Wednesday . . . for starters

The Kamloops Blazers reassigned two players Wednesday and welcomed one back from an NHL camp. . . . G Jon Groenheyde, 16, a Surrey native who had a tremendous camp and exhibition season, was assigned to the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, as was RW Matt Riley, 16, who is from Coquitlam. Groenheyde was a free-agent find, while Riley was the 67th pick in the 2006 bantam draft. . . . As well, Finnish sophomore RW Juuso Puustinen was returned by the NHL’s Calgary Flames. . . . Still missing from Kamloops are D Victor Bartley, who was with the Detroit Red Wings’ rookie team, and D Keaton Ellerby, who will go to main camp with the Florida Panthers. . . .

C Andrew Clark, 19, has returned to the Brandon Wheat Kings from the NHL’s St. Louis Blues. Clark led Brandon in goals (28) last season when he totaled 60 points. He played for the Blues‚ rookie team at a tournament in Traverse City, Mich. . . . The Wheat Kings also got D Keith Aulie (Calgary Flames) back last night. The only player missing now is D Daryl Boyle (Boston Bruins). . . . RW Buddy Yewchyn, 17, has joined the Wheat Kings after missing most of camp with an injury. Yewchyn, from Winnipeg, may play in a home-and-home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors this weekend. . . .

Congrats to the Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers for becoming involved in the first “multiple fight situation” of the WHL season — you should know that only the common people use the phrase “line brawl.” Anyway, both teams have been fined $250 for the situation that developed in The Hat on Sunday. As well, Regina’s Marco Insam and Matt Delahey and Medicine Hat’s Tyson Newell and Cory More all drew one-game suspensions. . . .

There will be, I’m told, 10 new referees working WHL games this season. Two veterans who won’t be back are Kyle Rehman, who has gone pro and is expected to work mainly in the AHL this season, and Rob Matsuoka, who has retired. . . .

The Spokane Chiefs expect C Chris Bruton (St. Louis Blues) and LW Ondrej Roman (Dallas Stars) back by the weekend. They were at a rookie tournament in Traverse City, Mich. . . . LW Drayson Bowman is on his way to the Carolina Hurricanes’ camp so won’t play in the Chiefs’ final preseason game against the visiting Tri-City Americans. The Chiefs take a 5-0 record into the game.
