Thibodeau gets AJHL record . . . Winterhawks, Thunderbirds on fire . . . Halbgewachs ends drought

F Brett Bulmer (Kelowna, 2008-12) has been released by mutual agreement by Ilves Tampere (Finland, Liiga). He had two goals and three assists in 23 games.

Gord Thibodeau recorded his 833rd coaching victory on Friday, moving to the top of the AJHL’s career list. Thibodeau’s Whitecourt Wolverines scored a 2-1 OT victory over the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons to give him the record. Thibodeau spent 11 seasons (2003-13) as the Oil Barons’ GM and head coach. . . . In his first season with Whitecourt, he also has coached the Lloydminster Blazers, St. Albrert Saints and Lloydminster Bobcats. . . . Thibodeau, who is in his 23rd season as an AJHL head coach, had been tied with Don Phelps, who coached the Calgary Canucks from 1979-2011. . . . Whitecourt’s winning goal came from F Eric Krienke, with the lone assist to F Mitch Lipon, both of them former WHL players.

The Battlefords Stars of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League have made a coaching change, with Norm Johnston replacing Jean Fauchon for the remainder of this season. . . . After losing 9-1 to the Mintos in Prince Albert on Thursday, the Stars were 14-21-2 and tied for 10th place, one point out of a playoff spot. . . . Fauchon was in his first season as head coach of the Stars after spending four seasons with them as an assistant coach. . . . Johnston, a school teacher by profession, hasn’t coached since 2013-14 when he was with the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians. He was the general manager and head coach of the SJHL’s North Battleford North Stars for five seasons (1983-86, 1988-90). . . . He spent 1994-95 as head coach of the WHL’s Regina Pats. . . . He will be behind the bench today (Saturday) as the Stars play host to the Yorkton Maulers.

F Colton Yellow Horn (Lethbridge, Tri-City, 2003-08) has signed a one-year contract with Orli Znojmo (Czech Republic, Erste Bank Liga). He was released by Plzeň (Czech Republic, Extraliga) on Saturday at his request. He had four goals in 11 games with Plzeň. . . .
F Roberts Lipsbergs (Seattle, 2012-15) has signed a one-year contract with Dinamo Riga (Latvia, KHL). Last season, he was pointless in two games with the Adirondack Thunder (ECHL), had nine goals and seven assists in 37 games with the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL), and put up two goals and four assists in nine games with the Tulsa Oilers (ECHL). . . .
F Brad Cole (Seattle, Kootenay, Saskatoon, 2003-07) has signed a contract through Nov. 20 with Ritten/Renon (Italy, Serie A). Last season, he had six goals and 22 assists in 39 games with Ritten/Renon. The new contract is just for the third round of the IIHF Continental Cup that is scheduled for Nov. 18-20 in Ritten.

It is looking more and more as though F Mathew Barzal will be returning to the Seattle Thunderbirds from the NHL’s New York Islanders. The 16th overall selection in the NHL’s 2015 draft, Barzal, 19, has played in only one of the Islanders’ first five games. The Islanders seem convinced that Barzal is unable to play on either wing, while F Anthony Beauvillier, 19, who was the 28th pick in that 2015 draft, has moved from centre to left wing and has a goal and four assists in five games. . . . Beauvillier, from the QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes, has played in the Islanders’ past four games, while Barzal has watched from on high. . . . On Monday, Arthur Staple of Newsday wrote: “Shane Prince is due to come off injured reserve soon, so that may prompt a decision on Barzal. But it seems that Beauvillier is here to stay and play, so long as he continues to do the work.”

F Tyler Coulter of the Brandon Wheat Kings has been suspended for two games for a hit from behind on F Giorgio Estephan of the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night. Coulter sat out Saturday’s game against the Spokane Chiefs and won’t play tonight (Tuesday) in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. . . . D Joe Gatenby of the Kamloops Blazers will miss tonight’s game against the visiting Victoria Royals as he serves a one-game suspension for a high hit on D Juuso Valimaki of the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night.

Chris Schlenker, a former WHL player and referee, made his NHL debut on Monday night as he worked the game in Montreal between the Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. . . . Schlenker, 32, was the WHL’s official of the year for last season. The Medicine Hat native played four seasons (2001-05) in the WHL, splitting time with the Regina Pats (187 games) and Prince Albert Raiders (97). . . .
F Rodrigo Abols, a 20-year-old Latvian who was waived through the WHL, will join the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan. He had 49 points, including 20 goals, in 62 games with the Winterhawks last season, but lost is roster spot this season when the team chose to go with two younger import players. . . .
F Cal Babych, who was released earlier this month by the Vancouver Giants, has joined the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express. Babych, 19, was pointless in three games with the Giants. He put up two goals and an assist in his first three games with Chilliwack.

Shawn Martin has been fired as the general manager and head coach of the SJHL’s La Ronge Ice Wolves. He had been there since June 4, 2013. . . . The Ice Wolves are 2-12-1 and in last place in the four-team Sherwood Division, seven points behind the Melfort Mustangs. . . . Assistant coaches Eric Bell and Rob Wilson will handle the team while a search for a replacement is conducted. . . . Martin, 39, is from Wainwright, Alta. . . . Before joining the Ice Wolves, Martin had worked with three AJHL teams — the Grande Prairie Storm, St. Albert Steel and Sherwood Park Crusaders. . . . After Martin was relieved of his duties, Mat Hehr, the assistant general manager and associate coach, announced his resignation. Hehr was in his second season with La Ronge.

F Milan Jurik (Prince Albert, 2006-07) has signed a one-year extension with Mulhouse (France, Division 1). This season, in 23 games, he had nine goals and 12 assists. . . .
F Michal Pšurný (Medicine Hat, Kootenay, 2005-06) has signed a one-year contract with Mulhouse (France, Division 1). This season, with the Manchester Phoenix (England, Premier), he had 19 goals and 34 assists in 41 games.

In Brandon, F Tyler Coulter scored 51 seconds into OT to give the Wheat Kings a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen. . . . The Wheat Kings won the opener, 9-4, on Friday. The teams now head for Calgary and games Tuesday and Wednesday nights. . . . Brandon scored nine times on 41 shots in Game 1; last night, it scored three times on 46 shots as Calgary G Brendan Burke was stellar. . . . Coulter, who is from Brandon, tipped in a point shot from D Ryan Pilon for the winner, his fourth goal of these playoffs. . . . Coulter told Rob Henderson, the sports editor of the Brandon Sun, that the goal pretty much came in
self-defence. The puck, Coulter said, “actually hit the shaft of my stick going in. I thought it was coming for my face, so I put (the stick) up to guard it and it just hit me and went in.” . . . The Hitmen now are 4-3 in OT in these playoffs. Seven OT games in one playoff year ties the franchise record from 2013 when they were 5-2. . . . Brandon is 4-0, with each winning score having been 3-2. . . . Calgary D Michael Zipp forced OT with his first playoff goal, at 6:51 of the third period. . . . For the second night in a row, Calgary erased a two-goal deficit. . . . Brandon F Jayce Hawryluk, who opened the scoring early in Game 1, got last night’s first goal at 3:49 of the first period. For whatever reason, there was recent speculation that Mike Johnston, the former GM and head coach of the Portland Winterhawks, was on the hot seat as his first season as head coach of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins wound down. Well, Pittsburgh was eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the New York Rangers on Friday night, and the Penguins quickly gave Johnston a vote of confidence. . . . The U.S. beat Canada 7-2 in one semifinal game at the IIHF U-18 World championship in Zug, Switzerland, on Saturday. . . . Canada, which finished third a year ago, will play Switzerland for bronze today, while the U.S. will meet Finland in the championship game. . . . F Auston Matthews, whose WHL rights belong to the Everett Silvertips, had two goals for the U.S. Boston University F Jack Eichel, who is expected to be the second overall selection in the NHL’s 2015 draft in June, had 10 points, including five goals, in seven games at this tournament last season. Matthews has 14 points, eight of them goals, in six games this time around.

The Telus Cup, for Canada’s midget AAA championship, will be decided today when the Grenadiers de Châteauguay meet the Toronto Young Nationals in the final in Riviere-du-Loup, Que. . . . Interestingly, the Grenadiers’ head coach is Steve Hartley, the son of Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley, who is busy with the Stanley Cup playoffs these days. Steve is in his first season with the Grendadiers. He was an assistant coach with the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads when they won the 2013 Memorial Cup. . . . F Owen Sillinger of the Regina Pat Canadians, who lost out in a semifinal, was the tournament’s leading scorer, top forward and MVP. He is the son of former NHLer/WHLer Mike Sillinger.

Almost two years have gone by since Jordan Chartier of Saskatoon, who had yet to see his 24th birthday, jumped out of a speeding vehicle and died. Chartier’s family, along with friends, including Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, are helping a mental-health program called the Neural Health Project that has been launched in Saskatoon. . . . As such, he suffered numerous concussions. . . . “At no time in my NHL career did anyone — a doctor, trainer, coach or league representative — ever tell me that I could be at risk for seizures or other long-term neurological diseases and disorders such as dementia or Alzheimer’s,” he writes in Saturday’s Globe and Mail. “I loved playing hockey, but wish someone had sat us all down to have an honest conversation about how our brains would feel years into the future.” . . .
