Gomerich, 16, from the major midget North Island Silvertips for the game. . . .

In Vancouver, F Thomas Foster scored in the circus to give the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Regina Pats. . . . Foster was the 13th shooter in a seven-round shootout. . . . . Regina F Morgan Klimchuk forced OT with his 12th goal at 19:06 of the third period. It came via the PP. . . . Pats F Lane Scheidl, who began his WHL career with the Giants, notched his 11th goal and added two assists. . . . F Kale Kessy scored twice for Vancouver, including a shorthanded score at 7:16 of the third period that gave his side  3-2 lead. . . . Regine D Kyle Burroughs, who is from Langley, B.C., scored his first goal of the season in front of family and friends. . . . The Giants have back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Ironically, both victories have come in shootouts, a part of the game that Vancouver head coach Don Hay doesn’t enjoy. . . . Vancouver remains without F Cain Franson, who is believed to have a concussion. He has missed eight games. . . .

In Kennewick, Wash., the Tri-City Americans scored the game’s last three goals and beat the Kelowna Rockets, 3-2. . . . Tri-City F Justin Feser won it with his 15th score this season at 14:44 of the third period. . . . Americans G Eric Comrie stopped a season-high 41 shots. . . . Kelowna G Jordon Cooke returned from an undisclosed injury — speculation had him with a concussion incurred in a practice — to stop 19 shots. . . . The same teams meet in Kennewick again tonight.

THE MacBETH REPORT:
F Alex Leavitt (Swift Current, Everett, 2003-05) was released by Medvescak Zagreb (Croatia, Austria Erste Bank Liga). He had one goal and four assists in 13 games with Zagreb this season.

I was remiss here yesterday in not congratulating old friend Roy MacGregor of The Globe and Mail for his having been honoured with the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism. MacGregor was part of the Hockey Hall of Fame festivities on Monday.
The Last Season, a work of hockey fiction starring Felix Batterinski that was published in 1995, is being re-released. If you haven’t read it, you should.
As well, John Allemang of The Globe and Mail has a terrific profile of MacGregor right here.
And if you’re looking for a good piece of MacGregor writing, check out this one right here. It appeared late last month after he spent some time with fans of the AHL’s Hershey Bears. It’s a classic.

Shawn Mullin, the radio voice of the Swift Current Broncos, has interviewed me about Sudden Death: The Incredible Sage of the 1986 Swift Current Broncos. . . . He also has read the book. . . . His opinion of it is right here, as is the interview.
———
No less an authority than Earl Seitz, the veteran sportscaster at CFJC-TV, has given his stamp of approval to Sudden Death: The Incredible Saga of the 1986 Swift Current Broncos. . . . CFJC reporter Chad Klassen filed this report right here. . . . Yes, that is Tri-City Americans scout Terry Bangen in the background in one shot. Yes, he purchased a book. He also told me that on the evening of Dec. 30, 1986, he and play-by-play man Kelly Moore were five minutes from airtime with a Kamloops Blazers game when they were told of the bus crash. It really was one of those "where were you?" moments.

The Saskatoon Blades are heading out on a five-game swing into the B.C. Division without three injured players. F Jessey Astles underwent surgery on a wrist after suffering a skate cut, while F Brett Stovin and D Dalton Thrower have undisclosed ailments. . . . The Blades have added D Nelson Nogier, 16, to their roster for the junket. . . . The Blades being their tour of B.C. in Prince George on Friday. . . . A tip of the cap to the ol' redhead, Les Lazaruk, for the injury info.
———
The Swift Current Broncos’ next three games will be in the Central Division, starting Saturday night in Red Deer. The Broncos likely will be without F Brent Benson, 19, who has missed two games with an undisclosed injury and is listed as week-to-week.
———
The Regina Pats are going to have to make a 20-year-old decision. They now have four of them, after adding D Alex Theriau, who was dropped last week by the Medicine Hat Tigers and had joined the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals. (Rick Valette of Octagon Sports tweeted that information last night.)
Theriau is expected to play Friday when the Pats open their B.C. Division swing in Vancouver against the Giants.
He joins G Matt Hewitt, D Colton Jobke and F Lane Scheidl as the Pats’ 20-year-olds. However, Jobke is listed as being out indefinitely with an undisclosed upper-body injury.
———
Former Spokane Chiefs D Jared Cowen will undergo hip surgery on Saturday. Cowen, the ninth overall selection by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL’s 2009 draft, had been playing with the AHL’s Binghamton Senators. According to Rick Valette, Cowen’s agent: “Jared has a small tear in his labrum (hip). He will have surgery Saturday morning in New York. I expect he will be out for the season."
———
The Everett Silvertips have added F Brayden Low, 18, to their roster. Low had been with the BCHL’s Powell River Kings. So far this season, he had played in the BCHL with Powell River and the Merritt Centennials, putting up 10 points in 17 games. He was a seventh-round pick by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2009 bantam draft. He played five games with Portland over the last two seasons and was in camp with the Seattle Thunderbirds prior to this season.

F Victor Rask has been assigned to the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. He had five points, including a goal, in 10 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. He was a second-round selection in the 2011 NHL draft. . . . “We’re just trying to do what we think is best for Victor,” Charlotte head coach Jeff Daniels said in a news release. “We want him to be able to get as much ice time as possible in all situations that he might not have gotten here. He needs to be playing at the end of games, taking key faceoffs and being in more of a leadership role.” . . . As a freshman in Calgary last season, Rask had 63 points, 33 of them goals. . . . “He really opened our eyes,” said Daniels of Rask, who ranked tied for second among AHL rookies with a plus-seven rating at the time of his assignment. “We’re really happy and Carolina is really happy with the way he played. His hockey sense is really good, and he was making plays.” . . . Rask is expected to play for Sweden at the world junior tournament next month. He helped his country win the gold medal a year ago. . . . Rask is expected to be in Calgary’s lineup on Sunday when they play host to the Swift Current Broncos.
