Here is an update, as near as I can figure, on WHL teams and their import players with training camps opening this week:
EAST DIVISION
BRANDON: Czech C Daniel Bartek is back for a second WHL season after being acquired from Tri-City last season. Swiss RW Juraj Simek, 20, is on the roster but has signed with the Vancouver Canucks and could play in their organization. Russian D Nikolai Lukyanchikov, picked in the 2007 import draft, likely won’t be in camp.
MOOSE JAW: Czech C Tomas Karpov and Slovakian LW Martin Filo, both 2007 import draft picks, will be in camp.
PRINCE ALBERT: PRINCE ALBERT: Czech D Tomas Voracek and German C Maximilian Brendl, both picks in the 2007 import draft, are in town.
REGINA: Latvian LW Kaspars Saulietis, acquired from Kelowna last season, and Czech C Rudolf Cerveny, the 37th pick in the 2007 import draft, will be in camp.
SASKATOON: Freshman Finnish D Jyri Niemi will play for the Blades, as will Slovakian RW Robert Brandis. Both were 2007 import draft picks.
SWIFT CURRENT: Freshman Czech C Jan Dalecky will be in camp, to be joined by sophomore Czech C David Stieler. Should Czech C Daniel Rakos, 20, try to crack the roster for a third season, he would be a two-spotter.
CENTRAL DIVISION
CALGARY: Slovenian LW Bostjan Golicic and Slovakian LW Martin Stepan, both 2007 import picks, are on the roster.
EDMONTON: Czech C Tomas Vincour, the first pick in the 2007 import draft, will be in camp. Also there will be Swedish LW Robin Figren, who was acquired from Calgary in the expansion draft.
KOOTENAY: Veteran Swiss RW Arnaud Jacquement is back. Czech D Jiri Ryzuk, a 2007 import pick, will be in camp.
LETHBRIDGE: Finnish G Juha Metsola and Swiss D Luca Sbisa, both 2007 import draft picks, will be in camp.
MEDICINE HAT: Czech G Tomas Vosvrda is in town; Swedish F Michael Ahlen is expected. Both were 2007 import draft picks.
RED DEER: Czech C Tomas Polak is there. . . . Russian LW Kirill Starkov, who will go to camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets, may come back but would be a two-spotter.
U.S. DIVISION
EVERETT: Slovakian C Lukas Vartovnik is back for a second season. . . . Word is that Russian C Vitali Karamnov, a 2007 import pick, will be in camp. . . . Also back is Czech LW Ondrej Fiala, who left the team late last season to return home for knee surgery. The Minnesota Wild draft pick was at the NHL team’s summer camp but wasn’t able to take part in all drills. As a 20-year-old, Fiala would be a two-spotter.
PORTLAND: Veteran Swedish LW Viktor Sjodin is back and will be joined by freshman Czech LW Radim Valchar.
SEATTLE: Finnish G Riku Helenius, a 2007 import pick who has signed with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, is with the Thunderbirds. Veteran Czech LW Jan Eberle returns.
SPOKANE: Austrian D Stefan Ulmer, a 2007 import pick, and veteran Czech LW Ondrej Roman will be in camp. Ulmer played in Switzerland last season and is seen as a puck-moving d-man.
TRI-CITY: Czech C Petr Stoklasa and Czech D Josef Tichy, both selected in the 2007 import draft, are expected in camp by Monday.
B.C. DIVISION
CHILLIWACK: Swedish star Oscar Moller is back. Czech D David Hoda, a 2007 import draft pick, isn’t on the Bruins’ roster.
KAMLOOPS: Finnish RW Juuso Puustinen and Slovakian LW Ivan Rohac are back for their second seasons.
KELOWNA: Slovakian C Milan Kytnar is expected in camp; Swedish C Mikael Backlund isn’t. Both were 2007 import draft picks.
PRINCE GEORGE: Swedish D Patrik Magnusson and Czech C Jan Kupec, both 2007 import picks, arrived in town this week.
VANCOUVER: Czech RW Michal Repik and Slovakian D Juraj Valach, acquired from Tri-City over the summer, are veterans and will be in camp. Slovakian C Mario Bliznak, 20, has signed with the Vancouver Canucks; he would be a two-spotter if he ended up back with the Giants.
