Notes . . .

Former NHL defenceman Bob Rouse has joined the Chilliwack Bruins’ coaching staff as a part-time assistant. Rouse, who played 1,061 NHL games with five clubs, is a former WHLer who played with Billings, Nanaimo and Lethbridge.

When the Red Deer Rebels open camp this week they will have four 20-year-olds in camp, but two of them -- C Brett Sutter and RW J.D. Watt -- will leave for camp with the Calgary Flames and could play in the NHL team’s system somewhere. Also in Red Deer’s camp will be F Adam Ross of Edmonton, who is coming off two seasons with the QMJHL’s Victoriaville Tigres, and F Ryan Fuller of San Jose, who placed last season with the NAHL’s Texas Tornado. . . . Red Deer may also get LW Kirill Starkov back from the camp of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Should he return, the Rebels would be faced with a decision of whether to keep a two-spotter (import 20-year-old).

Czech LW Ondrej Fiala appears to have kissed and made up with the Everett Silvertips. Fiala, 20, left the Silvertips late last season to return home to Czech Republic for knee surgery. At the time, the Silvertips felt he had left them in a bit of a bind, with it being so late in the season. Now, however, it appears that will be in camp with Everett, although he may not yet be cleared to take part in all workouts. A Minnesota draft pick, he skated at a Wild summer camp but couldn’t take part in all practices. He may show for Everett’s camp before going to the Wild’s camp, after which he could be returned to the Silvertips. Should that happen, Everett will have a decision to make as he would be a two-spotter. Also expected in camp are sophomore Slovakian LW Lukas Vartovnik and freshman Russian C Vitali Karamnov.

LW Garet Hunt, who suffered a horribly broken leg in a Feb. 9 game against the visiting Kamloops Blazers, appears ready to go again. Hunt, 20, will attend the Vancouver Canucks’ rookie camp on a free-agent tryout next month in Victoria. Hunt told the Province’s Steve Ewen that he is 25 per cent stronger and more explosive than he was before he was injured.
