Jarry, Oil Kings put clamps on Wheat Kings

AHLThe Abbotsford Heat, the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames, have signed F Coda Gordon of he Swift Current Broncos. He was a sixth-round selection by the Flames in the 2012 NHL draft. . . . Gordon, who will turn 20 on Aug. 4, had 71 points, including 26 goals, in 59 games with the Broncos this season.

In Edmonton, G Tristan Jarry earned his second shutout in as many games as the Oil Kings beat the Brandon Wheat Kings, 3-0. . . . Jarry stopped 29 shots for his second career playoff shutout. On Thursday, he turned aside 15 shots as Edmonton beat visiting Brandon, 5-0. . . . The Oil Kings take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven second-round series into Game 3 in Brandon on Tuesday. . . . Jarry hasn't allowed a goal in a playoff franchise-record 156:46, going back to the second period of Game 4 of a first-round sweep of the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . Edmonton D Ashton Sautner got the winner, scoring on the PP at 5:49 of the first period. . . . F Edgars Kulda scored the game's other two goals, at 16:06 of the first and 16:25 of the third, and also had an assist. . . . F Brett Pollock had two assists. . . . In Medicine Hat, D Rinat Valiev broke a 2-2 tie at 13:08 of the third period as the Kootenay Ice beat the Tigers 4-2 in Game 1 of a second-round series. . . . They'll play again tonight in Medicine Hat. . . . The Ice trailed 2-1 in the second period when F Jon Martin scored his first goal at 8:33. . . . The tie held up until Valiev got his first playoff goal. . . . Ice D Jagger Dirk added an empty-netter at 19:22 of the third. . . . F Jaedon Descheneau and F Sam Reinhart of the Ice, who lead the WHL with 17 points in these players, were held pointless. . . . F Trevor Cox scored his fourth goal for the Tigers, while F Cole Sanford got his third. . . . Ice G Mackenzie Skapski stopped 28 shots, 11 fewer than Medicine Hat's Marek Langhamer. . . . The Tigers were 1-for-3 on the PP; the Ice was 0-for-7. . . . There was a multi-fight situation at 19:49 of the third period that resulted in 64 of the game's 90 penalty minutes. . . . In Portland, the Winterhawks scored the game's last four goals and beat the Victoria Royals, 6-3. . . . The Winterhawks take a 2-0 lead to Victoria where Game 3 is scheduled for Monday night. . . . Victoria F Steven Hodges gave his side a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the game, and second of the playoffs, at 7:36 of the second period. . . . Portland then struck for two PP goals, just 1:37 apart, with D Derrick Pouliot scoring at 10:08 and F Oliver Bjorkstrand counting at 11:45. . . . Bjorkstrand added his second goal of the game, and WHL-leading eighth of the playoffs, at 1:40 of the third and Pouliot iced it at 15:21 with his fourth goal. . . . Bjorkstrand and Pouliot added an assist each, as the Winterhawks ran their winning streak to 13 games. They have won an amazing 34 of their last 35 games. . . . Portland F Brendan Leipsic had three assists and F Taylor Leier and F Chase De Leo each had two. . . . Hodges added an assist to his two goals, with D Travis Brown getting to assists. . . . In Kelowna, the Rockets broke a 2-2 tie with three second-period goals as they beat the Seattle Thunderbirds, 6-3. . . . The Rockets lead the second-round series 2-0 with Game 3 scheduled for Kent, Wash., on Tuesday. . . . Kelowna D Damon Severson, who had four points in Game 1, broke the tie on the PP at 3:12 of the second and F Cole Linaker gave his guys a two-goal lead at 4:46. F Rourke Chartier got his fifth goal at 14:01. . . . Severson and F Nick Merkley each had a goal and two assists for Kelowna, which got two assists from D Madison Bowey and F Carter Rigby. . . . Seattle F Scott Eansor, who scored three times in 52 regular-season, got his fourth goal in his seventh game of these playoffs. . . . Kelowna G Jordon Cooke turned aside 36 shots, while Seattle's Taran Kozun stopped 24. . . . Cooke was especially sharp in the first period when the visitors held an 18-7 edge in shots. "Without Jordan, we’re down not just by one or two goals, but probably three or four goals in the first,” Kelowna head coach Ryan Huska told Doyle Potenteau of The Okanagan Sunday. "(Seattle) came out very hard and they played very well in the first. Jordon was ready, and that’s why you rely on your goaltender; he was there for us. I found we got our legs (going) a little bit in the second and third periods, and we played a much smarter second half of the game than we did in the first.” . . . Kelowna was 1-for-3 on the PP; Seattle was 0-for-2. . . . The Rockets continued to play without F Myles Bell, their regular-season scoring leader, who has a leg injury. . . . Seattle was without F Jaimen Yakubowski, who suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 1 on Thursday.

Winterhawks, Ice's Reinhart keep streaks alive


Greg Gatto (Brandon, Spokane, Prince Albert, Regina, Portland, 1990-92) is the new head coach of the NAHL’s Odessa Jackalopes, at least for the final 10 games of this season. Gatto, who was fired earlier this month as the head coach of the U of Lethbridge Pronghorns, replcaes Matt Cressman, who was dismissed Thursday. Cressman had been in his first sesaon as head coach, but his 13th with the Jackalopes. . . . Gatto was an assistant coach with the Jackalopes in 2003-04. He also played for the Jackalopes in 2002-03 when he and Cressman were teammates.

D Griffin Reinhart, the captain of the Edmonton Oil Kings, hopes to play this afternoon against the visiting Calgary Hitmen. Reinhart missed six games in February because of the flu, but he’s hoping he’s well enough to play today. . . . The Oil Kings and Hitmen are tied for first place in the Eastern Conference, each with 91 points. The Oil Kings have 10 games remaining; the Hitmen have eight to play.

The Regina Pats have added F Sam Steel to their roster for the remainder of this season. Steel, the second overall selection in the 2013 WHL bantam draft, spent the season with the midget AAA Sherwood Park, Alta., J. Ennis Kings. Their season ended earlier this week, freeing him up to join the Pats. . . . The Pats will use Steel, too, as they have been hit by injuries and illness. He played last night as the Pats beat the visiting Swift Current Broncos 4-3 in a shootout. . . . Regina was again without F Boston Leier and F Dryden Hunt, both of whom have concussions. F Morgan Klimchuk and D Dmitry Sinitsyn, both of whom missed a game this week due to illness, were back.

AJHLF Tanner MacMaster of the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks had signed a letter of intent to attend Boston College and play for the Eagles. However, it seems he has changed his mind and now has committed to Quinnipiac, which is in Hamden, Conn., where he will play for the Bobcats. . . . The Spokane Chiefs selected MacMaster with the 19th overall pick of the 2011 bantam draft. This season, with the Kodiaks, MacMaster, who turned 18 on Jan. 8, has 40 points, including 11 goals, in 47 games. Last season, he finished with 48 points, 24 of them goals, in 56 games. . . . Tanner is the younger brother of Nathan MacMaster (Moose Jaw, Calgary, Tri-City, 2007-12).

Lethbridge F Taylor Cooper scored his 12th goal, seven of which have come against the Warriors. . . . The Hurricanes have lost eight in a row. . . . Neither the Warriors (17-38-9) nor Hurricanes (12-49-5) will appear in the playoffs. . . .

In Regina, F Connor Gay’s second goal of the game, at 4:13 of OT, gave the Pats a 4-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. . . . Gay has 15 goals this season. . . . The Broncos scored twice in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the second period. . . . Gay tied the score at 3:29 of the third, with F Patrick D’Amico giving the Pats their first lead, with his sixth goal, at 6:03. . . . In Prince George, D Travis Brown scored at 15:09 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and help the Victoria Royals a 5-3 victory over the Cougars. . . . Brown, who came over from the Moose Jaw Warriors in January, has 13 goals this season. . . . The Royals led 2-0 in the second period and 3-1 in the third, only to have the Cougars tie it on goals 13 seconds apart from F Zach Pochiro, his 27th, and F Todd Fiddler, his 44th. . . . Fiddler, who scored twice, now is riding a 17-game point streak. . . . The Royals are 9-1-1 in their last 11. . . . In fact, four of the Giants’ final eight games are scheduled to be against the Rockets. . . . Cooke has three shutouts this season and eight in his career. . . . F Nick Merkley, a 16-year-old from Calgary, scored twice, giving him 20 goals. He’s got 49 points in 58 games. . . . D Damon Severson drew three assists,. . . . The Rockets scored four times in the third period. . . . Kelowna (51-9-4) leads the overall standings. . . . The Giants (30-25-10) are seventh in the Western Conference, three points behind the Everett Silvertips. . . .

In Spokane, G Corbin Boes stopped 30 shots and the Portland Winterhawks ran their winning streak to 21 games as they beat the Chiefs, 2-0. . . . This was Boes’ first shutout of the season and the third of his career. It was his first blank job since Oct. 1, 2011, when he was with the Brandon Wheat Kings. . . . With Brendan Burke recovering from mononucleosis, Boes made his eighth straight start. Boes is 12-0-1 since being acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in January. . . . The Winterhawks have a chance to tie the WHL record for consecutive victories in one season when they meet the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent, Wash., tonight. That record is held by the 1967-68 Estevan Bruins. . . . The Winterhawks have eight games remaining, four of them against Seattle. . . . Portland is 22-0-1 in its last 23 games. . . . The Winterhawks swept the Chiefs 8-0-0 this season, shutting them out in each of the last three meetings; in fact, Portland has won 16 straight games, regular-season and playoffs, from the Chiefs. . . . This is their 11th season in the WHL. . . . F Carson Stadnyk, with his 18th, and F Jujhar Khaira, with his 15th, gave the Silvertips a 2-0 first-period lead. . . . Everett had a 16-3 edge in shots in the first period. . . . F Manraj Hayer, with his 14th, upped that to 3-0 at 1:19 of the third. . . . EIHL-UKF Ned Lukacevic (Spokane, Swift Current, 2001-06) has signed with the Fife Flyers (England, UK Elite). This season, he has played with three teams — he had seven points, including two goals, in 10 games with the Tohoku Free Blades Hachinohe (Japan, Asia HL); he was pointless in one game with the Bakersfield Condors; and he had two goals in nine games with the Reading Royals (ECHL).

Blazers end losing skid

A tip of the cap to the WHL for posting details of the Portland-Red Deer trade from Tuesday. . . . In that exchange the Winterhawks acquired D Mathew Dumba from the Rebels for F Presten Kopeck. Four conditional bantam draft picks were involved. . . . Should Dumba end up in Portland after the World Junior Championship, the Rebels will get second-round bantam picks in 2014, 2015 and 2016. There are conditions on the 2016 selection that could turn it into a third-round pick, all depending on when Dumba would be returned. . . . If Dumba doesn’t go to Portland, the Rebels cough up a third-rounder in 2014, meaning the deal would become Kopeck for that selection.

The Saskatoon Blades have brought in D Nolan Reid from the midget AAA Notre Dame Argos. Reid, a 15-year-old from Deer Valley, Sask., was the Blades’ first pick, 41st overall, in the 2013 bantam draft. He has 19 points in 23 games with the Argos. . . . Reid is expected to practise with the Blades today and could play Friday and Saturday against the visiting Regina Pats and Kamloops Blazers. . . . The Blades have lost D David Nemecek to the Czech Republic’s national junior team’s selection camp.

McKenzie was an eighth-round pick in the 2013 draft. From Sherwood Park, Alta., McKenzie is playing with the midget AAA Sherwood Park Kings. . . . Greer, who is from Edmonton, was taken in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. He is playing for the South Side Athletic Club midget AAA team in Edmonton. . . . Veloso, from Winnipeg, plays for the midget AAA Winnipeg Wild.

The Victoria Royals have acquired F Braden Oleksyn, 17, from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for F Landon Welykholowa, 17. . . . Oleksyn, from Saskatoon, was pointless in seven games with the Hitmen this season. A third-round bantam draft pick by the Hitmen in 2011, he had 28 points, including 11 goals, in 50 games with the SJHL's La Ronge Ice Wolves last season. . . . Welykholowa, who is from Calgary, had one goal in 18 games with Victoria. He was a third-round pick by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2011 bantam draft. Last season, he played 34 games the midget AAA Calgary Buffaloes, putting up 26 points, including 12 goals.
