Doug Gilmour has stepped down as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies in order to take over as head coach of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenaces. He replaces Larry Mavety, who stays on as general manager. This is big, big news in the east because Gilmour is from Kingston – he owns a home there and his folks live there. And, yes, Don Cherry is certain to talk it up on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. . . . The Frontenacs are 5-13-4-1 and in last place in the East Division. They also are playing in a new arena – the 5,700-seat K-Rock Centre. . . . Gilmour, whose jersey number will be retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 31, tried to purchase the Oshawa Generals over the summer. When that didn’t work out, he joined the Marlies’ coaching staff. . . . The Frontenacs’ next game is Friday in Belleville against the Bulls. . . . Last season, the Bulls began 2-9-1 and fired head coach Bruce Cassidy. Mavety replaced him and the team went 23-32-1 the rest of the way, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
