Source: Barzal in isolation . . . Hitmen control playoff spot . . . Winterhawks shock Silvertips



With the WHL playoffs almost upon us, you can bet that those teams headed for the post-season are sweating bullets as they wait and wonder if they will hear from Mr. Mumps.
While the Victoria Royals wait to find out whether mumps has been riding along on their team bus, a source in the Seattle area told Taking Note on Sunday that “indications are that (Mathew) Barzal has the mumps. He’s in isolation as a precautionary measure but signs point to mumps.”
Barzal, arguably the WHL’s best forward, took the warmup prior to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday night, but then left for the dressing room and didn’t return. He was said to be experiencing flu-like symptoms. Barzal wasn’t in the lineup on Saturday as the Thunderbirds dumped the Winterhawks in Portland, 6-3.
Barzal has 79 points, including a career-high 69 assists, in 41 games. He began the season with the New York Islanders, who selected him in the first round of the NHL’s 2015 draft.
It seems feasible that any WHL coaches or players who don’t feel well from now through season’s end will be tested for mumps.
The Royals isolated head coach Dave Lowry and one player prior to a 6-2 loss to the Blazers in Kamloops on Friday. It now seems that there are at least two players involved. The Victoria Times Colonist has reported that D Ralph Jarratt and D Mitchell Prowse both have experienced flu-like symptoms, have undergone testing for mumps, and have been isolated.
The Royals, who next play Tuesday when they are to meet the Vancouver Giants in Langley, B.C., are awaiting test results on all three.
“It takes a couple of days and we’re still waiting to hear,” Royals general manager Cam Hope told the Times Colonist. “We’re still crossing our fingers and hoping it isn’t that and that it’s just the flu.”
The Giants lost 4-3 in Kamloops on Saturday. Vancouver chose not to use the new visitors’ dressing room, the same one that had been occupied by the Royals from Wednesday through Friday night. Instead, the Giants operated out of what had been the visitors’ room prior to this season. A new dressing room was built to facilitate the 2016 IIHF World Women’s Championship that was held in Kamloops a year ago.
Prior to this weekend, it was believed the mumps outbreak had been contained in the Eastern Conferece with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Medicine Hat Tigers and Swift Current Broncos having had issues.
The NHL’s Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks also have had players diagnosed with the mumps in the past two or three weeks.

With the WHL playoffs almost upon us, the Seattle Thunderbirds chose not to take any chances with G Rylan Toth on Saturday night. In a game against the Winterhawks in Portland, Toth stopped all 11 shots he faced in the opening period, but didn’t return for the second period. Originally, I reported that Toth left because of illness. That appears to have been in error. I have since been told that Toth has a “lower-body issue” and that his removal was simply a precaution. The Thunderbirds will be careful with this because he’s their horse and they need him if they are to make a deep run into the spring. Toth leads the WHL in victories — he is 36-18-3 — and is fifth in GAA (2.75) and has a .902 save percentage. . . . On Saturday, G Matt Berlin played the last two periods for Seattle, as the Thunderbirds skated to a 6-3 victory. . . . Seattle, which leads the U.S. Division by one point over the Everett Silvertips, next is scheduled to play Wednesday in Spokane against the Chiefs.

D Nolan Orzeck, a Calgarian, has signed with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice. A fourth-round selection in the WHL’s 2016 bantam draft, Orzeck announced via Twitter that he had signed. Orzeck, who turned 16 on Feb. 20, played this season with the midget AAA Calgary Northstars, putting up five goals and six assists in 30 games.

F Alex DeBrincat of the OHL’s Erie Otters had his 19-game goal-scoring streak end on Sunday in a 7-0 victory over the host Peterborough Petes. DeBrincat does hold a share of the OHL record for consecutive games with a goal. That record had been held by F Mike Ricci, who did it with the Petes in 1988-89. . . . DeBrincat, who is still riding a 24-game point streak, has 62 goals and 60 assists in 60 games. He leads the OHL scoring race by 18 points over line mate Taylor Raddysh.

A game in the Norwegian League playoffs on Sunday was decided in the eighth overtime period when Joakim Jensen scored to give the host Storhamar Dragons a 2-1 victory over the Sparta Warriors. . . . The Dragons lead the best-of-seven quarterfinal series, 3-2. . . . The game, which lasted 217 minutes 14 seconds, ended at 2:32 a.m. . . .
The longest game in WHL history lasted 136 minutes 56 seconds, with the Kootenay Ice beating the visiting Kamloops Blazers, 3-2, on March 25, 2003. F Colin Sinclair scored the winner in the fourth OT period. It was Game 3 of a first-round playoff series.
The longest game in NHL history was played on March 24, 1936. It ended at 16:30 of the sixth OT as F Mud Bruneteau scored to give the Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Maroons in Game 1 of a 1936 Stanley Cup first-round game.

Thibodeau gets AJHL record . . . Winterhawks, Thunderbirds on fire . . . Halbgewachs ends drought

F Brett Bulmer (Kelowna, 2008-12) has been released by mutual agreement by Ilves Tampere (Finland, Liiga). He had two goals and three assists in 23 games.

Gord Thibodeau recorded his 833rd coaching victory on Friday, moving to the top of the AJHL’s career list. Thibodeau’s Whitecourt Wolverines scored a 2-1 OT victory over the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons to give him the record. Thibodeau spent 11 seasons (2003-13) as the Oil Barons’ GM and head coach. . . . In his first season with Whitecourt, he also has coached the Lloydminster Blazers, St. Albrert Saints and Lloydminster Bobcats. . . . Thibodeau, who is in his 23rd season as an AJHL head coach, had been tied with Don Phelps, who coached the Calgary Canucks from 1979-2011. . . . Whitecourt’s winning goal came from F Eric Krienke, with the lone assist to F Mitch Lipon, both of them former WHL players.

The Battlefords Stars of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League have made a coaching change, with Norm Johnston replacing Jean Fauchon for the remainder of this season. . . . After losing 9-1 to the Mintos in Prince Albert on Thursday, the Stars were 14-21-2 and tied for 10th place, one point out of a playoff spot. . . . Fauchon was in his first season as head coach of the Stars after spending four seasons with them as an assistant coach. . . . Johnston, a school teacher by profession, hasn’t coached since 2013-14 when he was with the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians. He was the general manager and head coach of the SJHL’s North Battleford North Stars for five seasons (1983-86, 1988-90). . . . He spent 1994-95 as head coach of the WHL’s Regina Pats. . . . He will be behind the bench today (Saturday) as the Stars play host to the Yorkton Maulers.

Paddock cracking whip in Regina . . . Tigers' defence hurting . . . Seattle on five-game roll


F Zdeněk Bahenský (Saskatoon, 2004-06) has been released from a tryout contract with Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic, Extraliga) that was signed on Jan. 10. He didn’t appear in a game for Mladá Boleslav. This season, he had two goals and nine assists in 22 games with Nové Zámky (Slovakia, Extraliga) when he was released on Dec. 31. . . . 
F Chris St. Jacques (Medicine Hat, 1999-2004) has been released by Duisburg (Germany, Oberliga). He had nine goals and 21 assists in 23 games.

 John Paddock, the general manager and head coach of the Regina Pats, had seen enough. Although it was riding high atop the CHL rankings, Paddock knew that the ship was leaking. 
That was before Friday evening, when the Pats jumped out to 4-0 and 5-1 first-period leads over the Tri-City Americans, before watching it all fall apart as the visitors stormed back for a 6-5 victory.
Paddock, tired of undisciplined play and bad penalties, reacted Saturday by scratching D Connor Hobbs and F Filip Ahl before a game against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.
How’d that work?
Well, the Raiders scored the game’s first four goals, all in the first period, at which point the Pats had been outscored 9-0 over a stretch of 61 minutes 27 seconds and all on home ice.
On Saturday, it took two goals from F Adam Brooks, one with nine seconds left to play in regulation time and the other in OT, to give Regina a 7-6 victory.
The Pats travelled to Prince Albert for a Sunday game, giving Paddock lots of time to ponder what has been happening. He put Ahl and Hobbs back into the lineup, but took out F Austin Wagner and the Pats responded with a 5-1 victory. Hobbs responded to his benching with two goals and an assist.
The Pats, who have been the No. 1 team in the CHL rankings, likely will lose their spot this week because of their performance in those two home games. It will be interesting to see how they respond.
They have some time to practise before entertaining the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and visiting the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.

The Medicine Hat Tigers don’t play again until Wednesday when they visit the Saskatoon Blades.
Already without D David Quenneville, who hasn’t played since Jan. 3 when he suffered a broken fibula
while blocking a shot, they now have lost D Ty Schultz. He left in the first period of Friday’s 7-3 victory over the visiting Swift Current Broncos. Yes, he ended up with a broken fibula after blocking a shot.
When he was injured, Quenneville, an 18-year-old from Edmonton, had 48 points, 20 of them goals, in 38 games.
Schultz, a 19-year-old from New Westminster, B.C., was having a career season offensively, with 21 points, 18 of them assists, in 44 games when he went down. He has equalled his career high in goals (3) and surpassed the 14 assists he recorded in 2014-15.
If things really do come in threes, that should be it for the Tigers and broken  feet from blocked shots. Last season, the Tigers lost F Steve Owre on Dec. 1 when he ended up with a broken ankle after being hit by a Quenneville shot. Owre, who had 24 points in 24 games when he was injured, didn’t play again until Jan. 25. He finished with 52 points, including 20 goals, in 55 games.
With Quenneville and Schultz out and the WHL trade deadline having passed us by, what happens with Medicine Hat now?
Well, the Tigers’ acquisition of D Jordan Henderson, 19, from the Saskatoon Blades on Jan. 5 for a fifth-round pick in the 2017 bantam draft looms large. Henderson’s experience will be key to helping the Tigers through this rough spot.
As well, veteran Clayton Kirichenko, 20, will no doubt be asked to shoulder more of the load. He already is having a banner season, with career highs in assists (32) and points (37).
Latvian freshman Kristians Rubins, who turned 19 on Dec. 11, is also sure to be asked for more. He’s 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, and was with Latvia at the World Junior Championship, so wanting more from him shouldn’t be much of a reach.
Quenneville isn’t expected back for at least a month, and Schultz, depending on what the X-rays showed, could be gone at least that long.
Really, though, there’s no reason for panic in The Hat. After all, the Tigers are 30-13-1 and leading the Central Division by six points over the Lethbridge Hurricanes and 14 over the third-place Red Deer Rebels.
For a while, at least, the Tigers will be playing with house money.
