A couple of Monday moves . . .

D Scott Gabriel, 20, and the Portland Winter Hawks have parted company. With the Portland coaching staff wanting to play the younger players, Gabriel’s ice time was getting slashed and the two parties apparently agreed to a parting of the ways. Gabriel, who was in his fourth WHL season, is waiting to see if any other WHL team might be interested in him. If not, he is from Edmonton and likely would join the AJHL’s Sherwood Park Crusaders.

The Prince Albert Raiders have dealt C Andy Smith, 19, to the Chilliwack Bruins for G Matt Esposito, 19, and a 2010 fourth-round bantam draft pick. Smith, a sixth-round pick in the 2004 bantam draft, had nine points, including six goals, in 23 games with the Bruins. Esposito was the Bruins’ No. 1 goaltender through most of last season but lost his starter’s role to Marc Friesen near the end of the season. He didn’t show up for training camp, choosing to stay at home in Edmonton and ask for a trade.
