Sunday notes . . .

Vancouver C Evander Kane ran his season-opening point streak to 21 games with an empty-net goal Sunday as the Giants beat the visiting Portland Winter Hawks, 5-2. . . . The Giants are 17-1-0-3 and two points ahead of the Spokane Chiefs atop the Western Conference standings. . . . The Giants are at home to the Chilliwack Bruins on Wednesday. Kane’s streak is one game shy of the longest point streak of last season (LW Colton Yellow Horn of the Tri-City Americans put together a 22-game streak). . . . Kane was listed as questionable prior to the game. He is nursing a sore ankle after going hard into the boards Friday night.

The Bruins got 38 saves out of G Mark Friesen on Sunday and beat the Blazers 5-2 in Kamloops. Chilliwack got goals from five different players, including D Scott Ramsay, a sophomore, and freshman F Tanner Exner, both of whom scored their first WHL goals. C Kevin Sundher got his fifth of the season for the Bruins but the highly touted freshman has had his icetime cut. The last time the Bruins were in Kamloops — they lost 6-3 on Nov. 4 — he took three minors and looked awfully frustrated. Last night, he looked far more relaxed as he centred what might be the Bruins’ fourth line and also saw PP time.
“He’s still on the power play,” explained Bruins head coach Jim Hiller, adding that “we’ve cut his minutes way back. We’ve been able to do that with the acquisition of Andy Smith, who is much more mature and a much better fit for our first line.”
Smith, 19, was acquired last week from the Prince Albert Raiders.
“This is good for (Sundher) . . . this is really going to benefit him,” Hiller said. “He’s got to earn his minutes a little bit and figure out what this game is all about.”

The injury bug is in the process of taking a bite out of the Blazers. Already without C Mark Hall (knee, out for season), the Blazers have lost three veterans over the last few days. . . . RW Kenton Dulle (arm) went down during a practice last week and could be out for another two weeks. He has missed two games. . . . D Kurt Torbohm was a bit woozy after being on the receiving end of a hit late in the first period Saturday and didn’t return. He sat out Sunday’s loss to Chilliwack and will be re-evaluated Monday. . . . C Scott Wasden, the team captain, had his right arm in a sling after Sunday’s game. He, too, will be re-evaluated Monday.

F Carter Ashton enjoyed his first three-goal game in the WHL as the host Lethbridge Hurricanes dumped the Edmonton Oil Kings, 5-3. . . . The Hurricanes had lost six straight (0-5-0-1). . . . Ashton has 10 goals on the season. . . . C Colton Sceviour drew four assists for Lethbridge. . . . Edmonton head coach Steve Pleau was ejected in the second period — ch-ch-ch-ching! — for being too vociferous with the officials. . . . The Red Deer Rebels have sent D Kevin Woodyatt, 16, to a midget team in Arizona. Woodyat was the 128th pick in the 2007 bantam draft. He had been with the midget AAA Red Deer Optimist Rebels. . . . Red Deer C Landon Ferraro, 17, scored his 15th goal of the season as the Rebels lost 5-2 to the Tigers in Medicine Hat on Sunday. . . . In Saskatoon, the Blades, who trailed 4-0 by the time the game was nine minutes old, rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. G Mark Guggenberger turned aside 52 shots for the Broncos. . . . Freshman RW Burke Gallimore got the winner on the PP at 6:14 of the third period. . . . Another pane of glass was broken Sunday night at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon. This one fell apart during the warmup. It’s the 10th one to break since Sept. 2.
