Day 6 . . . third period

THIRD PERIOD:
The Stanley Cup is in the house today. I got to the rink shortly after 3 p.m., and, yes, the fans were lined up outside the Hockey Hall of Fame exhibition to get photos taken with the old mug. . . . The attraction and the hold that cup has on hockey fans in this country is absolutely amazing. . . . I was completely in awe of the number of people who showed up at the arena in Kamloops when Mark Recchi brought the Stanley Cup to town after winning it with the Carolina Hurricanes. . . . As the third period begins, the Wheat Kings and their fans have to be starting to wonder about what will happen on Friday. When this one is over, Brandon will have lost five straight to the Hitmen, who have outscored the Wheaties 11-2 over the lst five periods. . . . Neither team has changed goaltenders, so it’s still Brandon’s Jacob DeSerres against Calgary’s Martin Jones. . . . Brandon F Matt Calvert bumps Calgary D Matt MacKenzie after an icing whistle and I think we’ll see some of that this period. . . . There is Calgary F Justin Kirsch on a near breakaway in his first Memorial Cup game. Wonder how hard his heart was pumping? . . . Calgary F Jimmy Bubnick, who is playing like an all-star, sends in F Kris Foucault with a terrific pass but he can’t beat DeSerres for the hat trick goal. . . . Sportsnet apparently is reporting that F Scott Glennie isn’t on Brandon’s bench. . . . There’s a slash and Calgary F Cody Beach is in the penalty box. . . . There’s Jones with a big pad save off Brandon F Mike Ferland. . . . Jones with a glove on a backhander by F Mark Stone. . . . Jones has looked tonight like he’s on his game, but he also has been playing with a lead the whole time. . . . Calgary F Joel Broda takes a Giffen Nyren shot off an ankle and heads for the bench. . . . Just what Calgary needs with things going the way they are. . . . With Glennie gone, Mark Stone is on the wing with Brayden Schenn and Matt Calvert. . . . Not sure what happened to Glennie, though. . . . The 50/50 winner gets $13,523. . . . No, it’s not me. . . . Maybe Friday. . . . Attendance is 5,280. . . . Calgary D Michael Stone and Brandon D Travis Hamonic come together like a couple of bull elk, separate and then go to their benches. . . . There’s a scrap. Ferland wants to go with someone and D Ben Wilson and Beach drop their gloves. Ferland picks Beach and the crowd roars. No one left their seat, either. . . . Give Ferland the unanimous decision but it’s about Brandon’s only victory tonight. . . . Foucault is limping to the bench and getting help there. . . . Down goes a Wheat King and there’s a gathering in the corner. . . . Calgary F Rigby Burgart takes a major penalty and that’s interesting. The last thing Calgary wants is a suspension going into Friday’s game. . . . The Wheat Kings get a 5-on-3 for two minutes, with Nyren off for two and Burgart getting five. . . . And another Calgary penalty as D Matt MacKenzie goes for roughing. . . . The Calgary coaching staff isn’t going to be happy. The Hitmen were home and cooled out. Now they’ve got Foucault on the bench with a possible injury and Burgart in the room looking at a possible suspension. And the penalties just keep coming. . . . Calgary F Ian Schultz blocks a shot and he’s hurting. Then he races down the ice after a loose puck and forces Brandon D Travis Hamonic into a holding penalty. . . . And the fans are flooding to the exits. . . . This one is over. Calgary wins 5-1. . . . And what does Brandon do now? . . . The Wheat Kings won a fight or two and had a 40-30 edge in shots. And perhaps Scott Glennie is hurt. . . . Calgary owned this game, that’s for sure. And it looks like G Martin Jones is back on his game.
