Saturday . . .

Big news out of the QMJHL on Saturday as two goaltenders scored goals. No, not own goals. One came on a deflection, while the other was a shot. . . . Here is the QMJHL’s press release, in its entirety:
"BOUCHERVILLE, Saturday, December 6, 2008 -- Peter Delmas of the Lewiston MAINEiacs and Maxim Gougeon of the Rimouski Océanic put their names in the record books tonight as both goaltenders managed to record goals.
"Peter Delmas was credited with a goal at 3:56 of the second period after he deflected the puck into an empty net after a delayed penalty call.
"Maxim Gougeon recorded his goal by shooting the puck from his own crease into an open net at 17:52 of the third frame.
"Before tonight's games, the only goaltender in QMJHL history to score a goal had been Antoine Lafleur, then of the P.E.I Rocket (September 2005)."

SATURDAY IN THE WHL:
The Tri-City Americans got 35 saves from G Chet Pickard as they beat the visiting Calgary Hitmen, 4-1, in Kennewick, Wash. . . . F Taylor Procyshen, F Adam Hughesman and F Kruise Reddick each had a goal and two assists for the Americans. . . . D Jarrett Toll and D Brett Plouffe never managed a point but each was plus-4, as were Prochyshen and Reddick. Hughesman was plus-3. . . . It was Teddy Bear Night and C Mitch Fadden scored the goal for the Americans, just 58 seconds in the game. Tri-City has seven victories and a tie – yes, a tie – in its home Teddy Bear games. . . . The Americans have won eight in a row and lead the U.S. Division by seven points over the Spokane Chiefs and are three points behind the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Giants. . . . Vancouver visits the Toyota Center in Kennewick on Dec. 13. . . . The Prince George Cougars made it two OT victories in a row over the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night, beating the visitors 4-3 on D Cameron Cepek’s fifth goal of the season at 3:14 of extra time. D Dallas Jackson had tied the game for the Cougars at 17:12 of the third period. . . . The Cougars had won 6-5 in OT on Friday night. . . . Attendance continues to be a struggle in Prince George, with the crowd announced at 2,111 on Saturday, one night after the attendance was announced at 1,923. . . . Everett has lost five times in OT this season. . . In Portland, Calvin Pickard, Chet’s younger brother, stopped 34 shots as the Thunderbirds beat the Winter Hawks, 3-1. F Luke Walker scored the Teddy Bear goal at 18:08 of the third period in front of 7050 fans to get the home side to within 2-1. But Seattle put it away with an empty-netter by F Greg Scott. . . .

The Saskatoon Blades’ run at a WHL record ended in Vancouver. The Blades had won 12 straight road games, six shy of the record held by the Calgary Hitmen (1999-2000). Saskatoon’s amazing streak was halted by a 5-1 loss to the Giants in front of 9,905 fans on Teddy Bear Night. The Giants scored two PP goals and another shorthanded. . . . The Giants got goals from five players – is that their game, or what? – with all-world D Jon Blum getting his 10th of the season and F Evander Kane notching his 18th. . . . Vancouver C James Wright finished up wearing a full facemask after taking a stick in the face from teammate Lance Bouma. Wright took seven stitches before returning. . . . The Blades were without two 20-year-olds – F Mike Reich (hand) and D Colin Joe (concussion). . . . LW Adam Chorneyko scored for the Blades. Chorneyko had flown to Calgary earlier in the day to attend the memorial mass for former WHL G Michael Maniago. The two played together last season in Lethbridge. After scoring, Chorneyko pointed to the sky in a salute to Maniago. . . .

In Red Deer, the Rebels beat the Kamloops Blazers 3-2 on F Carter Smith’s third-period goal that broke a 2-2 tie. The Rebels scratched F Landon Ferraro, who leads them in goals and points, with a foot injury after he blocked a shot in a 5-0 loss in Lethbridge on Friday. He took the pregame warmup Saturday but couldn’t go and is listed as day-to-day. The Rebels are home to the Regina Pats on Sunday. . . . Red Deer had F Tomas Polak (concussion) and D Luke Egener (knee) back in the lineup after lengthy absences. . . . In Spokane, the Chiefs scored five times on 12 first-period shots and went on to beat the Kootenay Ice, 6-2. LW Drayson Bowman had two goals for the Chiefs in the opening 20 minutes and now has 14 on the season. Bowman also set up three goals for his third career five-point game. He now has 32 points in 27 games. . . . Bowman had a shot at the hat trick but was stopped by G Nathan Lieuwen on a second-period penalty shot. . . . The Ice had Kai Thompson, a goaltender from the Cranbrook midget ranks, backing up Lieuwen. That was necessitated because of the departure of G Thomas Heemskerk, 18, who left the team and returned to his home in Chilliwack, saying his heart no longer is in the game. . . . It was Teddy Bear Night and Spokane C Mitch Wahl, with his 16th of the season, got the game’s first goal at 3:52 of the first period. D Mike Reddington, who scored last season’s Teddy Bear goal for the Chiefs, is out with a groin injury.

F Scott Glennie picked up four points as the host Brandon Wheat Kings dropped the Medicine Hat Tigers, 5-1. Glennie had two goals and two assists, while linemate Brayden Schenn had a goal and two helpers. Glennie has 17 goals; Schenn has 15. The Wheat Kings scored five straight goals after LW Travis Dunstall opened the scoring for the Tigers. . . . LW Del Cowan was on the line with Glennie and Schenn, in place of the injured Matt Calvert. . . . Glennie now is riding an 11-game point streak. . . . Brandon had C Jesse Hall (knee) in the lineup for the first time since Oct. 31. . . . In Prince Albert, F Justin Bernhardt and F Ryan Harrison had two goals each to lead the Raiders to an 8-3 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Bernhard also had two assists, while F Ryan McDonald had a goal and three helpers. Bernhard, McDonald and D Jordan Rowley, who had one assist, each was plus-3. . . . The Warriors have lost seven in a row and have fallen into last place in the overall standings. . .

D Mitch Versteeg scored 29 seconds into the game and later added two assists to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-3 victory over the host Edmonton Oil Kings. . . . Earlier in the day, the Hurricanes attended a memorial mass for former teammate Michael Maniago, 20, in Calgary. Maniago, who was one of Lethbridge’s two goaltenders as it reached the WHL final last season, was killed in a car crash in the early hours of Dec. 6 in Calgary. . . . The Oil Kings set a franchise record with 22 shots in the third period but still had their franchise-record four-game home winning streak halted. . . . Lethbridge G Michael Tadjdeh stopped 35 shots in just his fourth start. He is 4-0. . . . LW Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist as the host Kelowna Rockets dumped the Chilliwack Bruins, 5-2. Benn leads the WHL with 24 goals. D Aaron Borejko, a 17-year-old freshman from Edmonton, scored his first WHL goal for Kelowna. Chilliwack G Lucas Gore stopped 23 shots as he returned form a shoulder injury. The Bruins led this one 1-0 when C Kevin Sundher scored in the first period to end a Chilliwack goalless drought of 184 minutes 45 seconds against the Rockets. Kelowna is 4-0 against the Bruins this season with three of those games having ended in shutouts. . . . The Rockets have won seven of their last eight games. . . . Chilliwack has lost seven in a row. . . . Kelowna prospect Luke Moffatt, the second overall pick in the 2007 bantam draft, had two goals to help the U.S. National under-17 team beat the host Marquette Rangers, 4-2, on Saturday. Moffatt has committed to attend the U of Michigan. . . .

In the BCHL, Shawn Mullin, over at smokeeatersblog.blogspot.com, reported earlier this week that the Trail Smoke Eaters have agreed to terms with GM/head coach Jim Ingram on a three-year contract extension. Ingram’s two-year deal was to have ended after this season. Ingram took over from Tim Kehler when he left to join the Swift Current Broncos as their assistant coach under Dean Chynoweth.
