Game 2 . . . first period

FIRST PERIOD:
The Moncton Wildcats have the edge early but Calgary Hitmen G Martin Jones looks up to the task. . . . Calgary has had two defencemen go off in the game’s first 6:30, both on the receiving end of clean checks. Moncton F Scott Brannon drilled Jaynen Rissling into the end boards in Calgary’s zone at 4:20. Two minutes later, it was Moncton F Gabriel Bourque hammering Zac Stebner into the boards just inside the Calgary line. Stebner went in back first and that one looked like it hurt. . . . Rissling skated off on his own, albeit a bit wobbly. Stebner needed some help before getting to his feet. . . . Calgary gets the first PP but doesn’t get much accomplished. D Giffen Nyren has one good chance for a shot, but it gets blocked. . . . F Brandon Kozun was on the ice with the first PP unit but wasn’t involved in the play. . . . Moncton gets on the board when Calgary D Ben Wilson dives to deflect a centring pass. The puck goes off his stick and past Jones. . . . Hard work by Moncton to keep the puck in the zone. The goal, which goes to F Devon MacAusland, comes at 9:53 and the shots are 4-0. . . . Now the shots are 6-0, plus two posts, for Moncton. And the scoreboard shows Calgary with a 1-0 lead. Must be a western conspiracy. . . . They changed the score during the TV timeout and that got something of a roar from the crowd. . . . Calgary F Joel Broda gets his side’s first shot from his off wing at 11:28 and G Nicola Riopel waffleboards it away. . . . Waffleboards. I’ve always wanted to write that, Doc Emrick. . . . Neither Rissling nor Stebner has returned, leaving Calgary to go with four defencemen. Wilson is playing with Matt Mackenzie, while Nyren is with Michael Stone. . . . Youngster from Souris, which is just south of here, is on the scoreboard during a TV timeout Subway promotion. He gets a rise from the crowd when he is asked who he wants to win the Cup and he replies: “Spitfires.” . . . Stebner returns with 5:17 to play. He’s paired with Nyren. . . . No sign of Rissling. . . . That’s it for one period. . . . Moncton leads 1-0 and holds a 13-3 edge in shots. Jones has been Calgary's best player. He made a stupendous leg save while on the ice late in the period. . . . Moncton won the puck possession game by a wide margin. Calgary is going to have to be better in the faceoff circles, especially in its defensive zone, if it hopes to win.
