Blazers box

THE SCORE
SUNDAY
Prince Albert 3, Kamloops 2
SATURDAY
Chilliwack 3, Kamloops 2

WHAT HAPPENED
The Blazers weren’t able to turn a dominant second period Sunday into a
victory and lost when they gave up two — actually, three; one that should
have counted was disallowed — third-period goals. . . . On Saturday, the
Blazers simply didn’t have enough “want to” in the offensive zone.

THE STANDINGS
After the l-o-n-g weekend, the Blazers (4-6-0-1) are seventh in the 10-team
Western Conference, one point behind the Kelowna Rockets (5-5-0-0) and two
ahead of the Everett Silvertips (3-4-1-0).

THE CLOSE ONES
Since beating the Blades 8-2 in Saskatoon on opening night, Prince Albert
has played 10 games and each one has been decided by one goal, with the
Raiders winning half of them.

THE ANKLE
Kamloops LW Shayne Wiebe sprained an ankle in Sunday’s first period and
didn’t return. He is expected to miss a week to 10 days. He said later that
he was held out for “precautionary reasons.”

THE GOALTENDER, Part 1
Prince Albert G Garrett Zemlak, a summer-time acquisition from the hated
Saskatoon Blades, is 5-0-0-0 this season. He gave his side a chance to win
Sunday.

THE GOALTENDER, Part 2
You can bet that Saturday’s game was a dream come true for Lucas Gore, who
was born and raised and played his minor hockey in Kamloops. The Bruins’
freshman goaltender stopped 32 shots in beating the Blazers.

THE METAL
In Saturday’s second period, with the teams tied 2-2, Kamloops C C.J.
Stretch, from low on the left side, took a shot that beat G Lucas Gore only
to have the puck hit both posts and stay out.

THE RIVALRY
The Bruins now are 2-0 against the Blazers this season. On Sept. 20, the
Bruins, playing at home, won 5-4 in a shootout.

THE DAILY NEWS THREE STARS

1. G Garrett Zemlak, Prince Albert. Would have stopped the kitchen sink.

2. C Justin Bernhardt, Prince Albert. Three points.

3. RW Jimmy Bubnick, Kamloops. His line was team’s best.

SATURDAY

1. G Lucas Gore, Chilliwack. Made the saves he needed to make.

2. LW Shayne Wiebe, Kamloops. Super-pest scores again.

3. LW Kevin Sundher, Chilliwack. A bright future.

UP NEXT
The Blazers head south this weekend — they’re in Spokane on Friday and
Everett on Saturday — before coming home to entertain the Tri-City Americans
on Oct. 21.
