Chiefs, Pats swing deal . . . Raiders make another trade . . . Malm shoots Giants to victory

———
WHL trades since Dec. 27:
Trades: 8.
Players: 14.
Bantam draft picks: 7.
Conditional bantam draft picks: 1.
(WHL trade deadline is Jan. 10).
——
The reunion of long-time friends Rykr Cole and Dawson Davidson lasted about a week.
It ended Monday when the Regina Pats dealt Cole to the Spokane Chiefs.
RYKR COLE
RILEY WOODS
Cole and Davidson both are from Moosomin, Sask. They were reunited on Dec. 25 when Davidson found out that the Kamloops Blazers had traded him to the Pats.
“He’s my best friend, pretty much,” Davidson told Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post after the trade. “We’re both from Moosomin. We played midget together in Moose Jaw and roomed together for a year. I saw him a lot over the break. When I got traded, I instantly called him.
“It’s going to be fun to reunite. He’s a great guy and an unbelievable leader. I’m looking forward to playing with him again.”
Cole told Harder: “He let me know he got traded to Regina and I was pretty excited. He came over and
WYATT SLOBOSHAN
we talked about it. I’ve been showing him around Regina a bit. It’s nice to have a guy coming in that you know, especially with Dawson being one of my really good buddies.”
While Cole and Davidson were enjoying the reunion, F Wyatt Sloboshan was choosing not to return to the Spokane Chiefs after the Christmas break.
On Tuesday, the Chiefs dealt Sloboshan, 19, who had been acquired from the Saskatoon Blades, and a third-round selection in the 2017 bantam draft to the Pats for Cole, a 19-year-old forward, and F Riley Woods, 18.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Sloboshan, from Vanscoy, Sask., has played 30 games this season, 29 of them with Saskatoon. He had four goals and 12 assists with the Blades — he was the team’s captain — and was pointless in one game with Spokane. In 146 career games, he has 91 points, including 33 goals. He was a third-round pick by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2012 bantam draft.
Cole, from Moosomin, Sask., was a third-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft. The 6-foot-0, 185-pounder had six goals and seven assists in 34 games this season. He put up 27 goals and 30 assists in 166 career games.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Woods, a list player from Regina, had six goals and seven assists in 28 games with the Pats this season. In 59 career games, he has 15 goals and 12 assists.
——
The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired F Curtis Miske, 19, from the Spokane Chiefs for a fourth-round pick in the 2018 WHL bantam draft. . . . The Chiefs, having acquired F Rykr Cole and F Riley Woods earlier in the day from Regina, had to make a move to get their roster down to 25 players. . . . Miske, from Beaumont, Alta., had five goals and nine assists in 28 games this season. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder played in 154 regular-season games with the Chiefs, scoring 22 goals and adding 36 assists. The Chiefs had selected him in the second round of the 2012 bantam draft. . . . This was the 13th trade made by the Raiders this season.
——
The Medicine Hat Tigers, having acquired G Michael Bullion, 19, from the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday, have dropped G Duncan McGovern, 16, from their roster. He will join the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings. . . . The Tigers picked up Bullion as veteran support behind starter Nick Schneider, who leads the WHL with 25 victories. . . . With the Tigers, McGovern, who is from Winnipeg, was 2-4-0, 4.06, .858. McGovern was a fifth-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft.
——
F Taylor Sanheim, a former WHL player, now is with the BCHL’s Penticton Vees. They acquired Sanheim, 20, from the MJHL’s Portage Terriers on Monday, with F Ty Barnstable, 18, going the other way. . . . Sanheim had 12 goals and 39 assists in 132 career regular-season games with the Calgary Hitmen. This season, he had two goals and five assists in 18 games with the Hitmen when he was released.
——
The Moose Jaw Warriors will be without D Dmitri Zaitsev when they meet the Raiders in Prince Albert tonight (Tuesday). He has been suspended for one game “for game misconduct” during a 2-1 OT loss to the visiting Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

MONDAY’S GAME:

At Calgary, F James Malm scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give the Vancouver Giants a 5-4
JAMES MALM
victory over the Hitmen. . . . The Giants erased a 4-2 third-period deficit to force OT. . . . D Dylan Plouffe (4) got the visitors to within a goal at 4:44, with D Matt Barberis tying it with his seventh goal, at 18:49. . . . The Giants grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals from F Ty Ronning (14), at 5:17, and F Tyler Benson (11), at 6:06. . . . Calgary appeared to take control by scoring the game’s next four goals. . . . F Jakob Stukel (12) got the Hitmen started at 9:09 of the second period. . . . F Matteo Gennaro followed that with two goals, his 13th and 14th, at 16:48, on a PP, and 50 seconds into the third period. . . . F Beck Malenstyn’s 16th goal gave Calgary a 4-2 lead at 2:46 of the third. . . . Benson also had one assist. . . . Gennaro and Stukel each had two assists, while Malenstyn added one. . . . Vancouver got 34 stops from G David Tendeck. . . . Calgary G Kyle Dumba made 36 saves. . . . Calgary was 1-4 on the PP; Vancouver was 0-4. . . . The Giants (15-20-3) had lost their previous two games. . . . The Hitmen (14-17-5) have points in three straight (1-0-2). . . . F Evan Patrician, a 15-year-old from Calgary, made his WHL debut with the Giants, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2016 bantam draft. He plays for the midget AAA Calgary Flames. . . . Announced attendance: 7,026.

Some Scattershooting . . . Chiefs' forward doesn't return . . . Silvertips add defenceman

Scattershoot

Scattershooting on a Monday night, with the snow having been shovelled and the turkey devoured . . .

The WHL was kind enough to shut down for eight days for the Christmas break. The teams will start paying the price for that tonight, though. Each of the 22 teams will play three games over the next four nights. Yes, there are 11 games scheduled for each of Tuesday, Wednedsay and Friday nights.
——
There are eight teams who return from the break to play four games in five nights. The Brandon Wheat Kings, Kamloops Blazers, Moose Jaw Warriors, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thunderbirds, Spokane Chiefs, Tri-City Americans and Victoria Royals are scheduled to play tonight, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
——
Gee, do you think such scheduling has ever prompted anyone to think about starting a union or a players’ association on behalf of major junior players?
——
The best part of Day 1 of the World Junior Championship? The work of Dennis Beyak and Craig Button who handled two games — Sweden’s 6-1 victory over Denmark and Czech Republic’s 2-1 triumph over defending-champion Finland — out of Montreal. They know the players and their stories; they stayed on point and out of each others way through both games.
——
Canada opens with a 5-3 victory over Russia at the World Junior Championship and the all-seeing and all-knowing experts dump all over the winning goaltender. Has it been like this through all 40 years of this event?
——
Just when you think you’ve seen some bad TV commercials, along comes Nike with a real mess. And, of course, they will beat us over the head with it. That one had to have snuck on the air without high-ranking approval. No?
——
Geoffrey Brandow, who tweets at @GeoffreyBrandow, notes that the last five WHL championship teams “were within top three of goal-differential at Christmas.” The three previous champions were fifth. . . . The top five WHL teams in goal-differential are the Regina Pats, Medicine Hat Tigers, Everett Silvertips, Prince George Cougars and Kamloops Blazers.
——
Brandow points out that the top five are a combined plus-238, while the remaining 17 teams are a combined minus-238.
——
The WHL’s Christmas trade embargo has ended. The trade deadline arrives on Jan. 10.
——
The Kamloops Blazers’ braintrust has an interesting situation on its hands. F Matt Revel, 20, could miss up to two months with an undisclosed injury suffered on the pre-Christmas Central Division tour. Do the Blazers go out and find another 20-year-old before Jan. 10, or do they wait, and hope, for Revel’s return?
——
The Blazers (21-13-2) are third in the B.C. Division, two points behind the Kelowna Rockets (22-12-2). These two meet tonight in Kelowna and Wednesday in Kamloops. Might this be a first-round playoff preview? The Rockets are eight points behind the division-leading Prince George Cougars; the Blazers are six points head of the Victoria Royals
———
D Kirill Vorobyov (Portland, 2012-13) was traded by Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod to CSKA Moscow for monetary compensation and was then traded by CSKA Moscow to Sibir Novosibirsk (all Russia, KHL) for monetary compensation. In 35 games, he had three goals and four assists with Nizhny Novgorod. . . .
F Brendan Shinnimin (Tri-City, 2007-12) has signed a contract for the rest of this season with Barys Astana (Kazakhstan, KHL). Shinnimin was released by mutual agreement by Langnau (Switzerland, NL A) on Dec. 21. He had two goals and seven assists in 12 games there. . . .
-———
It appears that F Wyatt Sloboshan has decided not to return to the Spokane Chiefs following the WHL’s
WYATT SLOBOSHAN
eight-day Christmas break.
“He has chosen to not come to Spokane after Christmas and we are looking at options,” Scott Carter, the Chiefs’ general manager, told Taking Note on Monday night.
The Chiefs are expected to wait until there is no doubt that Sloboshan won’t be returning, meaning that he didn’t make his post-Christmas flight or catch a later one, before issuing a news release.
Sloboshan, a 19-year-old from Vanscoy, Sask., was acquired by the Chiefs from the Saskatoon Blades on Dec. 14. In that deal, the Chiefs landed Sloboshan, D Nolan Reid, 18, and a third-round pick in the 2017 WHL bantam draft for F Markson Bechtold, 20, D Evan Fiala, 19, and a conditional sixth-round pick in an undisclosed draft.
Sloboshan, who had been the Blades’ captain, played one game with the Chiefs — he was pointless — before the Christmas break. In 30 games with the Blades, he had four goals and 12 assists.
In 146 career regular-season games, Sloboshan has 33 goals and 58 assists. He was a third-round selection of the Swift Current Broncos in the 2012 bantam draft.
——

Here’s a look at the 23 WHL players who are playing at the World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto:
Brandon (1): D Kale Clague (Canada).
Calgary (1): D Jake Bean (Canada).
Everett (2): G Carter Hart (Canada), D Noah Juulsen (Canada).
Kamloops (3): F Rudolfs Balcers (Latvia), F G Connor Ingram (Canada), D Ondrej Vala (Czech Republic).
Kelowna (3): F Dillon Dube (Canada), F Calvin Thurkauf (Switzerland), F Tomas Soustal (Czech Republic).
Medicine Hat (1): D Kristians Rubins (Latvia).
Portland (2): F Joachim Blichfeld (Denmark), D Caleb Jones (U.S.).
Prince Albert (1): F Simon Stransky (Czech Republic).
Red Deer (3): F Adam Musil (Czech Republic), G Lasse Petersen (Denmark), F Michael Spacek (Czech Republic).
Regina (2): F Filip Ahl (Sweden), D Sergey Zborovskiy (Russia).
Seattle (2): F Mathew Barzal (Canada), F Alexander True (Denmark).
Tri-City (1): D Juuso Valimaki (Finland).
Vancouver (1): F Radovan Bondra (Slovakia).
——
The Saskatoon Blades should have D Libor Hajek back in their lineup as they return to action by going home-and-home with the Prince Albert Raiders. Hakej, a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL’s 2016 draft, was released by Czech Republic’s national junior team before the World Junior Championship got started. . . . Hajek has a goal and 11 assists in 31 games with Saskatoon this season. . . . The Blades and Raiders are in Prince Albert tonight and Saskatoon on Wednesday night.
——
The Everett Silvertips have added D Gianni Fairbrother, 16, to their roster, bringing him in from the Vancouver Northwest Giants of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Fairbrother, a fourth-round selection in the 2015 bantam draft, was pointless in one game earlier this season. He also played three playoff games last spring. He has seven assists in 18 games with the Giants. . . . The Silvertips are without D Noah Juulsen, who is with Team Canada at the World Junior Championship. Adding Fairbrother leaves Everett with seven defencemen.

Blades, Chiefs swap four . . . Seven WHLers on Team Canada . . . Sideroff deadly in OT

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TAKING NOTE

Today we have a true WHL flavour to our musical opening. It’s Michael Bublé, who owns a chunk of the Vancouver Giants, and Mariah Carey, with All I Want For Christmas Is You, and it's right here.
——
It’s your lucky day, because right here is another Christmas video. If you haven’t heard this song, give it a listen. It’s a catchy one from Chris Rea, who is . . . Driving Home for Christmas.
——
The Edmonton Oil Kings always have a grand time with their Christmas video. Their latest one is no exception, and it’s right here.
———
F J.T. Barnett (Vancouver, Everett, Kelowna, 2008-13) has been traded by CSKA Moscow to Amur Khabarovsk (both Russia, KHL) for "monetary considerations.” Barnett was pointless in one game with CSKA and had seven goals and three assists in 24 games with Zvezda Chekhov (Russia, Vysshaya Liga). . . .
D Filip Novák (Regina, 1999-2002) has been released by Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia, KHL). He had three assists in 11 games. Earlier this season, he had a goal and two assists in nine games with Pardubice (Czech Republic, Extraliga).
-———
The Saskatoon Blades have acquired F Markson Bechtold, 20, D Evan Fiala, 19, and a conditional sixth-round WHL bantam draft selection in an undisclosed year from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for F and Wyatt Sloboshan, 19, D Nolan Reid, 18, and a third-round pick in the 2017 bantam draft. (At a guess, the
conditional pick will be in 2018 and it will hinge on whether Fiala plays as a 20-year-old in 2017-18.)
The trade was announced after the Blades were beaten, 3-2 in OT, by the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday night.
The acquisition of Bechtold left the Blades with four 20-year-olds, one over the maximum, so they have placed F Kolten Olynek on waivers. The Blades had acquired Olynek on waivers from the Prince Albert Raiders earlier in the season.
The Blades now have Bechtold, F Jesse Shynkaruk and D Bryton Sayers as their 20-year-olds.
It would appear that the Blades (13-18-3) were wanting to shake things up in their dressing room. That doesn’t mean anything untoward has been happening, just that management is looking for a different mix.
The Blades have picked it up a bit of late — they are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games — as they go into two important weekend games. They are one point out of the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot that is held by the defending-champion Brandon Wheat Kings (13-14-4). The teams meet Friday in Brandon and Saturday in Saskatoon.
Bechtold, from Strathmore, Alta., has five goals and three assists in 13 games this season. He has three goals and an assist in five games since returning from an undisclosed injury. A third-round pick by the Chiefs in the 2011 bantam draft, Bechtold has 93 points, 35 of them goals, in 211 regular-season games.
Fiala, from Clavet, Sask., has two goals and seven assists in 32 games this season. The Chiefs selected him in the first round of the 2012 bantam draft. In 157 regular-season games, he has eight goals and 32 assists.
Bechtold and Fiala are expected to join the Blades on Friday in time for the game in Brandon.
Sloboshan, the Blades’ captain, is from Vanscoy, Sask. He was a third-round pick by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2012 bantam draft. This season, he has four goals and 12 assists in 30 games. In 145 career games, all with Saskatoon, he has 91 points, including 33 goals.
Reid, from Deer Valley, Sask., was a second-round selection by the Blades in the 2013 bantam draft. Last season, he had four goals and 22 assists in 72 games. This season, he has 11 assists in 34 games. In 161 career games, all with the Blades, he has 48 points, seven of them goals.
Sloboshan, who hasn't played since Dec. 6 because of an undisclosed injury, and Reid are expected in Spokane before the Chiefs meet the visiting Prince George Cougars on Saturday.
Like the Blades, the Chiefs are chasing a playoff spot. At 14-12-6, they are one point out of the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot and five points short of third place in the U.S. Division.
Getting the 2017 third-round draft pick was important for the Chiefs as they traded a conditional third-rounder to the Red Deer Rebels, along with G Tyson Verhelst, who has since retired, for G Dawson Weatherill and a conditional fifth-rounder in 2018.
——
After beating Czech Republic 8-0 in an exhibition game on Wednesday night in Boisbriand, Que., the Canadian national junior team made its last cuts.
Released were G Michael McNiven of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack, F Sam Steel of the Regina Pats, F Zach Senyshyn of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, D Guillaume Brisebois of the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders and D Samuel Girard of the QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes.
McNiven’s release means that Team Canada will go with two WHL goaltenders — Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips is expected to go into the pre-World Junior Championship games as the starter, with Connor Ingram of the Kamloops Blazers backing him up.
Last night, Ingram stopped six shots and McNiven 11 in the victory over Czech Republic.
Other WHLers on the 22-player roster are F Mathew Barzal (Seattle Thunderbirds), F Dillon Dube (Kelowna Rockets), D Jake Bean (Calgary Hitmen), D Kale Clague (Brandon Wheat Kings) and D Noah Juulsen (Everett).
The roster features seven players from each of the WHL and QMJHL, with six from the OHL and two from the NCAA. The two NCAA skaters are D Dante Fabbro (Boston U), whose WHL rights belong to the Seattle Thunderbirds) and F Tyson Jost (North Dakota), whose WHL rights were acquired by Regina from Everett earlier this season.
Team Canada will move today from Boisbriand to Mont-Tremblant, Que., where it will prepare for exhibition games against Finland (Montreal, Dec. 19), Czech Republic (Ottawa, Dec. 21) and Switzerland (Toronto, Dec. 23).
The 2017 World Junior Championship opens Dec. 26 in Toronto and Montreal.
There is more on the Canadian roster right here.

——
At Lethbridge, F Deven Sideroff scored in OT to give the Kamloops Blazers a 3-2 victory over the
DEVEN SIDEROFF
Hurricanes. . . . Sideroff also scored in OT on Tuesday night as the Blazers won, 4-3, over the Rebels in Red Deer. . . . The Blazers now are 3-0-1 on a six-game jaunt through the Central Division. They are 2-0-1 in their last three games, each of which has been decided in OT. . . . Sideroff, who scored twice in Lethbridge, now has 21 goals. He leads the WHL with seven game-winners, four of them in his last seven games. Four of his winners have come in extra time. . . . The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead on goals from F Brett Davis (2), at 5:42 of the first period, and F Egor Babenko (10), on a PP, at 19:22 of the second period. . . . The Blazers tied it on third-period goals from F Travis Walton (2), at 7:48, and Sideroff, at 15:08. . . . Babenko also had an assist. . . . G Dylan Ferguson stopped 25 shots for the winners. With starter Connor Ingram with Canada’s national junior team, Ferguson has made four straight starts. In those games, he is 3-0-1, 2.15, .932. . . . The Hurricanes got 26 stops from Stuart Skinner. . . . Lethbridge was 1-4 on the PP; Kamloops was 0-4. . . . Kamloops (20-12-2), which was playing its fourth game in five nights, has points in seven straight (6-0-1). . . . Lethbridge (18-11-5) has points in 13 in a row (11-0-2). . . . The Hurricanes had won their previous five games, and had won six in a row on home ice. . . . Announced attendance: 2,871.
——
At Moose Jaw, F Jayden Halbgewachs continued to torch opposing teams, this time scoring a goal and
JAYDEN HALBGEWACHS
adding two assists as the Warriors beat the Prince Albert Raiders, 4-1. . . . Halbgewachs, 19, leads the WHL with 28 goals and is tied for the scoring lead, with 50 points, in 31 games. He has scored at least once in each of his past 10 games. The WHL record for longest goal-scoring streak is 18 games and is held by F Cliff Ronning, who did it with the New Westminster Bruins in 1984-85. Halbgewachs went into this season with single-season career highs of 15 goals and 41 points, both set in 69 games last season. . . . Last night, Halbgewachs scored the game’s first goal, at 16:01 of the second period. He drew an assist on F Noah Gregor’s 17th goal, on a PP, at 19:12. . . . Raiders D Loch Morrison was serving a slashing minor when Gregor scored. “I thought it was a weak call,” Prince Albert associate coach Dave Manson told Jeff D’Andrea of paNow.com. “It was something that was going on all night and they let it go for the first period and a half and they for some reason, they decided to call it there. It was a terrible call but those things happen. We have to kill that penalty in order to stay in it. They got one off of it and that put the nail in the coffin for us.” . . . F Tanner Jeannot (10) made it 3-0 at 1:28 of the third period and D Josh Brook added his fourth at 17:01, with Halbgewachs drawing his second assist. . . . Brook and Gregor also had an assist apiece, while F Nikita Popugaev had two of them. . . . Moose Jaw F Brayden Burke had an assist to run his point streak to 10 games. . . . Warriors G Zach Sawchenko stopped 29 shots, losing his shutout bid when F Austin Glover (11) scored at 17:37 of the third period. . . . G Ian Scott stopped 42 shots for Prince Albert. . . . Moose Jaw was 1-4 on the PP; Prince Albert was 0-6. . . . The Warriors were without D Matt Sozanski for a sixth straight game, while F Tristin Langan missed his third in a row. . . . Warriors F Brett Howden, released Tuesday by the Canadian national junior team, was back in the lineup and had an assist. . . . Prince Albert was without D Vojtech Budik and F Simon Stransky, both of whom played for the Czech Republic’s national junior team in an 8-0 loss to Canada in an exhibition game in Boisbriand, Que., on Wednesday. . . . Moose Jaw improved to 19-7-5. . . . The Raiders (7-24-2) are 1-1-1 in their last three games. . . . Announced attendance: 2,726.
——
At Prince George, D Brendan Guhle snapped a 3-3 tie at 16:31 of the second period and the Cougars
TY EDMONDS
went on to beat the Tri-City Americans, 5-3. . . . One night earlier, the Cougars had beaten the Americans, 4-1. . . . The doubleheader sweep allowed the Cougars (24-8-2), who have won three in a row, to move back into first place in the overall standings. They are one point ahead of the Everett Silvertips (22-4-5), who hold three games in hand, and two ahead of the Regina pats (21-2-6), who have played five fewer games. . . . Last night, the Cougars jumped out front 2-0 when F Brad Morrison (14) and F Jared Bethune (11) scored 39 seconds apart midway through the first period. . . . The visitors tied it on goals from F Morgan Geekie (18), at 17:57, and F Michael Rasmussen (23), at 0:19 of the second period. . . . F Brogan O’Brien’s fifth goal, at 2:00 of the second, put the Cougars back into the lead, but Tri-City F Jordan Topping tied it with his third goal, at 13:26. . . . Guhle broke that deadlock, and F Kody McDonald added insurance with his eighth goal, on a PP, at 5:08 of the third period. . . . The Cougars got two assists from F Colby McAuley, while O’Brien, Guhle, McDonald and Bethune added one each. . . . Geekie and Topping had an assist each for Tri-City. . . . G Ty Edmonds stopped 22 shots for the Cougars, as he won for the 19th time this season. . . . The Americans got 32 saves from G Rylan Parenteau. . . . The Cougars were 1-7 on the PP; the Americans were 0-4. . . . The Americans (19-13-3) have lost two in a row. . . . Announced attendance: 2,855.
——
At Saskatoon, F Davis Koch scored his second goal of the game 11 seconds into OT to give the
DAVIS KOCH
Edmonton Oil Kings a 3-2 victory over the Blades. . . . The Oil Kings overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit before winning it on Koch’s ninth goal of the season. . . . Portland selected him in the eighth round of the 2015 bantam draft. . . . The Winterhawks, who had lost 5-1 in Victoria one night earlier, took a 2-0 lead on goals from D Connor MacEachern, his first, at 4:32 of the first period and F Skyler McKenzie, his 21st, at 8:28. . . . Four WHL contenders at this point . . . Check out DUBNetwork . . . Blades facing big week

Scattershoot

Some thoughts and some questions as we scattershoot on a Monday . . .

1. The real WHL season begins in about a month. That’s when players have returned from international tournaments and the nervousness and uncertainties caused by the approach of the Jan. 10 trade deadline are gone. Right now, the contenders, in alphabetical order, are the Everett Silvertips, Medicine Hat Tigers, Prince George Cougars and Regina Pats. It remains to be seen if any of the pretenders can make moves between now and Jan. 10 that will help close the gap.

2. Will the WHL’s 2016-17 Media Guide be available for download before Santa Claus downloads himself through your chimney?

3. Is it time to have the Teddy Bear Toss somehow morph into something that puts more cash into the hands of non-profits? I keep hearing that our food banks, which you may recall were to have been a temporary measure, are under increased strain as they struggle to keep up with demand. Could the money spent on thousands upon thousands of stuffed toys not stock a lot of food bank shelves, especially when there are food bank workers out there who say they can turn a $1 donation into $5 worth of food? Just sayin’ . . .

4. Is there a neater bunch of people in Kamloops than the Harley Owners Group? Some of us, including Santa and kidney foundation folks, gathered at Barnes Harley-Davidson on Iron Mask Road a couple of Saturdays ago and six local groups were presented with more than $5,000 in cheques that will help with annual endeavours. You should know that there was ham on the buffet table but the only hogs I saw were on the display floor.

5. Isn’t it great to see a player like Jayden Halbgewachs of the Moose Jaw Warriors explode offensively in his 19-year-old season. Halbgewachs, in his third season, has paid his dues and it’s great to see him having this success. ICYMI, he has goals in nine straight games and leads the WHL with 27 scores.

6. If you’re a WHL follower and haven’t checked out DUBNetwork, you really should. A year ago, the gang — well, it was a two-man gang, at best — at dubnetwork,ca was making its way as a stats-based site. Today, it’s that and a whole lot more. If you haven’t already, take a minute out of your day and check it out. If you do, I guarantee that you’ll go back again and again and again and . . . They’re also looking for a marketing/social media manager. If you’re interested, visit the website for particulars.

7. If you go by winning percentage, 15 of the WHL’s 22 teams are at .500 or better. If you go by wins and losses, the number is 11. That’s what happens when some games are worth three points and others just two.

8. So far, the WHL has handed out 77 loser points, and that’s 77 too many. It also means that the Vancouver Giants, Kootenay Ice and Prince Albert Raiders will be hard-pressed to make a playoff charge, while the Calgary Hitmen really are on the bubble.

9. That sound you hear is Vancouver general manager Glen Hanlon’s phone ringing and ringing and ringing. Yes, the vultures will be circling for the next four weeks.

10. Every November/December, as we put up Christmas lights and decorations, I wonder: Does anyone have more spare mini-lights than I do?

11. Cam Cole. Ian Hamilton. Scott Cruickshank. Scott Fisher. George Johnson. Kirk Penton. Lowell Ullrich. Brad Ziemer. Elliott Pap. Greg Douglas. If you’re a sports fan and a reader in Western Canada, those sports writers — and I’m sure I’ve missed some — no longer are plying their trade. More will be exiting stage left before the snow is gone. I don’t know what Postmedia’s end game is but it really is cutting back on the number of reasons sports fans should purchase newspapers.

12. Has there ever been a better head coach-athlete combination than Bill Belichick and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots?

13. If you think you’re having a bad today, just spare a moment to think about that bettor.

In case you haven’t noticed, the push is on for Christmas. We’re close enough to the big day that you need to sharpen your elbows and eat half a loaf of garlic toast with some Caesar salad before going shopping,
Here, at Taking Note, we begin our countdown with Band Aid from 1984. Right here is . . . Do They Know It’s Christmas?
——
For more of the Christmas spirit, there is a message right here from the Tri-City Americans.
——
SAM STEEL
F Sam Steel of the Regina Pats scored twice on Monday night as a team of Canadian national junior team hopefuls beat the U Sports All-Stars, 5-3, in an exhibition game played in Broisbriand, Que. . . . Team Canada jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead and upped that to 4-0 early in the second period. The Canadian university all-stars cut the deficit to one before Team Canada iced it. . . . G Connor Ingram of the Kamloops Blazers went the distance for the university side, stopping 24 shots. . . . G Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips started for Team Canada, and was perfect on 10 shots in 30:39. Michael McNiven of the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack relieved Hart and gave up three goals on 13 shots. . . . The teams will play again today (Tuesday) at 1 p.m. ET. . . . There is speculation that the Team Canada staff might make some cuts after the game.
——

The Red Deer Rebels are scheduled to play host to the Kamloops Blazers tonight (Tuesday). The Rebels will do it without F Adam Musil and F Michael Spacek, both of whom are in Montreal at the Czech Republic national junior team’s selection camp. . . . Red Deer also will be without F Grayson Pawlenchuk, who suffered an undisclosed injury in Friday’s 3-2 OT loss to the Hitmen in Calgary. Brent Sutter, the Rebels’ GM/head coach, has said Pawlenchuk will be out at least six weeks, and there is speculation that the injury might be season-ending. Pawlenchuk, 19, has four goals and five assists in 19 games. . . . As well, Red Deer F Jeff de Wit is questionable with an undisclosed injury.
The Blazers will be without G Connor Ingram, who is in the Canadian national junior team’s selection camp; D Ondrej Valaj, who is with the Czech Republic team in Montreal; and F Matt Revel, who suffered an undisclosed injury in a 3-2 victory over the Oil Kings in Edmonton on Saturday.
——
The Saskatoon Blades have to be feeling pretty good about themselves as they prepare for three rather important games before they start their Christmas break. . . . On Saturday night, the Blades went into Regina and beat the Pats, 2-1, in OT. That was the first time this season that the high-flying Pats had been held to fewer than two goals in a game. . . . One night later, the Blades dumped the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors, 5-3. . . . This has the Blades back in the Eastern Conference playoff conversation as they are only two points behind the Edmonton Oil Kings and Brandon Wheat Kings, who hold down the two wild-card spots. . . . The Oil Kings are in Saskatoon on Wednesday night. The Blades then go home-and-home with the Wheat Kings, playing in Brandon on Friday and in Saskatoon on Saturday. . . . The Blades will be without D Libor Hájek, who is in Montreal at the Czech Republic junior team’s selection camp. . . . However, the Blades may get F Wyatt Sloboshan, their captain, back on Wednesday. He has missed three games with an undisclosed injury.
——
There are a couple of midweek doubleheaders on tap with the Tri-City Americans in Prince George to play the Cougars tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday. . . . On those same nights, the Portland Winterhawks will be playing the Royals in Victoria. . . . F Vladimir Bobylev, 19, is expected to be in the Royals’ lineup after returning to the team from a stint in his native Russia. Bobylev had 67 points, including 28 goals, in 72 games with the Royals last season. He signed with Spartak Moscow of the KHL over the summer — his surname became Bobylyov — but had only a goal and two assists in 20 games there. He was sent to a VHL-affiliate, Khimik Voskresensk, where he had a goal and an assist in three games. This could be a huge move for the Royals who, if Bobylev produces, will have added a top-six forward without losing anything off their roster.
