Friday . . .

D Lyon Messier, 20, who started the season in the Edmonton Oil Kings’ camp and played a bit with the Kelowna Rockets, now is with the OHL’s Erie Otters. Messier, the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Messier, made his OHL debut in a 5-3 loss to the Sarnia Sting on Thursday. . . . Lyon was released by Kelowna at the 20-year-old deadline after going pointless in four games with the Rockets. . . . He spent the previous two seasons with the NAHL Texas Tornado. . . .

The Brandon Wheat Kings have assigned D Matt Smith, 18, to the SJHL’s La Ronge Ice Wolves. He was pointless and plus-2 in two games with the Wheaties. . . .

Here’s Kevin Paul Dupont, in Friday’s Boston Globe, after the Bruins beat the visiting Lightning the previous night: “Only 2:17 into the night's entertainment (there's that weird word again), incredible hulk of a rookie Milan Lucic dropped the gloves and put a hammering on Tampa Bay's Nick Tarnasky, the pride of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Lucky for Tarnasky, he inherited a rock jaw, upon which the exuberant, if not frenetic, Lucic dropped about a half-dozen steaming right hands. The crowd, some of whom no doubt remember when those bouts were common, if not mandatory, loved the sudden outbreak of the sweet science. Lucic, essentially still on a tryout, hoping to stay in the NHL and not be returned to his Vancouver Giants junior team, could quickly become a fan favorite/cult hero in the Hub of Hockey if he continues to play the hammer to his opposite number's nail.” . . .

Sorry, Don Hay, but it sounds like you can forget about getting Lucic back this season. The Bruins have had enough trouble attracting fans the last few seasons that they aren't likely to risk upsetting their fans by ridding themselves of a player who quickly has won them over.
. . . Although this is Boston and you may recall that Joe Thornton used to play there.
