Marty Johnston is the new hockey coach at Carleton University in Ottawa, reports Martin Cleary of the Ottawa Citizen. Johnston, who has been an assistant coach there for three years, signed a four-year contract. He replaces Fred Parker, who had been the head coach since 2007 when the Ravens returned to hockey after a 33-year absence.

Reading between the lines of an Edmonton Journal story written by Jim Matheson, it would seem that Bob Green, the GM of the Oil Kings, has offered the head-coaching job to Perry Pearn and now is awaiting a response. That story is right here.

A while ago a friend loaned me a movie that has nothing to do with hockey. But if you’re of the Muhammad Ali generation, you don’t want to miss Facing Ali. It’s a 100-minute documentary fashioned on the book of the same title that was written by Globe and Mail sports columnist Stephen Brunt. The book was good; the move is a whole lot better. Watching the clips of Ali in action, he comes to life again and you remember just how great -- and what a yapper -- he truly was. It’s also revealing to listen to the likes of Sir Henry Cooper, Leon Spinks, George Foreman, Ken Norton, who has made a remarkable recovery from a devastating auto accident, Ron Lyle, Ernie Terrell, Earnie Shavers et all. The stars, however, are Joe Frazier and George Chuvalo. Chuvalo, the former Canadian heavyweight champion, is remarkably well-spoken and the portion where he reflects on his trials and tribulations away from the ring about makes time stand still. . . . This is great stuff. I am told that this documentary was on CBC-TV at least once. If it’s on again, don’t miss it. If it isn’t, hunt it down. You’ll be glad that you did.
