Bean back with Hitmen . . . Three WHLers still in NHL camps . . . Flodell, Blades dump Raiders

———

The Calgary Hitmen are expected to have D Jake Bean in their lineup tonight (Friday) as they play host to the Kamloops Blazers. Bean, one of the WHL’s top defencemen, was returned Thursday by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. Bean, 18, is a Calgary native going into his third season with the Hitmen. Carolina selected him with the 13th overall pick of the NHL’s 2016 draft. . . . Last season, Bean had 64 points, 24 of them goals, in 68 games. He had 12 goals and 21 assists while on the PP last season, so his presence almost certainly will help a Calgary power-play unit that is 1-18 through three games. . . . The Hitmen (2-1-0) also have scored only five goals in their first three games. . . . The Blazers (2-4-0) are coming off a 5-4 loss to the host Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday. Kamloops led that one 3-0 in the first period.
——
The return of D Jake Bean to the Calgary Hitmen leaves three 19-year-old WHLers still with NHL teams.
D Ivan Provorov of the Brandon Wheat Kings is with the Philadelphia Flyers, D Brendan Guhle of the Prince Albert Raiders remains with the Buffalo Sabres, and F Mathew Barzal of the Seattle Thunderbirds is with the New York Islanders.
Provorov, the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft, has signed with the Flyers and is likely to open the regular season with them. He has been playing more than 20 minutes per gam in the exhibition season; last night, he played 21:51 and was plus-2 in a 4-2 victory over the host New York Rangers. Provorov, the CHL’s top defenceman last season, has played the last two seasons with the Wheat Kings.
The Sabres selected Guhle in the second round of the 2015 draft. He had a strong training camp a year ago and, as of Thursday night, was one of 10 defencemen remaining on Buffalo’s roster.
Barzal was the 16th overall selection in the 2015 draft. He, too, is likely to open the regular season in the NHL as the Islanders take a long look at him.
Provorov and Guhle have signed NHL deals.
——
The Kelowna Rockets have acquired the major junior rights to F Leif Mattson, 17, from the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Rockets gave up a conditional ninth-round selection in the 2017 bantam draft. Should Mattson play for the Rockets this season, it will become an eighth-round pick. . . . Last season, he had 25 points, including 12 goals, in 30 games with the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders. This season, he has two goals and an assist in five games with the AJHL’s Drumheller Dragons. . . . As a 15-year-old, he was teammates with Kamloops Blazers F Jermaine Loewen on the bantam AAA Interlake Lightning in Manitoba. . . . A native of Thompson, Man., the Wheat Kings selected him in the eighth round of the 2014 bantam draft.
——
Colton Stephenson was 19 when he announced his retirement from hockey just as the 2011-12 WHL season was getting started.
Stephenson, from Saskatoon, had been selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the third round of the 2007 bantam draft. He played one game with the Oil Kings in 2007-08. Over the next three seasons, he played in 18, 1 and 50 games. He didn’t play any regular-season games in 2011-12.
His last appearance in the WHL, in an exhibition game, came on Sept. 16, 2011.
“We were playing Red Deer in Lacombe and I went to finish my check and he went to counter hit me and caught me right on the chin, knocking me unconscious for a second,” Stephenson told me on Oct. 17, 2011. “I skated off and could not remember the shift.”
Stephenson also told me: “My health is most important to me and I felt it was time to retire. I have had five concussions since I was 16, and I took a year and a half off from them.
“Walking away from the game I love has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It's gonna be extremely hard for a long time but I know in the long run my decision is for the best.”
More than a month ago, the U of Saskatchewan Huskies announced that Stephenson was part of their recruiting class for 2016-17.
The Huskies will open the season tonight (Friday) and Saturday against the visiting UBC Thunderbirds.
Stephenson, however, isn’t on the Huskies’ roster.
——
Jordan Hart was sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service in the Federal District Court for the Southern District in New York on Thursday. Hart, 33, had pleaded guilty to possession of oxycodone, which is a misdemeanor. He had been charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone, which is a felony. The son of former NHLer Gerry Hart, who played junior with the Flin Flon Bombers, Jordan sold illegally obtained prescription painkillers to the late Derek Boogaard. . . . John Branch of The New York Times has more on the Hart case right here.

JUST NOTES:

The Prince George Cougars have dropped D Peter Kope, 17, from their roster. The Edmonton native is expected to play for the AJHL’s Calgary Canucks. The Cougars selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 bantam draft. Kope didn’t get into any of the Cougars’ first six games. . . . The Cougars’ roster now is at 26, including two goaltenders and eight defencemen. . . .
There is an interesting piece right here on F Gage Quinney, who is in camp with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins after a good stint with the parent Pittsburgh Penguins. Quinney, who finished up his WHL career with the Kamloops Blazers last season, doesn’t have a contract but it sounds as though he may be close. He was pointless last night as the AHL Penguins dropped a 4-1 decision to the visiting Albany Devils. . . .
The BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks have acquired the junior A rights to F Haydn Hopkins, 19, from the Victoria Grizzlies for future considerations. Hopkins, from Victoria, was a 12th-round pick by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2012 WHL bantam draft. He has 10 points, three of them goals, in 53 regular-season WHL games split between the Blades, Prince George Cougars and Vancouver Giants. He finished last season with the OHL’s Erie Otters and played two games there this season before leaving the team, saying he wanted to play in Western Canada.

Coaching
The junior B Sicamous Eagles of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League opened the season with eight straight losses and head coach Ty Davidson paid the price. The Eagles fired him earlier this week, replacing him with Matt Stang of Salmon Arm.

THURSDAY’S GAME:

At Saskatoon, G Logan Flodell stopped 31 shots to lead the Blades to a 2-0 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . Flodell, who was acquired last month from the Seattle Thunderbirds, earned his first shutout with Saskatoon and the fourth of his career. The Regina native had three with Seattle last season. . . . F Jesse Shynkaruk opened the scoring, with his third goal, at 15:04 of the second period. . . . F Josh Patterson added insurance at 9:09 of the third period. . . . Saskatoon (3-2-0) was 2-4 on the PP; Prince Albert was 0-3. . . . G Ian Scott stopped 24 shots for the Raiders (2-4-0). . . . Les Lazaruk, the longtime radio voice of the Blades, notes that the Blades have won eight straight home games against the Raiders. Prince Albert last won in Saskatoon on Sept. 20, 2014. The score that night was 3-1. . . . F Kolten Olynek, acquired by the Blades on waivers from the Raiders on Wednesday, was in Saskatoon’s lineup but went pointless. . . . Announced attendance: 2,732. . . . Some nasty road conditions will have played into what was the smallest crowd at a game in Saskatoon since Jan. 29, 2008, when 2,437 watched the Blades lose 7-3 to the Swift Current Broncos.

Blazers release one vet, trade another . . . Winterhawks have decision to make . . . Wheaties drop Thompson brothers

F Tyler Redenbach (Prince George, Swift Current, Lethbridge, 2001-05) has signed a one-year contract with Pardubice (Czech Republic, Extraliga). Last season, he had nine goals and 16 assists in 41 games with Pardubice. However, he was without a contract and was training in Finland. He arrived back in Pardubice on Saturday evening.
-———
The Kamloops Blazers have moved out two players off last season’s roster. . . . F Matt Campese, who turns 19 on Dec. 10, was released, while D Cam Reagan, 19, was traded to the Prince Albert Raiders
for a conditional seventh-round selection in the 2019 bantam draft. . . . Campese was a third-round pick by the Victoria Royals in the 2012 bantam draft. He had one assist in two games with the Blazers this season, after recording eight goals and four assists in 56 games last season. In 95 career regular-season games, 16 of them with Victoria, he has 10 goals and six assists. He is the son of former WHL GM, coach and goaltender Bruno Campese, who now scouts for the NHL’s Las Vegas franchise. . . . Reagan, from Sherwood Park, Alta., was a fourth-round pick by Kamloops in the 2012 bantam draft. He had five assists in 61 games last season, but didn’t get into either of the Blazers’ first two games this season. . . . The Blazers, who next play Friday against the host Royals, now have 26 players on their roster, including three goaltenders and nine defencemen. . . . That includes three players at NHL camps — G Connor Ingram (Tampa Bay Lightning), F Garrett Pilon (Washington Capitals) and F Deven Sideroff (Anaheim Ducks).
——
Among the latest players to return to the WHL from NHL teams:
Brandon Wheat Kings — F Tanner Kaspick, St. Louis Blues; D Kale Clague, Los Angeles Kings.
Kelowna Rockets — D Devante Stephens, Buffalo Sabres; D Braydyn Chizen, Minnesota Wild.
Medicine Hat Tigers — F John Dahlstrom, Chicago Blackhawks.
Moose Jaw Warriors — G Zach Sawchenko, Nashville Predators.
Portland Winterhawks — F Keegan Iverson, Minnesota Wild; F Rodrigo Abols, Vancouver Canucks.
Prince Albert Raiders — D Vojtech Budik, Buffalo Sabres.
Prince George Cougars — D Josh Anderson and F Brogan O’Brien, Colorado Avalanche; D Tate Olson, Vancouver Canucks.
Red Deer Rebels — F Brandon Hagel, Buffalo Sabres.
Vancouver Giants — F Radovan Bondra, Chicago Blackhawks; D Darian Skeoch, Anaheim Ducks.
——
With the Portland Winterhawks getting back F Keegan Iverson (Minnesota Wild) and Latvian F Rodrigo Abols (Vancouver Canucks) back on Monday, they now have two 20-year-olds on their roster. . . . The Winterhawks’ roster also features two freshmen imports — F Joachim Blichfeld of Frederikshavn, Denmark, and D Henri Jokiharju of Oulu, Finland. Now that Abols is back, the Winterhawks will have to trade him or release one of the other two. . . . Teams aren’t allowed to trade first-year imports; they can only be released, in which case they are placed on waivers and can be claimed by another team. . . . You can bet that Portland GM/head coach Mike Johnston was paying attention Sunday when the Everett Silvertips gave up a third-round bantam draft pick to get Austrian F Dominic Zwerger, who also is 20, from the Spokane Chiefs.
——
The Brandon Wheat Kings have dropped brothers Baron and Tyler Thompson from their roster. Neither was in the Brandon lineup for its season-opening weekend games. . . . The Thompsons are from Lakeville, Minn. . . . Tyler, 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, had two goals and an assist in eight games with the Victoria Royals last season. He was a third-round pick by the Royals in the 2014 bantam draft. . . . The Wheat Kings acquired both Thompsons in an Aug. 31 deal with Victoria that featured five players, four bantam draft picks and a conditional pick. . . . The Wheat Kings have 21 players in town, with two others — F Reid Duke (New York Rangers) and D Ivan Provorov (Philadelphia Flyers) — at NHL camps. . . . D Kale Clague was returned by the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.
——
The Prince George Cougars visit the Vancouver Giants in Langley, B.C., in Tuesday’s only WHL game. . . . Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province has a look right here at what’s in store for the two teams, who’s hurt, who’s back from the NHL and who isn’t.
——
Darren Steinke, a former Medicine Hat News sports reporter who now freelances out of Saskatoon, was in attendance on Sunday as the Blades celebrated the lives of Gordie Howe and his wife, Colleen. . . . How did the Blades do? . . . “The Blades hit all the positive checkmark points,” he writes on his blog, “which included ones you didn’t even think of.” . . . His complete report is right here. . . . And a big tip of the cap to Blades president Steve Hogle for the work he put into this really special event.

JUST NOTES:

We got the first ch-ch-ching of the season on Monday when the WHL fined the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Medicine Hat Tigers $500 apiece for the multi-fight situation (aka garage sale) they staged on Saturday night in The Hat. . . .
The Lethbridge Hurricanes have returned F Connor Lyons, 17, to the midget AAA Hurricanes. Lyons, a list player, has signed a WHL contract. The son of former Hurricanes sniper Corey Lyons, Connor was pointless in three exhibition games and Friday’s regular-season opener. Last season, he had 23 points, seven of them goals, in 34 games with the midget AAA club. . . . The WHL Hurricanes are down to 25 players, including two goaltenders and eight defencemen. . . .
The Tri-City Americans have signed D Tyler Jette, 18, to a WHL contract. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Jette is from Farmington, Minn. Jette, who is expected to join the Americans today (Tuesday), is coming off three seasons with the Farmington High team of the USHSL. Last season, he had 22 points, including five goals, in 22 games. . . . Jette actually started last season with the USHL’s Bloomington Thunder. He was pointless in two games before returning to his high school team. . . . He was nominated for the 2015-16 Reed Larson Award as the top senior defenceman in Minnesota. Jette also was one of 10 finalists for the Mr. Hockey Award that goes to the state’s top high school player. . . .
The OHL’s Erie Otters have released F Haydn Hopkins “in support of his pursuit to play out his 19-year-old season closer to home in Western Canada,” according a news release from the team. . . . Hopkins, from Victoria, was a 12th-round pick by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2012 bantam draft. He has three goals and seven assists in 53 regular-season WHL games, split among the Blades (4), Prince George Cougars (33) and Vancouver Giants (16). . . . Last season, he had a goal and three assists in 31 games with the Otters. He was pointless in the first two games of this season.

Draft day trades, bloodlines and notes

THE MacBETH REPORT:
KHLF Martin Růžička (Everett, Lethbridge, 2003-05) has signed a two-year contract with Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia, KHL). This season, with Třinec (Czech Republic, Extraliga), he led his team in scoring and finished third in the league’s scoring race with 55 points, including 26 goals, in 52 games. . . .

Czech-ELH
F Dominik Volek (Regina, Red Deer, Vancouver, 2011-14) signed a one-year contract with Sparta Prague (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He split this season between Red Deer and Vancouver, finishing with 36 points, 20 of them goals, in 55 games. . . .

Czech-ELHF Tomáš Plíhal (Kootenay, 2001-03) signed a one-year-plus-option deal with Třinec (Czech Republic, Extraliga). This season, with Tappara Tampere (Finland, Liiga), he had eight points, four of them goals, in 56 games. . . .

Czech-ELHF Petr Jelinek (Moose Jaw, Prince George, 2002-03, 2004-05) has signed a two-year contract with Liberec (Czech Republic, Extraliga). He played this season with Slavia Prague (Czech Republic, Extraliga), putting up 17 points, including five goals, in 42 games. . . .

F Marcin Kolusz (Vancouver, 2003-04) signed a one-year contract extension with Tychy (Poland, Ekstraliga). He started this season with Krynica (Poland, Ekstraliga), but was released for financial reasons in November and moved to Tychy. This season, he had 59 points, 20 of them goals, in 45 games. He was the captain of the winning Polish national team at the IIHF World championship Div 1B. He was named Poland’s top player, with five points, including three goals, in five games.

A huge thank you and a tip of the hat to Alan Caldwell of Small Thoughts At Large for all the work he puts into compiling information that ends up on his blog during the bantam draft. . . . The number of numbers, if you will, that he posts during the draft is phenomenal. . . . Thank you, sir! . . . I would nominate you for induction into the WHL Hall of Fame were there such a place.
---
If you are looking for round-by-round info on the bantam draft, please visit Small Thoughts At Large and you will find everything there.
What I have compiled, after a day of enjoying the weather here in Kamloops and doing a whole lot of yard work, are some news and notes, primarily on a few trades and bloodlines. . . .

1. The Red Deer Rebels dealt a 2014 second-round bantam draft pick to the Victoria Royals for D Brett Cote, who turns 20 on May 21. Cote spent three seasons with the Royals after being a third-round selection by the Chilliwack Bruins (remember them?) in the 2009 bantam draft. In 209 regular-season games with Victoria, he has 89 points, including 15 goals. . . . The Royals used the acquired pick to take F Ryan Peckford of the bantam AAA Spruce Grove, Alta., Saints. . . . Cote had been one of six 1994-born players on Victoria’s roster. Now the Royals are left with D Travis Brown, F Austin Carroll, F Steven Hodges, F Brandon Magee and G Patrik Polivka.

2. The Prince George Cougars dealt F Alex Forsberg, 19, to the Saskatoon Blades for F Haydn Hopkins, 17, and a third-round pick in Thursday’s draft. . . . Forsberg, the first overall selection in the 2010 bantam draft, has struggled with the Cougars. He didn’t finish the 2012-13 season after not returning to the team following the Christmas break. The Cougars, however, didn’t, or couldn’t, trade him, and he returned to them for this season. He had 28 points, six of them goals, in 44 games. Forsberg missed time with a concussion. In 131 career games, he had 87 points, including 30 goals. . . . The Cougars used the third-round pick to take F Ethan O’Rourke. . . . Hopkins, a 12th-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft, had 48 points, 17 of them goals, in 36 games with the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major Midget League. He got into four games with the Blades and earned one assist.

3. The Saskatoon Blades traded D Clay Kirichenko, 18, to the Vancouver Giants for two bantam draft picks -- a 2014 third-round selection and a fifth-round pick in 2016. . . . Kirichenko, from Sherwood Park, Alta., was a seventh-round pick in the 2010 draft. He had 12 points, including three goals, in 70 games this season. . . . The Blades used the third-round selection to take G Dorrin Luding of the bantam AAA North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks.

4. Later in the draft, there were a number of swaps, most involving a pick in a late round of this draft for one in a future draft. . . . The Victoria Royals traded a ninth-round pick to the Prince Albert Raiders for a 2015 ninth-round pick. The Raiders used the selection to take F Sam Huff of Maple Grove High School in Minnesota. . . . The Spokane Chiefs sent a 2015 ninth-round pick to the Lethbridge Hurricanes for a ninth-rounder yesterday, and used it to take D Tyler Jubenvill of Gilbert Plains, Man. . . . The Seattle Thunderbirds dealt a 2015 ninth-round pick to the Medicine Hat Tigers for a 2014 ninth-rounder and then took F Luke Ormsby of Los Angeles Jr. Kings or F Reg Pohl of the midget AAA Southwest Cougars in Manitoba. . . . The Saskatoon Blades gave up something (not sure what) to get a 10th-round pick from Lethbridge and then took F Jordan Robinson of Kelowna. . . . Prince Albert acquired a 2017 10th-round pick from the Kelowna Rockets for a 10th-rounder yesterday. The Rockets ended up with three 10-rounders, so took F David Laurin of Langley, B.C., G Matteo Paler-Chow of Vancouver or D Nick Nordstrom of Terrace, B.C., with that pick. . . . The Regina Pats acquired an 11th-round pick from the Swift Current Broncos and took F Robert Holmes from the bantam AAA Sherwood Park, Alta., Flyers.
---
BLOODLINES:
There will be some that aren’t on this list, but at first glance this is what I’ve got . . .
F Jordy Bellerive, taken second overall by the Lethbridge Hurricanes, is the younger brother of F Matt Bellerive, who was traded by the Kamloops Blazers to the Vancouver Giants later in the day. . . .
D Marcus Kichton, a second-round pick by the Moose Jaw Warriors, is the younger brother of former Spokane Chiefs D Brenden Kichton. . . .
F Erik Gardiner, who was taken in the second round by the Regina Pats, is the younger brother of Prince Albert Raiders F Reid Gardiner. . . .
The Victoria Royals used a second-round pick on D Brayden Pachal of Estevan, Sask. I am wondering if he might be related to former New Westminster Bruins F Clayton Pachal? . . .
In the second round, the Seattle Thunderbirds took F Matthew Wedman of the bantam AAA team at the South Side Athletic Club in Edmonton. He is a younger brother of Spokane Chiefs D Cole Wedman. . . . Another brother, Dan, has committed to Cornell U for 2015-16. A defenceman, Dan played the last two seasons with the AJHL‘s Bonnyville Pontiacs. . . .
D Josh Brook, a second-round pick by Moose Jaw, is the son of Dwayne Brook, who played in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders (1987-90). . . .
The Red Deer Rebels used a first-round pick, sixth overall, on F Jake Leschyshyn of Saskatoon, the son of former WHL and NHL D Curtis Leschyshyn, who spent this season as an assistant coach with the Saskatoon Blades. . . .
In the fourth round, the Kelowna Rockets selected F Cooper Haar of Huntington Beach, Calif. His older brother, Garrett, is a defenceman with the Portland Winterhawks. . . .
In the third round, the Portland Winterhawks took D Jake Hobson of Prince Albert. He is the son of Doug Hobson, a former WHL coach and player. . . .
In the fourth round, the Kootenay Ice selected F Max Patterson of Kamloops, the son of former Blazers F Ed Patterson, who is head coach of the junior B Kamloops Storm. . . .
The Lethbridge Hurricanes used a fourth-round pick to take D Koletrane Wilson of Edmonton. His brother, Klarc, played out his eligibility this season with the Prince George Cougars. . . .
F Kyler Yeo was taken by the Kamloops Blazers in the fourth round. He is the son of Minnesota Wild head coach Mike Yeo. Former Blazers D Darryl Sydor, who owns a piece of the WHL team, is an assistant coach under Yeo. . . .
With the final pick of the fourth round, Kelowna took F Jordan Sandhu of the bantam AAA Seafair Islanders on B.C.’s Lower Mainland. He is the brother of Everett Silvertips F Tyler Sandhu. . . .
The Kootenay Ice used a second-round pick to take G Jakob Walter of West Kelowna. His older brother, Lukas, played two seasons with the Tri-City Americans before finishing up his eligibility this season with the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs. . . .
D Jonathan Smart, who played at the Okanagan Hockey Academy, was selected by the Kelowna Rockets with the last pick of the first round. His father, Jason Smart, played with the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders (1986-90). Jonathan’s grandfather, Russ, scouts for the Vancouver Giants. . . .
In the sixth round, Everett took F Riley Sutter of Calgary. His father, Ron, is a former WHL and NHL forward. . . .
The Seattle Thunderbirds used a sixth-round pick on F Baker Shore of Cherry Hills Village, Colo. Three of his brothers -- Drew, Nick and Quentin -- all have been NHL draft picks. . . . Kelowna selected Nick in the 2007 bantam draft; Drew was taken by the Chilliwack Bruins in 2009. Drew, Nick and Quentin all played at the U of Denver. . . .
The Medicine Hat Tigers used a seventh-round pick to take F Sammy Walker of Edina, Minn. Two of his brothers, Ben and Jack, played with the Victoria Royals. . . .
---
OTHER DRAFT NOTES:
The Portland Winterhawks used the 11th-last pick in the draft to take F Trace Elson, 19, who has played in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels and Vancouver Giants. This season, he had three points in 15 games with the Giants, before finishing up with the AJHL’s Whitecourt Wolverines. . . . Later, Elson tweeted: “Didn't know I could get drafted as a 19 year old in the bantam draft. Don't mind that.” . . .
The Everett Silvertips selected D Wyatte Wylie of Lake Stevens, Wash., in the sixth round and took F Brendan Studioso of Mukilteo, Wash., in Round 7. They are the first two players ever to be drafted out of Everett’s minor hockey system. . . .
The Brandon Wheat Kings used their last pick to take D Mikey Anderson of Roseville, Minn. A year ago, the Wheat Kings took his brother, Joey, in the ninth round. . . . Both have said they will attend Minnesota-Duluth and play for the Bulldogs. . . .
As for the best name in the draft, I’m torn between F Sam Huff, who was selected by the Prince Albert Raiders, and D Koletrane Wilson, who was taken by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. . . . As a music fan, I’m inclined to go with Koletrane, but it’s close.
During the day, the Moose Jaw Warriors released two players off their roster -- D Kirk Johnson, 19, who played two seasons with them, and Russian F Alex Chirva, 18, who had six points in 58 games as a freshman. As Matthew Gourlie of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald reported, with Chirva gone the Warriors will be using the 12th overall pick in the CHL’s import draft. No, they won’t be taking a goaltender.
---
THE COACHING GAME:
The BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs have added Paul Nicolls as an assistant coach. He had been the team’s strength-and-conditioning coach. Nicolls’ association with the Chiefs began in 1990 when he played for them as a 16-year-old defenceman.
---
THE OHL FINAL:
F Jason Dickinson scored just 57 seconds into OT as the host Guelph Storm opened the best-of-seven championship series with a 3-2 victory over the North Bay Battalion. . . . Guelph got 32 saves from G Justin Nichols. . . . Storm F Zack Mitchell tied it 2-2 at 12:23 of the third period. . . . Game 2 is scheduled for tonight in Guelph.
