Monday . . .

Garth MacBeth, our man with an eye on Europe, reports today that D Trevor Johnson (Kootenay/Seattle/Tri-City) has signed with Asiago of Italy’s Serie A1. Asiago is coached by Jim Camazzola (Kamloops Junior Oilers) and also has Frank DeFrenza (Victoria/Kamloops/Tri-City) in the lineup. . . . Johnson likely fills the spot on Asiago’s roster that was created when D Darcy Robinson of Kamloops collapsed and died during a game earlier in the season.

Dave Siciliano, the original head coach of the Edmonton/Kootenay Ice, became the second head coach in USHL history to earn 500 victories when his Sioux City Musketeers scored a 6-5 shootout victory over the Lincoln Stars. After Friday, Siciliano was 17 victories behind Bob Ferguson, who also coached in Sioux City. . . . Siciliano coached the USHL’s Thunder Bay Flyers before landing with the Ice. . . . After Friday, Siciliano’s USHL coaching record was 500-212-51; in 18 seasons, Ferguson went 517-314-42 with Sioux City and Des Moines. . . .

Mark Janssens, who played four WHL seasons with the Regina Pats, has hired on with the Portland Winter Hawks as, according to a press release, “Special Consultant to the CEO in the area of Hockey Operations.” Again, according to a release, “Janssens will provide Winter Hawks CEO and Principal Owner Jim Goldsmith with direct input on all hockey-related matters including scouting, active roster and list management, personnel moves and draft preparation.” . . . Janssens played in the NHL with Chicago, Phoenix, the New York Islanders and Rangers, Anaheim and Hartford, and has an BA from New York U and an MBA from Columbia. . . . You can’t have too many good people in your organization, and Janssens is certainly one of hockey’s good people. . . . And the Winter Hawks, with the WHL’s poorest record, need all the good people they can find. . . . The Winter Hawks, who are 3-19-0-0, have won just six times in their last 52 games over two seasons.
