SATURDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:
There were four shutouts on Saturday, which means the WHL is on pace to have its goaltenders put up 352 of them this season. Yes, that would be a record. . . . There also was a line brawl of some sort -- perhaps Portland and Spokane don't like each other, if you didn't know -- so Richard Doerksen, the WHL's disciplinarian, will be busy early in the week. . . . In fact, there may be discipline doled out Sunday morning as the Winter Hawks are to play at home against the Kelowna Rockets on Sunday night.

In Prince Albert, G Adam Morrison stopped 29 shots as the Saskatoon Blades dumped the Raiders, 1-0. . . . Morrison is a 17-year-old freshman from Surrey, B.C. He was making his first WHL start. . . . The Raiders had won 8-2 in Saskatoon on Friday. . . . F Walker Wintoneak had the game’s only goal, at 8:57 of the second period. . . . Raiders G Steven Stanford stopped 36 shots.

In Swift Current, the Broncos completed a weekend sweep of the Moose Jaw Warriors, winning 3-2 on RW Keegan Dansereau’s goal with 7:16 left in the third period. . . . The Broncos won 6-1 on Friday in Moose Jaw. . . . Warriors G Todd Mathews stopped 32 saves. That included a second-period stop on a penalty shot attempt by Swift Current F Matt Tassone.

In Everett, G Jamie Tucker put up a shutout in his WHL debut as the Vancouver Giants beat the Silvertips, 4-0. . . . Tucker, a 17-year-old from Victoria, stopped 30 shots. . . . G Tyson Sexsmith, who is expected to be the Giants’ starter, is in camp with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. . . . Vancouver scored PP goals on three of its first five opportunities, with Neil Manning, Evander Kane and Mike Piluso scoring. . . . Everett went 0-for-8 on the PP.

In Prince George, the Cougars dumped the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-0 for their second victory over the visitors in two nights. . . . Prince George had opened with a 5-2 victory on Friday. . . . G Kevin Armstrong, acquired in an offseason swap with the Spokane Chiefs, had 32 saves for his sixth career shutout. . . . D Dallas Jackson, at 16:50 of the second, and F Alex Poulter, at 14:59 of the third, had the goals. . . . Attendance was 2,917.

In Kennewick, Wash., the Tri-City Americans raised the first banners in franchise history and then went out and beat the Kelowna Rockets, 5-2. . . . The Americans won the U.S. Division, Western Conference and WHL regular-season points titles last season. . . . C Jason Reese scored three times for the Americans, who got a goal and two assists from F Johnny Lazo. . . . Prior to the game, the Rockets had announced the acquisition of G Kris Lazaruk, 20, from the Kootenay Ice for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2010 bantam draft. It turns out that G Torrie Jung, 19, who had been expected to be the Rockets’ starter, wasn’t with the team when it left for Kennewick on Friday. . . . Lazaruk went the distance for the Rockets, finishing with 28 saves. . . . “Kris became available, and he was someone we talked about as a possible candidate over the summer,” Bruce Hamilton, the Rockets’ general manager, told Doyle Potenteau of the Kelowna Daily Courier. “He has some pretty good playoff experience and we think he’s the right guy, though I still think we paid a pretty good price. “Torrie’s on the (trade) wire, and we’ll see if there’s any interest in him. But I know we’ll get (Lazaruk) into the lineup (against Tri-City).” . . . The Americans, with G Chet Pickard in camp with the NHL’s Nashville Predators, went with Drew Owsley in goal. The 17-year-old from Lethbridge made 24 saves in his first WHL appearance.

In Red Deer, the Rebels dumped the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-4 on F Cody Esposito’s shootout goal. . . . C Tomas Polak had two goals for the Rebels. He forced OT at 15:57 of the third. . . . All of Medicine Hat’s goals, two of them from F Mark Isherwood, came via the PP. The Tigers finished 4-for-7 on the PP; the Rebels were 0-for-8. . . . The circus took 24 shooters, the first 10 of whom didn’t score, with the Rebels winning that part of the game, 4-3.

In Chilliwack, the Bruins won their third straight home-opener as they beat the Kamloops Blazers 5-4 in a shootout. . . . The Bruins are in their third WHL season. . . . Kamloops RW Jimmy Bubnick tied the game with goals at 15:30 and 19:43 of the third period. . . . The Bruins won it on F Ryan Howse’s goal in the circus. He was the only one of five shooters to score.

In Portland, G Dustin Tokarski stopped 40 shots to lead the defending Memorial Cup-champion Spokane Chiefs to a 3-0 victory over the Winter Hawks. . . . The shutout was the ninth of his career. . . . The game also marked the regular-season debut of Spokane head coach Hardy Sauter, who was an assistant with the Chiefs last season. . . . The Chiefs scored three times in the third period, with defencemen Brett Bartman, Stefan Ulmer and Jared Cowen getting the goals. C Mitch Wahl drew three assists. . . . The game featured a line brawl at 16:48 of the third period.
