Tuesday . . .

The WHL has suspended Tri-City Americans D Tyler Schmidt for one game after he took a clipping major and game misconduct for a hit on F Kyle Beach of the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday night. . . . Schmidt will sit out the Americans’ playoff opener against the Chilliwack Bruins on Friday night. . . . Beach, who was on crutches after Saturday’s game, didn’t play Saturday when the Chiefs beat the visiting Everett Silvertips, 3-2. The Chiefs have said he will re-evaluated on Wednesday.
---
The Everett Silvertips have signed F Jordyn Boyd, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft. Boyd, the younger brother of Nashville Predators F Dustin Boyd, who played for the Moose Jaw Warriors (2002-06), played with the midget AAA Winnipeg Hawks. He had 62 points, including 27 goals.

Former NHL head coach Guy Carbonneau will be the head coach of the Canadian team that plays in the IIHF U-18 world championship tournament in Belarus, April 13-23. . . . The assistant coaches will be Rob Sumner of the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds and George Burnett, the GM/head coach of the OHL’s Belleville Bulls. . . . Canada’s roster will comprise players from CHL teams that didn’t make the playoffs or lose out in the first round. . . . The tournament will be played in Minsk and Bobruisk.
---
The WHL will hold is draft lottery on Wednesday morning in Calgary. The six no playoff teams will take part, with no team able to move up more than two spots. That means the Prince George Cougars, Edmonton Oil Kings and Lethbridge Hurricanes have a shot at the first overall pick. The WHL uses a weighted lottery system. Here are the teams involved and the number of balls each will have:
Prince George, six.
Edmonton, five.
Lethbridge, four.
Seattle, three.
Regina, two.
Prince Albert, one.
The bantam draft is scheduled for April 29 in Edmonton.

I had occasion to drive to Kelowna on Tuesday afternoon. And there, just on the northern edge of the Kelowna airport, was a jet carrying the logos of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. . . . The Winged Wheelers are in Kelowna for a couple of days as they are between games in their NHL schedule. GM Ken Holland, who is from Vernon, which is just up the road from Kelowna, decided to take his club to Kelowna for a couple of days of R and R. They also will hold two practices and help out a food bank while they’re there. . . . There’s more on the Red Wings right here.
