Five WHLers go in NHL's first round . . . Eakins back in coaching game . . . Pat Canadians have new coach

D Sergei Drozd (Tri-City, 2009-10) signed a one-year extension with Dinamo Minsk (Belarus, KHL). Last season, he had two goals and one assist in 57 games. . . .
F Nigel Dawes (Kootenay, 2001-05) signed a three-year extension with Barys Astana (Kazakhstan, KHL). Last season, in 60 games, he had 32 goals and 24 assists. He led his team in goals and points, and was second in the league in goals.
F Petr Kalus (Regina, 2005-06) signed a one-year contract with Grenoble (France, Ligue Magnus). Last season, with Herning (Denmark, Metal Ligaen), he had 21 goals and 18 assists in 35 games. He led the league in penalty minutes, with 178.

There were 17 CHL players selected in the first round of the NHL draft on Friday evening in Sunrise, Fla., the home of the Florida Panthers. Five of those 17 were from the WHL. . . . D Ivan Provorov of the Brandon Wheat Kings went to the Philadelphia Flyers at No. 7, followed by F Jake DeBrusk of the Swift Current Broncos to the Boston Bruins at No. 14, F Mathew Barzal of the Seattle Thunderbirds to the New York Islanders at No. 16, D Noah Juulsen of the Everett Silvertips to the Montreal Canadiens at No. 26, and F Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets to the Arizona Coyotes at No. 30. . . . The draft concludes today. . . .
The Vancouver Canucks selected F Brock Boeser with the 23rd selection. Boeser’s WHL rights belong to the Seattle Thunderbirds. He is from Burnsville, Minn., and has committed to North Dakota, something he reiterated after being drafted by Vancouver. Last season, he had 68 points, including 35 goals, in 57 games with the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks. . . . Four Russian-born players were selected in the first round, something that hadn’t happened since 2001.
——
The sale of the OHL’s Erie Otters came to a screeching halt on Friday as the league asked James A. Waters to cover US$175,000 in legal fees. Waters had agreed Thursday to buy the franchise out of bankruptcy for US$7,225,000. . . . Valerie Myers has the story right here.

Dallas Eakins is the new head coach of the San Diego Gulls, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Anaheim
Ducks. The Gulls are preparing for their first season in San Diego, after relocating from Norfolk, Va., where they were the Admirals. . . . Eakins spent more than one season as head coach of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers, going 36-63-14 before he was fired last season. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, with whom he was 157-114-41. . . . Eakins is believed to have interviewed with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, who are searching for a head coach. In fact, there has been speculation that the Giants’ three-candidate short list included Eakins, Ryan McGill and Lorne Molleken.
——
Darrin McKechnie is the new head coach of the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians. He replaces Brad Herauf, who now is an assistant coach with the Regina Pats. . . . McKechnie spent last season as an assistant coach with the Pats, but left in order to focus on his responsibilities with the Regina Police Service. He also coached the midget AA Regina Capitals, who won the South Saskatchewan league championship.

Best of the East . . . Coach resigns in Prince George . . . Cougars clinch playoff spot

Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix has polled the WHL’s Eastern Conference teams about the best this and the best that. It’s an interesting read and it’s right here. . . . This part especially stood out for me: “Teams submitted two ballots — one filled out by a member of the coaching staff and another by a player representative, in most cases the captain. The Edmonton Oil Kings refused to distribute the player ballot, their reason being that the poll was conducted too close to playoff time. As a result, their coach's selections were counted twice.” . . . What we have here is a serious case of bush league-itis. You have a newspaper, the StarPhoenix, that does a terrific job of covering the WHL and is willing to dedicate resources — space and a writer, for starters — to a project like this, and one team refuses to allow its players to participate. Surely, the WHL office could — ch-ch-ching! — dip into the defending Memorial Cup champion's thick wallet for this egregious faux pas.

Back in the 1980s, I knew her as Denise Lesiuk and she played the organ at Regina Pats’ games. Yes, she was good. Now, she is Denise Batters. She is a Canadian Senator and an advocate of mental-health issues. . . . Roy MacGregor of The Globe and Mail has more right here.
———
Ron Toigo, the Vancouver Giants’ majority owner, says his team will be back in the Pacific Coliseum again next season. Toigo and Giants general manager Scott Bonner answered questions from fans prior to last night’s game against the visiting Kelowna Rockets. . . . Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province has more right here.

THE COACHING GAME:

Dave Dupas resigned as head coach of the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday. He cited family BCHLreasons. The Spruce Kings went 27-24-1-6 (one tie, six OT losses) and finished third in the Mainland Division. They beat the Langley Rivermen in six games in a first-round series, then lost to the Chilliwack Chiefs in four. . . . Dupas had been the Spruce Kings’ head coach since Nov. 25, 2010. . . . Dupas has a home in West Kelowna. His wife and two sons stayed there while he coached in Prince George. . . . “I have some potential replacements in mind and I’m going to make some calls over the next few days and have some conversations with guys that I feel would be a good fit,” GM Mike Hawes said in a news release. “We’re in no rush to fill the spot but that being said I would like to fill the vacancy sooner than later so that the new coach can be heavily involved in the recruiting and building of next season’s team.”

THE WHL PLAYOFF PICTURE:

EAST DIVISION:
1. Brandon (1 game remaining) leads the overall standings by two points over Kelowna (1). Brandon needs one point to win its first Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy since 1995-96. . . . The Wheat Kings will meet Edmonton in the first round with the series opening in Brandon on Thursday. . . . At home to Moose Jaw tonight.
2. Regina (1) will finish second in division. Will meet third-place team in first round. . . . In Prince Albert tonight.
3. Swift Current (1) leads Moose Jaw by two points. . . . The Broncos need one point to clinch third place. . . . They entertain Lethbridge tonight.
4. Moose Jaw (1) is two points behind Swift Current. . . . Should the Broncos and Warriors end up tied, there would be a play-in game at the home of the team with the most victories. But if they end up tied, each team will have 33 victories. . . . The second tiebreaker is points in the season series. Each team has six of those. . . . The third tiebreaker is “highest ratio when taking goals for and subtracting goals against in regular-season play.”  The Broncos are minus-28; the Warriors are minus-38. . . . It would seem, then, that a tiebreaker, if needed, would be played in Swift Current. . . . The Warriors are in Brandon tonight and need a victory and a Broncos loss in regulation time to get to that tiebreaker. . . . Moose Jaw is expected to start Brody Willms, 16, in goal.
——
CENTRAL DIVISION:
1. Calgary (1) has a one-point lead over Medicine Hat. . . . At home to Kootenay on Sunday afternoon.
2. Medicine Hat (1) is one point behind Calgary. . . . Each team has 44 victories. . . . At home to Saskatoon tonight in the final regular-season game in the history of The Arena.
3. Red Deer (1) will finish third in the division and meet the second-place team in the first round. . . . At home to Edmonton tonight.
4. Kootenay (1) has wrapped up the conference’s first wild-card spot. . . . Will meet the division’s first-place team in the first round. . . . In Calgary on Sunday afternoon.
5. Edmonton (1) will finish in the conference’s second wild-card spot, meaning a first-round series that opens Thursday in Brandon. . . . In Red Deer tonight.
——
B.C. DIVISION:
1. Kelowna (1) trails Brandon by two points in the race for first place in the overall standings. The first tiebreaker is victories and they are tied, at 52. . . . The second tiebreaker is points in the season series; each team has two. . . . The third tiebreakers is the ratio in goals-for and goals-against. Kelowna is plus-119; Brandon is plus-114. . . . The Rockets are at home to Vancouver tonight.
2. Victoria (1) will finish second and meet Prince George in the first round. . . . That series opens Friday in Victoria. . . . The Royals are in Everett tonight.
3. Prince George (1) beat visiting Kamloops last night to clinch third place. . . . The Cougars will open a first-round series in Victoria on Friday. The Cougars were 3-3-2 in the season series; the Royals were 5-3-0. . . . Prince George is in Kamloops tonight.
4. Kamloops (1) can’t finish third in the division, but still could end up in the conference’s second wild-card spot. It is two points behind Tri-City (2). In order to force a play-in game, the Blazers need to beat visiting Prince George tonight and needs the Americans to lose in regulation tonight in Spokane and again Sunday at Portland. . . . Should that scenario play out, the Blazers and Americans would have a play-in game in Kennewick, Wash., likely on Tuesday. . . . Kamloops, which didn’t make the playoffs last season, has never been on the outside looking in two seasons in a row.
——
U.S. DIVISION:
1. Everett (2) has a two-point lead over Portland. . . . At home to Victoria tonight.
1. Portland (2) trails Everett by two points. . . . Each team has 42 victories. . . . Visits Seattle tonight.
3. Seattle (1) will finish third in the division, so will meet the second-place team in the first round. . . . At home to Portland tonight.
4. Spokane (2) is locked into the conference’s first wild-card spot. . . . Visits Tri-City tonight.
5. Tri-City (2) holds the conference’s second wild-card spot, two points ahead of Kamloops. . . . The team that finishes in that spot gets Kelowna in the first round. . . . The Americans are at home to Spokane tonight.

Injury bug biting Americans . . . Remembering Herb Brooks . . . Hitmen rise to top

When the Tri-City Americans filed their injury report with the WHL office on Monday, it included both their goaltenders, two defencemen and three forwards. Under ‘additions,’ the Americans listed the names of four affiliate players who have been brought in as the teams attempts to get through this adversity.
F Parker Bowles, who leads the Americans in assists (31) and points (44), and D Carter Cochrane are out indefinitely. Both have shoulder issues and might be done for the season.
F Braden Purtill is out for up to six weeks.
Richard Nejezchleb, who may be the most gifted offensive player on the roster, and D Dylan Coghlan both were listed as day-to-day, but they played last night against the visiting Portland Winterhawks.
G Eric Comrie, one of the best at his position in the WHL, will watch for up to three weeks, while G Evan Sarthou’s status has yet to be determined.
Last night, the Americans gave the start to G Nicholas Sanders, who has been with the midget AAA Calgary Buffaloes. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2013 bantam draft.
Casey Kaiser, a 19-year-old from Richland, Wash., backed up Sanders. Kaiser made his first WHL appearance and start Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the visiting Calgary Hitmen.
The Americans also have recalled F Zack Andrusiak, from the junior B North Okanagan Knights of the Kootenay International Junior League; F Parker AuCoin, from the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders; and F Morgan Geekie from the Yellowhead Chiefs of the Manitoba Midget AAA League.
Aucoin was the 15th overall selection in that 2013 bantam draft, while Geekie was taken in the fifth round.
AuCoin made his WHL debut last night; Andrusiak and Geekie were scratched, as was freshman F Max James.
Tri-City didn’t show D Brandon Carlo on its injury report, but he missed his third game last night since taking a puck to the head. Carlo played for the U.S. at the 2015 WJC.
Bob Tory, the Americans’ general manager, has been working in the WHL since at least 1982, including stints with the Prince Albert Raiders, Portland and Kootenay Ice. He told Taking Note that he has never experienced anything like this season.
“This is the worst year yet,” he stated in a text. “One year in Kootenay we were hit hard but nothing like this, and not one is a concussion.”
On top of it all, Tory pointed out, that the Americans have had others players “out long term before this who have returned. And others who have had two long-term injuries this season.”
Through it all, the Americans are clinging to the Western Conference’s second wild-card playoff berth, five points ahead of the Prince George Cougars.
“I hope we can hang on for playoffs,” Tory said. “The kids are trying.”
———

Mike Priestner, the owner of the Saskatoon Blades, was in Saskatoon on Tuesday so he and GM/head coach Bob Woods chatted with season-ticket holders during a luncheon. . . . The Blades won’t be in the playoffs, but that doesn’t surprise Priestner, who believes the rebuild is going in the right direction. . . . He also said the franchise is losing money. “We’re not losing a bunch of money. We’re losing some money,” Priestner said. “It was expected coming in. I didn’t think the crowds would be where they’re at. I probably thought they’d be in that 4,800 to 5,000 range.” . . . Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix was there and his story is right here.
———
Tim Speltz, GM of the Spokane Chiefs.
Tim Speltz, the general manager of the Spokane Chiefs since 1990, has been added to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence management group for 2015-16. He will work in support of the U-20 program, which primarily involved the Canadian national junior team that will play in the 2016 WJC in Helsinki, Finland. . . . Speltz is no stranger to Hockey Canada, having worked with the management group for the Canadian U-18 team that won gold at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. . . .  Bruce Hamilton, the owner and general manager of the Kelowna Rockets, worked with the U-20 program for 2014-15.
———

Taylor Rocca of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman has a game story from Saturday’s game right here. . . .

In Medicine Hat, the Lethbridge Hurricanes completed a weekend sweep of the Tigers by winning, 4-1. . . . On Friday night, the host Hurricanes got past the Tigers, 4-3. . . . In Kennewick, Wash., the Tri-City Americans erased a 1-0 deficit with four straight goals and beat the Everett Silvertips, 4-3. . . . They are fifth in the U.S. Division, but have possession of the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot. It would appear that all five U.S. Division teams will make the playoffs. . . . Everett (33-16-4) had won its previous two outings. The Silvertips are at home to Portland today with a five-point lead over the second-place Winterhawks. . . .
