Friday . . .

There was a bit of a WHL flavour to the KHL draft that was held Friday.
D David Musil of the Vancouver Giants was the 12th overall selection, taken by SKA St. Petersburg.
That was the third of three consecutive first-round selections by St. Petersburg.
D Radko Gudas of the Everett Silvertips was selected 40th overall by Spartak Moscow, which also took F Roman Horak of the Chilliwack Bruins with the 63rd pick.
F Nino Niederreiter of the Portland Winterhawks was taken by Avangard Omsk with the 90th pick, while Red Deer Rebels F Andrew Kudrna went to Spartak with the next selection.
D Rissanen Rasmus of Finland went 159th, to Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
I’m sure there are other familiar names in the draft list that can be found right here.

Here is a list of WHL players who were 2008 NHL draft picks but didn`t sign, so are eligible for the NHL draft later this month and could end up becoming free agents:

G Morgan Clark (Swift Current Broncos), Vancouver Canucks, 191st.
D Matt Delahey (Chilliwack Bruins), New Jersey Devils, 112th.
G Jacob DeSerres (Brandon Wheat Kings), Philadelphia Flyers, 84th.
D Eric Mestery (Tri-City Americans), Washington Capitals, 57th.

Broda, Delahey, Spurgeon and Tassone played as 20-year-olds in 2009-10 so have used up their major junior eligibility.

Former WHL commissioner Dev Dley was sworn in as a B.C. Supreme Court justice on Friday in Kamloops. Dley had been appointed to the Supreme Court on March 19, after serving as a judge of the Provincial Court of B.C.

The Spokane Chiefs aren’t anywhere close to signing a new head coach. So sayeth GM Tim Speltz. Dave Trimmer of the Spokane Spokesman-Review has that story right here.

Doug Hedley has signed on with the AJHL’s Alberta Grizzlys as director of hockey operations and head coach. He is fresh off serving as the event co-ordinator of the 2010 Royal Bank Cup tournament that was held in his hometown of Dauphin, Man. He also has 17 years of coaching experience in the MJHL and SJHL, most recently with the MJHL’s OCN Blizzard. He replaces Kevin Hasselberg who resigned following the 2009-10 season.
