Friday . . .

The Portland Winter Hawks have dealt C Thomas Frazee, 17, to the Medicine Hat Tigers for RW Tyler Swystun, 19, and a 2008 fourth-round bantam draft pick. Swystun had 36 points as a rookie last season after leaving the U of Michigan. The Prince George Cougars took him sixth overall in the 2003 draft and dealt him to the Tigers when he wouldn’t report. Frazee, the 11th overall pick in the 2005 draft, had 12 points with the Winter Hawks last season. The Winter Hawks sent Frazee home late in the season to deal with some off-ice issues. "It's a lot of little things that added up, a number of off-ice issues," then-head coach Mike Williamson told the Portland Tribune. . . . This puts Portland back into the fourth round as it had traded its 2008 fourth-round pick to the Seattle Thunderbirds for LW Robert Klinkhammer, 20, on Sept. 27.

The Everett Silvertips have hired Jon Rosen, a 26-year-old native of Los Angeles, to replace Keith Gerhardt as director of broadcasting, media and public relations. Yes, that means he is the new radio voice of the Silvertips. Rosen has been calling the play for baseball’s High Desert Mavericks, the Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, for three seasons. While at the U of Michigan, he was on the Wolverines’ telecast crew for four years. Gerhardt left the Silvertips earlier this month in order to move to Indianapolis.

LW Kieran Block, who played for the Medicine Hat Tigers (2002-06) before going to the U of Alberta, is recovering from injuries suffered while cliff jumping at a lake in Jasper National Park. Alberta head coach Eric Thurston told the Medicine Hat News that Block, 22, had made three successful jumps, was injured on the fourth and had to be airlifted to Edmonton. According to Thurston, Block has serious leg injuries, including a fractured heel in one foot and a broken ankle in the other leg. He also underwent reconstructive knee surgery.

Medicine Hat D Trevor Glass, 19, has accepted a free-agent tryout deal from the St. Louis Blues, while Tigers C Daine Todd, 20, will go to camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

C Chris Ray, who captained the Kelowna Rockets last season as a 20-year-old, has decided to attend the U of Waterloo and play for the Warriors.

Great chart on James Mirtle’s blog — mirtle.blogspot.com — showing players who got into at least five NHL games last season and will play in Europe this season. It’s quite a list. Check it out.

Jeff Petry, son of former Detroit Tigers right-hander Dan Petry, was a second-round pick by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL’s 2006 draft. A 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenceman, Petry played last season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL. This season, he’ll be a freshman at Michigan State. “I was a good first baseman,” he told the Detroit News of his baseball career, “but I couldn’t hit.” Presumably, that isn’t a problem in hockey.
