Has mumps virus found Pats? ... Broncos win in OT. Again ... Winterhawks back in it


The Regina Pats are awaiting the results of tests on F Filip Ahl to learn whether the mumps virus has found them.

Ahl missed his third straight playoff game on Tuesday night — the Pats dropped a 5-4 decision to the Broncos in Swift Current in a game that went to triple OT.
Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post reported after Monday’s Game 3 that Ahl is “undergoing tests for the mumps and won’t be available before Friday’s Game 5.”
Ahl, a 19-year-old freshman from Jonkoping, Sweden, was a fourth-round selection by the Ottawa Senators in the 2015 NHL draft. He had 48 points, including 28 goals, in 54 games with the Pats this season.
The Brandon Wheat Kings, Medicine Hat Tigers, Swift Current Broncos, Victoria Royals and Kamloops Blazers all have had players, coaches or others associated with them impacted by the mumps virus.
The Seattle Thunderbirds revealed early in March that F Mathew Barzal was being tested. But they never released the results of those tests. When Barzal ended up being out for a month, speculation arose that he actually had mononucleosis. The Thunderbirds have only said that Barzal, at the time, had an “illness.”

MORE ON THE MOVE: D Chaz Reddekopp of the Victoria Royals has joined the Ontario Reign, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. A seventh-round pick in the 2015 NHL draft, Reddekopp had 10 goals and 33 assists in 51 games this season. He suffered a broken foot while blocking a shot late in the season and missed a chunk of games. . . . D Josh Anderson of the Prince George Cougars will finish the season with the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage, which is associated with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. This season, his third in the WHL, Anderson had 11 points, three of them goals, in 69 games. He was a third-round selection by Colorado in the NHL’s 2016 draft.

The Kamloops Blazers have signed D Sean Strange, who was a 10th-round selection in the 2015 WHL bantam draft. Strange, who turned 17 on Jan. 25, is from Saanich, B.C., and has played the past two seasons with the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. This season, he had four goals and 12 assists in 39 games.

F Graham Millar, who completed his junior eligibility this season, will attend UBC in Vancouver and play for the Thunderbirds next season. Millar, from Penticton, split this season between the Everett Silvertips and Edmonton Oil Kings, totalling 30 points, including 12 goals, in 48 games. . . . In 249 regular-season WHL games, he put up 97 points, 47 of them goals.

 Danton Cole is the new head coach of the Michigan State Spartans. Cole, 50, has spent the past seven seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. . . . Cole has been coaching for 18 seasons. . . . A Michigan native, he played at Michigan State before going on to a pro career that included a Stanley Cup championship with the 1994-95 New Jersey Devils. . . . Cole replaces Tom Anastos, who had a 78-122-24 record over six seasons.

The Thunderbirds swept the Tri-City Americans from a first-round series and now are on the verge of doing the same with the Silvertips. . . . Seattle has done this with Carl Stankowski in goal, after Rylan Toth, who played in 58 regular-season games and led all WHL goaltenders in victories (36), was taken out by an undisclosed injury. . . . Stankowski, a Calgarian who turned 17 on March 9, is 7-0 in the playoffs, after going 3-0-1 in the regular season. . . . The Thunderbirds scored the game’s first three goals, only to have the Silvertips get the next four. . . . Seattle took that 3-0 lead on goals from F Keegan Kolesar (4), at 12:35 of the first period, F Nolan Volcan (3), at 0:32 of the second period and F Alexander True (4), at 3:33. . . . D Aaron Irving (2) got the visitors on the scoreboard at 7:22, with F Eetu Tuulolo getting them to within a goal, on a PP, at 9:41. . . . F Dominic Zwerger (3) tied the score, on a PP, at 13:29, and Tuulolo (6) put Everett out front, at 14:37. . . . Barzal, who finished with two goals and an assist, got Seattle back into a tie at 4:23 of the third period. . . . Zwerger also had two assists for Everett, with Tuulola adding one. . . . Regina Pats. . . . This was the third OT game of the series. The Broncos won Game 1, 2-1, in Regina on Thursday and then beat the visiting Pats, 2-1, on Monday night. . . . The Broncos, who finished third in the East Division, lead the series, 3-1, and can eliminate the Pats, who finished atop the WHL’s overall standings, on Friday night in Regina. . . . Last night, Broncos F Ryley Lindgren broke a 3-3 tie with 2:25 left in the third period, but the Pats tied it when F Dawson Leedahl scored his fourth goal of the game at 19:39 with G Tyler Brown on the bench for an extra attacker. . . . Leedahl had given the Pats a 2-0 first-period lead with goals at 9:10, on a PP, and 15:00. . . . The Broncos pulled even on second period goals from Lindgren, at 15:30, and D Artyom Minulin (1), at 19:42. . . . Lindgren also had two assists for a four-point game. . . . Leedahl put the Pats ahead at 4:12 of the third period. . . . Swift Current then took the lead on goals from F Tyler Steenbergen (8), at 6:19, and Lindgren (8). . . . Leedahl forced OT with his eighth goal. . . . Gawdin won it with his fourth goal of the playoffs, the PP score coming at 9:54 of the third extra period. . . . F Joachim Blichfeld (4) gave Portland the lead at 5:29 of the second period, on a PP, with D Caleb Jones (1) adding a goal at 16:41 and F Skyler McKenzie getting his fourth goal, shorthanded, at 19:03. . . . Medicine Hat grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals from F James Hamblin (2), at 12:27 of the first period, and F Mark Rassell (5), at 8:39 of the second. . . . Lethbridge got to within a goal when F Jordy Bellerive (3) scored at 12:13 of the second period and F Giorgio Estephan tied it, on a PP, just 1:04 later. . . . F Tyler Wong’s seventh goal, on a PP, gave the Hurricanes the lead, at 4:04 of the third period. . . . Estephan provided insurance with his seventh goal at 11:28, and D Brennan Menell (4) got the empty-netter at 18:58. . . . Estephan also had an assist for a three-point night. He has seven points, including five goals, in his past two games. . . . Menell had two assists and Wong one for Lethbridge. . . . Hamblin had an assist for the Tigers. . . . Patrick off Canada's roster . . . Silvertips add goaltender . . . Want the book on Wheat Kings?

D Jonathan Harty (Everett, 2004-08) has signed a contract for the rest of this season with Heilbronner Falken (Germany, DEL2). This season, with Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia, Erste Bank Liga), he had five goals and eight assists in 23 games.

In news that hardly ranks as surprising, Hockey Canada announced Monday night that F Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings won’t be taking part in the national junior team’s selection camp that opens Sunday in Blainville, Que.
Patrick, who still is the consensus No. 1 pick for the NHL’s 2017 draft, hasn’t played since Oct. 11 and hasn’t been medically cleared to attend the camp. He underwent sports hernia surgery in July and is believed to have incurred some difficulties relating to that surgery.
According to Hockey Canada, there won’t be a roster replacement for Patrick, who was the WHL’s playoff MVP as he lead the Wheat Kings to the 2016 Ed Chynoweth Cup. Without Patrick, Canada’s selection camp roster will include 18 forwards.

The Regina Pats could have as many as four players involved in the 2017 World Junior Championship when it opens in Toronto and Montreal on Boxing Day.
F Filip Ahl was named Monday to Team Sweden’s preliminary roster. Ahl and John Dahlstrom of the Medicine Hat Tigers join 13 other forwards selected to the roster.
Last week, the Pats had forwards Sam Steel and Austin Wagner named to the Canadian national junior team’s selection camp roster, while D Sergey Zborovskiy is on Team Russia’s preliminary roster.
The tournament runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5. The The Pats will return from their Christmas break to play the visiting Brandon on Wheat Kings on Dec. 27. Counting that game, Regina is to play seven games from Dec. 27 through Jan. 7.
Five other players showed up on preliminary rosters on Monday, three of them with Team Denmark.
Lasse Petersen of the Red Deer Rebels is one of six goaltenders on Denmark’s roster. He is joined by forwards Joachim Blichfeld of the Portland Winterhawks and Alexander True of the Seattle Thunderbirds. Denmark’s roster includes 22 forwards.
Juuso Välimäki of the Tri-City Americans is one of 10 defencemen on Team Finland’s preliminary roster.
Caleb Jones of the Portland Winterhawks is one of eight defencemen on Team USA’s preliminary roster. He is the only WHL player on that roster.

D Juuso Välimäki has left the Tri-City Americans for a couple of days as he has been invited to take part in Independence Day celebrations in Helsinki today (Tuesday). Välimäki was the captain of the Finnish team that won the IIHF’s U-18 world championship in Grand Forks, N.D., in April. . . . Independence Day in Finland celebrates accomplishments of its citizens around the world. About 1,800 guests will join President Sauli Niinistö and his wife, Jenni Haukio, in Helsinki.

DORRIN LUDING
The Everett Silvertips have acquired G Dorrin Luding, 17, from the Saskatoon Blades for a sixth-round selection in the 2019 bantam draft. From Prince George, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Luding is 4-4-0, 2.93 with the Valley West Hawks of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Saskatoon picked him in the third round of the 2014 bantam draft. . . . Luding has been added to Everett's roster. . . . Everett GM Garry Davidson explained the trade in a news release: “As we’re anticipating Carter Hart’s potential absence with commitments to Hockey Canada for the upcoming World Junior Championship, the move to acquire Dorrin helps address an immediate need for goaltending depth with our current roster, imperative in the oncoming weeks.” . . . Hart could miss as many as 11 games if he makes Team Canada’s roster. With him gone, it would appear that the Silvertips will go with sophomore Mario Petit and Luding. This season, in five appearances, Petit is 4-0-1, 2.45, .916.

D Brendan Guhle of the Prince George Cougars played his second game in three days with the NHL’s

Buffalo Sabres on Monday. The Sabres dropped a 3-2 OT decision to the Capitals in Washington.
Guhle’s ice time was 16 minutes 48 seconds. He had three hits and four blocked shots, with no shots on goal. The Sabres dressed six defencemen; Guhle had more ice time than two of them.
Guhle only saw five seconds of PP time but head coach Dan Bylsma admits that he may give him a shot on the team’s second PP unit.
Guhle went to Buffalo under emergency recall regulations. The Sabres have four defencemen injured — Zach Bogosian (knee), Josh Gorges (broken foot), Dmitri Kulikov (undisclosed) and Taylor Fedun (undisclosed) — so Prince George shouldn’t hold its breath waiting for Guhle’s return.
The Sabres had D Erik Bergdoerfer up from the AHL’s Rochester Americans and he made his NHL debut, the 11th defenceman dressed by Buffalo this season.
The Sabres are back on the ice tonight (Tuesday) as they play host to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Brandon Wheat Kings are celebrating their 50th anniversary season in the WHL. In conjunction with that, they are publishing a book: Brandon Wheat Kings — The First 50 Years in the WHL. . . . According to a news release, the 124-page soft cover book provides “a look back at the teams and players of Manitoba’s major junior franchise.” . . . From the news release: “The book, which highlights the club’s history, team and player photos and detailed stats, will go on sale later this week at the BWK Team Store located at the Keystone Centre as well as online at wheatkings.com. . . . Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Wheat Kings’ Education Fund.” . . . The book will set you back $29.99, which includes all taxes.

The Denver Post reported Monday morning that a coroner has revealed that former Kootenay Ice F Marek Svatos had codeine, morphine and the anti-anxiety medication Xanax in his system when he died on Nov. 5 in Lone Tree, Colo., near Denver. . . . Svatos, a Slovakian, was 34. . . . Tom McGhee of the Post wrote that Svatos “had a history of heroin use and had gone through drug rehabilitation, according to the coroner’s report. He also had suspected depression, prior suicidal ideation, and ‘recent life stressors.’ ” . . . The report also said that there was drug paraphernalia at the scene of Svatos’s death. . . . AJHLJeff Richards has resigned as general manager and head coach of the AJHL’s Calgary Mustangs. According to a news release from the Mustangs, Richards resigned for “personal reasons . . . Later Monday, the Mustangs announced they had signed Tyler Drader as head coach. He had been the head coach of the midget AAA Calgary Northstars. . . . Then the Mustangs went out and beat the visiting Camrose Kodiaks, 2-1, to run their winning streak to two games. They beat the host Grande Prairie Storm, 5-3, on Saturday night. . . . The Mustangs (5-24-1) have the AJHL’s poorest record. . . . Richards stepped in as head coach just over a year ago after the team fired Chad Allen.

Chiefs, Rockets swing deal . . . Four suspensions finalized . . . Jeannot ruins Edmonton comeback




The Spokane Chiefs got a bit older on Monday; the Kelowna Rockets got younger.
In a one-for-one exchange, the Chiefs got F Tanner Wishnowski, 19, for F Colum McGauley, 16.
Wishnowski, a list player from Oakbank, Man., has a goal and an assist in 10 games in his sophomore season. As a freshman, he put up seven goals and six assists in 54 games.
He is expected to join his new team in time for a game against the visiting Everett Silvertips tonight (Tuesday).
McGauley was a fourth-round pick by Spokane in the 2015 WHL bantam draft. He is from Nelson, B.C., and is playing for the junior B Nelson Leafs of the Kootenay Junior International Hockey League. Last season, he had three goals and 15 assists in 39 games with the midget AAA Notre Dame Hounds, who play out of Wilcox, Sask.

The Vancouver Giants have added D Jeff Rayman, 20, to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Tri-City Americans. They placed him on waivers last week after acquiring G Rylan Parenteau, 20, from the Prince Albert Raiders. . . . The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Rayman, from Fernie, B.C., had a goal and seven assists in 86 games over two seasons (2013-15) with the Spokane Chiefs. He had three goals and two assists in 54 games with the Americans last season, and was pointless in seven games this season. . . . With the Giants, he joins F Thomas Foster and Russian D Dmitry Osipov as the 20-year-olds. . . . The Giants, who have won four in a row, all on the road, next play Wednesday when the Saskatoon Blades come calling to Langley, B.C.

The Spokane Chiefs will be without F Hudson Elynuik when they play host to the Everett Silvertips tonight. He drew a three-game suspension after taking a charging major and game misconduct for a hit on Silvertips F Devon Skoleski in Everett on Friday night. Elynuik has missed one game. He also will miss a game on Friday when the Chiefs open an East Division swing against the Regina Pats. Elynuik will be eligible to return on Saturday in Brandon against the Wheat Kings.
The WHL also firmed up suspensions to a pair of Vancouver Giants. F Johnny Wesley was given a one-game suspension for a charging major and game misconduct in a game against the host Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday, while D Darian Skeoch was given one game after he took a charging major and game misconduct in a game against the host Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday. . . . Wesley has served his suspension. Skeoch won’t play tonight against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

F Chad Butcher of the Medicine Hat Tigers has been suspended for three games. He was hit under supplemental discipline after an unpenalized incident during a 7-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Friday. Butcher has missed one game and won’t play in a home-and-home Wednesday-Friday series with the Kootenay Ice.
The Hitmen asked for supplemental discipline, claiming that Butcher had slashed D Jake Bean, who apparently was left with a broken finger. The Hitmen are saying that he is out week-to-week.
“I watched the play and I’ve been slashed a lot harder than that,” Tigers F Steve Owre told Ryan McCracken of the Medicine Hat News.“It’s the league’s decision and we’re pretty biased on this side but, I think if you watch it, it was just a hockey play.”
Shaun Clouston, the Tigers’ GM/head coach, told McCracken: “It wasn’t called a penalty. It was kind of a one-handed slash . . . I believe it’s going to be very short because there was no intent. The ref on the ice was in real good position and didn’t call it, so we’re very optimistic it will just be the one game.”
So much for optimism . . . . three games it is.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated convened a media panel and discussed a number of goings-on involving the NHL. One of the questions he asked: What rule — in game or of the greater league — would you get rid of and why.
Sean McIndoe, a writer with Vice Sports, Sportsnet and The Hockey News replied:
“The loser point. It’s completely ridiculous that this league still rewards teams for losing. The rule made a small amount of success when it was introduced in 1999, because the league felt they needed to discourage teams from playing for the tie in overtime. But since ties were eliminated with the introduction of the shootout, that reason doesn’t exist anymore. Yet we’re still stuck with this thing. The league tries to justify it by claiming that the loser point makes playoff races closer, but that’s simply not true. All it really accomplishes is artificially inflating the standings and making everyone’s record look better. Which, of course, is the whole point of the rule. GMs love it, because every year roughly 80% of the league gets to be over .500 in terms of points percentage. That’s completely absurd and makes a mockery of the integrity of the standings, but if you can tell your owner that you had a winning record even though you lost 45 games then you might get to keep your job. It’s a confidence scam, nothing more, and it’s embarrassing that we still have it.
“Even worse, the practical effect of the rule is that teams are encouraged to play for a tie in regulation. Which they do, especially as the season goes on. In every other sport, the end of a deadlocked game is edge-of-your-seat time, but in the NHL it’s when everyone shuts down and tries to run out of the clock so that the magic bonus point fairy will arrive. At some point, years down the road, we’re going to get rid of this thing. And then future generations will look back at the record books and wonder why the standings were all screwed up for decades and everyone was just OK with it.”

The Prince Albert Raiders are down to two goaltenders after dropping Curtis Meger, 18, from their roster. He is expected to join the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins. Meger, from Regina, didn’t get into any games with the Raiders, who now will go with Ian Scott, 17, and Nick Sanders, 18, as their goaltenders. . . . 
The MJHL’s Winkler Flyers have acquired the junior A rights to G Cole Kehler, who will be 19 on Dec. 17, and future considerations from the Swan Valley Stampeders for G Connor Slip, 20, and F Jason Cohan, 20. . . . Kehler, who is 6-1-0, 2.57, .913 with the Portland Winterhawks, is from Altona, Man., which is about a 30-minute drive from Winkler. It could be that Ken Pearson, the Flyers’ GM/head coach, is looking ahead to next season and thinking that maybe, just maybe, Kehler will be available as a 20-year-old. . . .
Portland D Caleb Jones has a shootout winner and an OT winner in the Winterhawks’ last two games. The OT goal was the third of his career, leaving him one away from the franchise record that is shared by Nino Niederreiter, Todd Robinson and Ken Yaremchuk.

WHL suspends four players . . . Silvertips win fourth in five nights . . . Broncos open B.C. trek with win



The WHL’s department of justice slapped four players following Friday night games.
F Tanner Jeannot of the Moose Jaw Warriors drew a one-game suspension for a boarding major and game misconduct he took in a 6-4 loss to the Rebels in Red Deer. . . . D Alexander Alexeyev, who was hit on the play, wasn’t injured.
F Hudson Elynuik of the Spokane Chiefs, F Johnny Wesley of the Vancouver Giants and F Chad Butcher of the Medicine Hat Tigers all drew TBD suspensions.
Elynuik was hit with a charging major and game misconduct during a 4-3 OT loss to the visiting Everett Silvertips. That was for a hit on Everett F Devon Skoleski in the third period. Skoleski didn’t play last night against the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds.
Wesley was given a headshot major and game misconduct during Vancouver’s 4-3 OT victory over the Hurricanes in Lethbridge.
The WHL chose to suspend Butcher for something that happened in a 7-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen. That suspension comes under supplemental decision, meaning that the Hitmen must have filed video and asked the WHL to take a look at whatever happened.

D Connor Clouston, 20, has joined the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers. He made his debut on Saturday night in a 7-2 loss to the host Chilliwack Chiefs. . . . Clouston was waived last week by the Medicine Hat Tigers as they got down to three 20-year-olds. . . . A native of Medicine Hat, he was a third-round pick by the Kamloops Blazers in the 2011 bantam draft. He split 158 regular-season WHL games between the Blazers, Moose Jaw Warriors and the Tigers. He had three goals and eight assists.

At Everett, the Silvertips scored the game’s first three goals and hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds. . . . Everett (8-1-1) has won four in a row. The Silvertips played four games in
five nights, winning them all and outscoring the opposition, 16-9. . . . Seattle (2-4-1) has lost three straight (0-2-1). . . . F Bryce Kindopp opened the scoring at 4:14 of the first period as Everett scored first for the ninth time in 10 games. . . . F Riley Sutter scored Everett’s other two goals, both via the PP, at 10:00 and 11:55 of the first period. . . . Sutter, who had one goal and three assists in 31 games last season, has four goals and three assists in 10 games this season. . . . F Sami Moilanen, at 14:09 of the first, and D Turner Ottenbreit, at 18:26 of the third, scored for Seattle. . . . Ottenbreit also had an assist. . . . G Carter Hart blocked 23 shots for the winners, while Rylan Toth turned aside 20 for Seattle. . . . Everett was 2-5 on the PP; Seattle was 1-8. . . . With Seattle having four 20-year-olds on its roster, one must be scratched every game. This time, it was F Cavin Leth. F Mathew Barzal, 19, who is eligible to return to Seattle, made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders last night. He played 10 minutes 10 seconds (16 shifts), including 1:02 on the PP. He was pointless, but took three minor penalties and won two of four faceoffs in a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals. One of the minors was for playing the puck while in the penalty box. At Kelowna, the Swift Current Broncos scored three PP goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Rockets. . . . This was the opener of a B.C. Division swing for the Broncos (7-2-1). They are 5-0-1 in
their last six games. . . . The Rockets slid to 3-7-0, including three straight losses. The visiting Saskatoon Blades beat them 4-2 on Friday nigiht. . . . The Broncos took over this game with three goals in the first 12:17 of the second period. . . . F Aleksi Heponiemi got his third goal 13 seconds into the period, with D Colby Sissons scoring on a PP at 7:44 and F Tyler Steenbergen getting his sixth goal, on another PP, at 12:17. . . . Steenbergen later added an empty-netter. . . . F Lane Pederson had two assists for the visitors, with Sissons, F Glenn Gawdin and Heponiemi each getting a goal and an assist. . . . The Hurricanes actually led this one 2-0 in the second period, with the Pats then scoring seven straight goals. . . .
