Pierro-Zabotel on the move

Chris Dilks at westerncollegehockey.blogspot.com is reporting that C Casey Pierro-Zabotel has signed with the Vancouver Giants. According to Dilks, Pierro-Zabotel “didn't get a high enough test score to qualify for college” so won’t be going to Michigan Tech. . . . Pierro-Zabotel, a third-round selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL’s 2007 draft, has been playing with the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials. . . .

From Garth MacBeth, who keeps track of European happenings on our behalf . . . F Boris Protsenko (Calgary) has signed with Kompanion Kiev of the Ukraine Supreme League, the only league this season in Ukraine. Protsenko played for Berkut Brovary in the same league last season, getting 13 goals and 22 assists in 16 games. There isn’t a single recognizable name in the entire league and it doesn’t look like the league draws well . . . The largest crowd Garth could find at any one game was 300 . . . And, as he noted, the top team in Ukraine, Sokol Kiev, plays in the Russian High League (the second level) . . .

G David Reekie, 20, whose last WHL stop was with the Everett Silvertips, has joined the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires. But this guy just can’t but a break. On the day he arrived in Windsor, Spitfires GM Warren Rychel swung a deal with the Plymouth Whalers that landed Czech G Michal Neuvirth, 19. All Neuvirth did last season was backstop the Whalers to the Memorial Cup tournament. Oh, and the Spitfires have another goaltender, too, in Andrew Engelage, who has been their starter. . . .
