WARNING: Loser point rant on the way!
So . . . consider the weekend that was in the B.C. Division.
The Vancouver Giants went into the weekend with a 4-1-0-1 record. They were one point ahead of the Kamloops Blazers, who were 4-1-0-0.
And the teams were to play a home-and-home series, opening Friday in Kamloops and finishing Saturday in Vancouver.
Prior to Friday, there was talk of how, although the season is early, these were the proverbial four-point games.
So . . . the Blazers won the opener 2-1 in a shootout and the Giants won the second one, 5-4, in overtime.
And everyone went home with three points.
So . . . were they two-pointers or three-pointers or four-pointers or six-pointers?
And let’s shed a tear for the Kelowna Rockets. Because while Vancouver and Kamloops were divvying up six points from their two games, the Rockets were playing in a measly little two-pointer with the Chilliwack Bruins.
And then, of course, the Blazers lost 4-3 in OT to the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday. So add another loser point to Kamloops' total.
All of this is, of course, courtesy of the loser point, the worst — and most absurd — thing in sports today.
By the way, in the last 20 games between Vancouver and Kamloops, Vancouver is 11-5-0-4 and Kamloops is 9-9-2-0. Try explaining that to a 12-year-old hockey fan.
So . . . the Giants are six games over .500 in those 20 games. But the Blazers have a .500 record. And in the 20 games between the teams the WHL has doled out 46 points.
This is absolutely bizarre and it’s time someone made a decision to at least discuss alternatives.

The Prince George Cougars lost F Brett Connolly, the CHL’s reigning rookie of the year, with a recurring hip injury during their 9-2 loss to the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday. Connolly left the game in the second period and didn’t return. He was on crutches after the game. He later told the Prince George Citizen that it’s the same injury he first suffered while in Europe with Team Canada at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament in August. . . . The Cougars next play Friday in Kamloops.

The BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings have acquired D Tyler Miller, 18, who was released last week by the WHL’s Prince George Cougars. Miller, who is from Prince George, was acquired from the Merritt Centennials for future considerations. . . . Meanwhile, former Cougars D Jeff Regier, 18, is with the BCHL’s South Surrey Eagles. Regier, whom the Cougars acquired last season from the Everett Silvertips, had been at home in Abbotsford, B.C., waiting for the Cougars to trade him.

F Brock Balson, a third-round pick in the 2008 bantam draft, has been designated for assignment by the Prince Albert Raiders. He was pointless in two games with the Raiders. . . .
