The Medicine Hat Tigers, who are 3-0 in the preseason, trimmed five players from their roster and now have 25 players with them. Gone are G Tyler Bunz, 15, G Alex Wright, 17, RW Killian Hunt, 16, D Tyson Newell, 16, and D Andrew Hanson, 17. The Tigers have two goaltenders on their roster — Ryan Holfeld and Tomas Vosvrda, both of whom are 18. Holfeld backed up Matt Keetley last season, while Vosvrda was picked up in the CHL’s 2007 import draft. . . .
The Calgary Hitmen got C T.J. Galiardi (Colorado Avalanche) and Slovenian LW Bosthan Golicic (Atlanta Thrashers) back from NHL camps. Galiardi, who spent last season at Dartmouth, was a second-round pick of the Avs in the NHL’s 2007 draft. Golicic, selected by the Hitmen in the 2007 CHL import draft, was a free-agent invitee in Atlanta. . . . The Hitmen have six other players at NHL camps — D Karl Alzner (Washington), C Ian Duval (Tampa Bay), RW Carson McMillan (Minnesota), D Alex Plante (Edmonton), C Brett Sonne (St. Louis) and C Ryan White (Montreal). . . .
Victor Bartley and Scott Jackson, two WHL defencemen who got tryout agreements with the Detroit Red Wings, are going to the NHL team’s main training camp. Bartley, an undrafted 19-year-old from the Kamloops Blazers, and Jackson, a 20-year-old from the Seattle Thunderbirds who didn’t sign after being drafted by the St. Louis Blues two years ago, played for Detroit’s rookie team at a tournament in Traverse City, Mich. At tournament’s end, they were added to the Red Wings’ main camp roster. . . . Also in the camp are Detroit draft picks Logen Pyett of the Regina Pats and Chad Greenan of the Kootenay Ice, both of whom also are defencemen. . . .
The expansion Edmonton Oil Kings got their roster down to 24 by reassigning three players. G Chris Ward, 18, will join the MJHL’s South Winnipeg Blues, with D Henrik Tervonen, 16, and LW Rhett Rachinski, 16, both reporting to the midget AAA Edmonton South Side Athletic Club. . . . The Oil Kings are left with two goaltenders — Alex Archibald, 20, and Dalyn Flette, 17 — along with eight defencemen and 14 forwards. . . .
The QMJHL has announced that RĂ©seau des sports, Canada’s French 24-hour sports TV network, has signed on to sponsor its hall of fame, while now will be known as the QMJHL Hall of Fame presented by RDS. Which brings me to ask, once again, why the WHL doesn’t have a Hall of Fame? . . .
WEDNESDAY’S GAME
Lethbridge 2, Kootenay 1 — Yashar Farmanara and Taylor Piller scored for the host Hurricanes (2-1). Lethbridge goaltender Juha Metsola went the distance with 27 saves. Lethbridge was 1-for-12 on the PP; Kootenay was 0-for-10. Sorry, haven't been able to find Ice stats.
