Wheaties, Blazers make a deal

The Kamloops Blazers have dealt D Mark Schneider, 18, to the Brandon Wheat Kings for a seventh-round pick in the 2009 or 2010 bantam draft, at Brandon’s option. Schneider has been a healthy scratch for five of the Blazers’ first 11 games, including Monday’s 3-2 loss to the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. A native of Brandon, he is the son of former Wheat Kings centre Ken Schneider (1979-82). . . . This is the second time in a couple of weeks these teams have gotten together and cut a deal. On Sept. 29, the Blazers sent G James Priestner, 17, to Brandon for a 2009 third-round bantam draft pick.

F Steve Gainey, who spent last season on the coaching staff of the Kamloops Blazers, has signed with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads. Gainey, 29, is expected to be in the Steelheads’ lineup when they open their season Saturday. "The success of the organization and the probability of a strong team this season is the main draw for me here with the Steelheads," said Gainey in a statement issued by the Steelheads. "And, I had some personal connections with (Darrell) Hay, (Marty) Flichel, (Derek) Paget, and (Garett) Bembridge who I've met before, and the proximity to my hometown of Kamloops was also appealing." . . . The Idaho head coach is former Brandon Wheat Kings winger Derek Laxdal.

The Edmonton Oil Kings have added G Laurent Brossoit to their roster. A 15-year-old native of Surrey, B.C., he was the 26th pick in the 2008 bantam draft. As a 1993-born player, he is eligible to play five games with the Oil Kings this season until his regular team has its season end; then he may join the Oil Kings for the remainder of the WHL season.
