More from Thursday . . .

I have never met Tony Aasman but I just know he is one of those people whose presence is vital if a community is to have vibrant minor sports scene. A long-time volunteer in minor hockey in Medicine Hat, Tony has run into some serious health problems and the Medicine Hat Tigers are going to do their part to help out. The Tigers have announced that all proceeds from their Tuesday exhibition game with the visiting Prince Albert Raiders will go to the Aasman family. . . . Now what makes this even more special is that Tony will be behind the Tigers’ bench for at least part of the game while his son, Ryan, the eighth overall pick in the 2007 bantam draft, will be in the Raiders’ lineup. . . . “One of Tony’s dreams was to coach in the WHL and we are going to make that dream come true,” said Dave Andjelic, the Tigers’ director of marketing and public relations. “Tony will be behind the Tigers bench for the game and it should be extra special that his son Ryan will be participating in the game as well.” . . . Tickets are on sale at the Tigers’ office at $10 a pop.

The Swift Current Broncos have signed three players – D Andrew Hewett, 18; G Austin Smith, 15; and D Allistair Chapman, 16. . . . Hewett was a seventh-round bantam draft pick of the Brandon Wheat Kings in 2005. He has been on the Bronco’s list since 2006. Hewett had 18 points and 114 penalty minutes in 39 games with the MJHL’s Winnipeg South Blues last season. . . . Smith, from Calgary, was a second-round selection by the Broncos in the 2008 draft. . . . Chapman, who also is from Calgary, was a fifth-round pick by the Broncos in the 2007 draft. He played for the midget AAA Calgary Flames, picking up 11 points and 30 penalty minutes in 37 games.

What are the hockey fans of southwestern Manitoba waiting for? The Wheat Kings, who will be one of the WHL’s championship contenders this season, were closing in on 2,200 season tickets as of Thursday afternoon, which is well shy of last season’s record-breaking total of more than 2,700. One adult season ticket goes for $299 and it’s $148 for anyone 18 and under. Gotta think that’s one of the better entertainment deals in the Westman area.

LW Daniel Bartek didn’t practise with the Brandon Wheat Kings on Thursday. He’s needs a transer from the Czech Ice Hockey Federation. Brandon owner/GM/head coach Kelly McCrimmon told the Brandon Sun that transfer’s arrival is imminent.
---
The Everett Silvertips are believed to be shopping RW Jordan Mistelbacher, 18, and D Tyler Kieffer, 19, around the WHL. Both players were sent home over the Labour Day Weekend for violating team rules. They are believed to have missed curfew. . . . Everett GM Doug Soetaert and Regina GM Brent Parker also are believed to have done some talking recently, with the Silvertips perhaps interested in acquiring a goaltender from the Pats.
---
D Jordan Bendfeld, 20, has signed a three-year deal with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. He was the Oilers’ fifth pick in the 2008 NHL draft. Bendfeld, from Leduc, Alta., spent four seasons with the Tigers.
---
The Prince Albert Raiders have signed three players – G Jacob Edwards, 16; LW Brent Martin, 16; and, C Robbie Ciolfi, 17. . . . Edwards, from Calgary, was a sixth-round pick in the 2007 bantam draft. . . . Martin, who is from Spruce Grove, Alta., and Ciolfi, who is from Lethbridge, were acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in January as part of the deal in which D Jeff May went to the Hurricanes. . . . Edwards, Martin and Ciolfi will play for the Raiders in the Ice Breaker tournament in Saskatoon this weekend.
---
The Vancouver Giants’ roster stands at 31, including three goaltenders, as they prepare to go home-and-home with the Kelowna Rockets on Friday (North Delta) and Saturday (Kelowna). But the Giants did make a move when they dropped D Wes Vannieuwenhuizen, 16, who may have had the longest nameplate in the league had he stuck.
