The Kootenay Ice is in the market for a head coach.
Sources have told me that Mark Holick, the Ice’s head coach since August 2007, has signed on with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks and will coach their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse, N.Y., Crunch.
An announcement from Anaheim GM Bob Murray is pending.
Apparently, Holick informed Ice owner/GM Jeff Chynoweth of the impending move following Sunday’s Memorial Cup game.
The Ducks didn’t have an AHL affiliate this season after things didn’t work out the previous season with the Iowa Chops.
The Syracuse franchise had been affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets, who surrendered that agreement after this season.
Holick was signed with the Ice through 2010-11.
Holick replaced Cory Clouston, who left to take over as head coach of the AHL’s Binghamton Senators and now is head coach of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.
Former Ice assistant coach Brad Lauer is on Clouston’s staff in Ottawa, while Ryan McGill, a former Ice head coach, is an assistant with the Calgary Flames.
That’s a pretty good recent track record for the Ice, which won 43 games this season and has 19 players eligible to return.
There now are three head-coaching vacancies in the WHL. The Edmonton Oil Kings have yet to replace Steve Pleau, while the Spokane Chiefs are looking to replace Hardy Sauter.
