Bestwick: WHL team guaranteed if vote is YES ... Red-hot Ingram blanks Oil Kings ... Rebels end drought


F J.T. Barnett (Vancouver, Kamloops, Everett, Kelowna, 2008-13) has been released by mutual agreement by Timrå (Sweden, Allsvenskan). He was pointless in two games there. Earlier this season, he was pointless in one game with CSKA Moscow (Russia, KHL), had seven goals and three assists in 24 games with CSKA farm team Zvezda Chekhov (Russia, Vysshaya Liga); and was pointless in three games with Amur Khabarovsk (Russia, KHL). . . .
G Ville Kolppanen (Lethbridge, 2009-10) has been released by Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk (Russia, KHL). In 30 games, he was 2.18 and .917 SP. Kolppanen had one year left on his contract with Nizhnekamsk and was one of 10 Nizhnekamsk players released Tuesday. . . . The KHL regular season ended Sunday and Nizhnekamsk finished out of the playoffs.

 Bill Bestwick, a Nanaimo city councillor, has told a local newspaper that the Vancouver Island city will have a WHL franchise if taxpayers vote YES for a new arena in a March 11 referendum.
According to Greg Sakaki of the Nanaimo News Bulletin, Bestwick told the newspaper that the arrival of a WHL franchise is a “100 per cent” certainty if the vote is yes.
Here is the question that is being asked via the referendum:
“Are you in favour of the City of Nanaimo Council adopting Loan Authorization Bylaw 2017 No. 7237 which will authorize Council to borrow a sum not exceeding $80,000,000, repayable over a period of no more than 20 years, for the development and construction of an event centre that will include an ice arena and other related entertainment, cultural and recreation facilities?”
Sakaki writes:
“Coun. Bill Bestwick told the News Bulletin last week that it’s a ‘100 per cent’ certainty that the WHL will be coming to town if the referendum passes. Hockey hasn’t been a major talking point, however, because the municipality can’t reveal details of the league’s dealings with a privately owned club, reportedly the Cranbrook-based Kootenay Ice. Kim Fowler, Nanaimo’s chief sustainability officer, said that the WHL was leading those negotiations and that the city was working on a memorandum of understanding with the league.”
Bestwick is a longtime former BCHL coach who spent 12 seasons (1999-2012) as GM/head coach of the Nanaimo Clippers. These days, he is a part-time amateur scout for the NHL’s St. Louis Blues.
When Sakaki asked for a response from the WHL, he got a prepared statement from commissioner Ron Robison, stating that “should the City of Nanaimo approve the construction of a new facility which meets WHL standards, the WHL will seek the necessary approvals to deliver a WHL team either through relocation of an existing franchise or expansion.”
It has been common knowledge for a while now that the Ice will end up playing out of the Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo next season should the referendum pass. A WHL team likely would spend three seasons in the 3,000-seat facility, with a new building expected to be ready for 2019-20.
Taking Note was told last month that the WHL is preparing two schedules for 2016-17 — one of those features 22 teams, including Nanaimo; the other features the same 22 cities that are in the league today.
The arrival of a WHL franchise would result in the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers relocating. The Clippers play out of the Frank Crane Arena.

The Kamloops Blazers had all of their coaches on hand Tuesday night as they skated to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.
By the start of the third period, only goaltending coach Dan De Palma wasn’t behind the Kamloops
bench.
The Blazers start home games with head coach Don Hay and lead assistant Mike Needham at the bench. Terry Bangen, a veteran coach, joins them to start the second period.
Chris Murray, who played with the Blazers before going on to skate in the NHL, is a local firefighter who also is on the Kamloops coaching staff. When he isn’t at work, he joins the others behind the bench for the third period.
When Murray isn’t available, De Palma frequently spends the third period at the bench.
Which leads us to this question: Is there another team in junior hockey that sometimes has four coaches at the bench?

D Luke Gallagher has been added to the Spokane Chiefs’ roster for the remainder of this season. Gallagher, 16, is from Mead, Wash., and had been playing for the junior B Spokane Braves of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. He had 37 points, including 13 goals, in 45 games with the Braves. . . Prior to that, he spent two seasons at the EDGE school in Calgary. . . . He was selected by the Chiefs in the eighth round of the 2015 WHL bantam draft. . . . The Chiefs now are carrying three 2000-born defencemen, with Gallagher joining Ty Smith, a first-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft, and Matt Leduc, who was selected in the second round.

The WHL has suspended F Kolby Johnson of the Prince Albert Raiders for three games after he took a charging major and game misconduct for a hit on F Orrin Centazzo of the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday night. Everett won the game, 3-1. . . . Centazzo didn’t play in a 3-2 OT victory over the Broncos in Swift Current on Saturday. He is listed as having an upper-body injury and being out month-to-month on the WHL roster report that was released Tuesday. . . . Johnson has served two games of that suspension and will miss Friday’s game against the host Saskatoon Blades. He will be eligible to return for the rematch on Saturday in Prince Albert. . . . The Raiders also were fined $500 “for inadequate security at officials’ exit” during that game against Everett. You are left to speculate which member, or members, of the Raiders organization stopped to say “Howdy” to the officials after the game.

The Saskatoon Blades have returned F Tyler Lees to the midget AAA Regina Pats Canadians. Lees, 16, has one goal in seven games with the Blades this season. He played four games with the Blades last week, scoring his first WHL goal on Saturday in a 6-2 loss to the host Lethbridge Hurricanes. . . . Lees was a fifth-round selection by the Blades in the 2015 bantam draft. . . . The Blades also have brought in Payton McIsaac, 16, to serve as their seventh defenceman for now. He had been playing for the midget AAA Fort Saskatchewan Rangers, whose season has ended. From Fort Saskatchewan, he was a second-round selection in the 2015 bantam draft.

 F Zdeněk Bahenský (Saskatoon, 2004-06) has signed a tryout contract with Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic, Extraliga). This season, with Nové Zámky (Slovakia, Extraliga), he had two goals and nine assists in 22 games. He was released on Dec. 31.

 The Calgary Hitmen, having lost G Cody Porter indefinitely with an undisclosed injury, have added G Trevor Martin, 20, to their roster. Martin, from Ardrossan, Alta., played three games with the Red Deer Rebels this season, three with the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors and five with the QMJHL’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar. . . . A seventh-round pick by the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL bantam draft, he has WHL experience, having played 19 games with the Saskatoon Blades in 2014-15 (3-10-2, 4.16, .886) and 38 with the Rebels in 2015-16 (18-8-2, 2.63, .911). . . . Last season, Martin and the Rebels eliminated the Hitmen from the playoffs, winning a first-round series in five games. Martin was 4-1, 2.20, .927. . . . Martin was on the bench backing up Kyle Dumba on Tuesday night as the Hitmen dropped a 5-4 OT decision to the Blades in Saskatoon. . . . Porter was injured on Friday during a 6-2 loss to the Pats in Regina.

The Brandon Wheat Kings have dropped D Blake Jameson, 18, from their roster and he will join the MJHL’s Swan Valley Stampeders. Jameson was pointless in 27 games with the Wheat Kings this season. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder played last season with the midget AAA Southwest Cougars. . . . Jameson, who is from Brandon, was a fourth-round pick by the Victoria Royals in the 2013 bantam draft.
The Wheat Kings also have removed D Zach Wytinck, 17, and F Garrett Armour, 19, from their roster. Wytinck, from Glenboro, Man., had one assist in 29 games with Brandon, while Armour, from Winnipeg, had four assists in 41 games. Wytinck was in his first WHL season; Armour played with the Saskatoon Blades in 2014-15 and was in his second season with Brandon. Armour has two goals and 15 assists in 142 career regular-season games.

The Red Deer Rebels have signed F Chris Douglas, 16, and added him to their roster. Douglas, from Richmond, B.C., had 13 goals and 24 assists in 26 games with the Greater Vancouver Canadians of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. . . . The Rebels also have dropped F Quinn Martin, 17, from their roster. A native of Santa Fe, N.M., Martin was pointless in 20 games with Red Deer.

So you want to be a junior hockey player, do you? Best purchase a hardy suitcase. . . . Consider the case of D Carter Cochrane, who is from Kamloops and has played 43 games in the WHL (Everett Silvertips, 33; Tri-City Americans, 9; Vancouver Giants, 1). . . . On Tuesday, Cochrane, 20, was involved in a BCHL trade, moving from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks to the Trail Smoke Eaters. . . . When he plays his first game for Trail, it will mark his 10th junior team since the start of 2011-12 when he got a taste with the junior B Kamloops Storm and Princeton Posse of the Kootenay International Junior League. . . . Since then, Cochrane has played for the KIJHL’s Golden Rockets, the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs, Everett, Tri-City, Chilliwack again, the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals, Vancouver, Salmon Arm and now Trail.

In the course of more than 40 years in the newspaper business, I developed a pretty thick skin and, in time, I learned to ignore the yahoos who troll the waters of social media.
But I know only too well how hard it can be on family members when someone close to them comes under attack.
That is the focus of the top of this week’s edition of 30 Thoughts, the musings of Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Following the championship game at the 2017 World Junior Championship, Friedman chatted with Sheehan Desjardins, 21, whose father, Willie, now is the head coach of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. Willie, one of the most decent people you could ever hope to meet, was on Team Canada’s coaching staff in 2009 when it won gold in Ottawa and again in 2010 when it lost in OT to Team USA in the final in Saskatoon.
You have to read this to understand the highs and lows that a family lives through in these situations. It is amazing and the lows are especially brutal, mostly thanks to a few non-thinkers in our midst, you know, the ones who are with Team Canada win or . . . win.

The Swift Current Broncos have dropped F Brandan Arnold, 19, from their roster and he will join the SJHL’s Nipawin Hawks. From Dodsland, Sask., the 5-foot-8, 175-pound Arnold had two goals and four assists in 27 games with the Broncos. Last season, as a freshman, he had two goals and an assist in 42 games. . . . He was a seventh-round selection in the 2012 bantam draft.

Ty Pozzobon, a Canadian bull-riding champion, was found dead on Monday afternoon near his hometown of Merritt, B.C. . . . “No cause of death was released by Merritt RCMP,” writes Postmedia’s Gord McIntyre, “but they do not consider the death to be suspicious and have passed along the case to the B.C. Coroners Service.” . . . Pozzobon had incurred multiple concussions during his career. . . . “It’s important that people know about the implications of head injuries as a result of concussions,” his mother, Leanne, said. . . . D Jonathan Harty (Everett, 2004-08) has signed a contract for the rest of this season with Heilbronner Falken (Germany, DEL2). This season, with Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia, Erste Bank Liga), he had five goals and eight assists in 23 games.

NOLAN PATRICK
In news that hardly ranks as surprising, Hockey Canada announced Monday night that F Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings won’t be taking part in the national junior team’s selection camp that opens Sunday in Blainville, Que.
Patrick, who still is the consensus No. 1 pick for the NHL’s 2017 draft, hasn’t played since Oct. 11 and hasn’t been medically cleared to attend the camp. He underwent sports hernia surgery in July and is believed to have incurred some difficulties relating to that surgery.
According to Hockey Canada, there won’t be a roster replacement for Patrick, who was the WHL’s playoff MVP as he lead the Wheat Kings to the 2016 Ed Chynoweth Cup. Without Patrick, Canada’s selection camp roster will include 18 forwards.

The Regina Pats could have as many as four players involved in the 2017 World Junior Championship when it opens in Toronto and Montreal on Boxing Day.
F Filip Ahl was named Monday to Team Sweden’s preliminary roster. Ahl and John Dahlstrom of the Medicine Hat Tigers join 13 other forwards selected to the roster.
Last week, the Pats had forwards Sam Steel and Austin Wagner named to the Canadian national junior team’s selection camp roster, while D Sergey Zborovskiy is on Team Russia’s preliminary roster.
The tournament runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5. The The Pats will return from their Christmas break to play the visiting Brandon on Wheat Kings on Dec. 27. Counting that game, Regina is to play seven games from Dec. 27 through Jan. 7.
Five other players showed up on preliminary rosters on Monday, three of them with Team Denmark.
Lasse Petersen of the Red Deer Rebels is one of six goaltenders on Denmark’s roster. He is joined by forwards Joachim Blichfeld of the Portland Winterhawks and Alexander True of the Seattle Thunderbirds. Denmark’s roster includes 22 forwards.
Juuso Välimäki of the Tri-City Americans is one of 10 defencemen on Team Finland’s preliminary roster.
Caleb Jones of the Portland Winterhawks is one of eight defencemen on Team USA’s preliminary roster. He is the only WHL player on that roster.

D Juuso Välimäki has left the Tri-City Americans for a couple of days as he has been invited to take part in Independence Day celebrations in Helsinki today (Tuesday). Välimäki was the captain of the Finnish team that won the IIHF’s U-18 world championship in Grand Forks, N.D., in April. . . . Independence Day in Finland celebrates accomplishments of its citizens around the world. About 1,800 guests will join President Sauli Niinistö and his wife, Jenni Haukio, in Helsinki.

The Everett Silvertips have acquired G Dorrin Luding, 17, from the Saskatoon Blades for a sixth-round selection in the 2019 bantam draft. From Prince George, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Luding is 4-4-0, 2.93 with the Valley West Hawks of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Saskatoon picked him in the third round of the 2014 bantam draft. . . . Luding has been added to Everett's roster. . . . Everett GM Garry Davidson explained the trade in a news release: “As we’re anticipating Carter Hart’s potential absence with commitments to Hockey Canada for the upcoming World Junior Championship, the move to acquire Dorrin helps address an immediate need for goaltending depth with our current roster, imperative in the oncoming weeks.” . . . Hart could miss as many as 11 games if he makes Team Canada’s roster. With him gone, it would appear that the Silvertips will go with sophomore Mario Petit and Luding. This season, in five appearances, Petit is 4-0-1, 2.45, .916.

D Brendan Guhle of the Prince George Cougars played his second game in three days with the NHL’s

Buffalo Sabres on Monday. The Sabres dropped a 3-2 OT decision to the Capitals in Washington.
Guhle’s ice time was 16 minutes 48 seconds. He had three hits and four blocked shots, with no shots on goal. The Sabres dressed six defencemen; Guhle had more ice time than two of them.
Guhle only saw five seconds of PP time but head coach Dan Bylsma admits that he may give him a shot on the team’s second PP unit.
Guhle went to Buffalo under emergency recall regulations. The Sabres have four defencemen injured — Zach Bogosian (knee), Josh Gorges (broken foot), Dmitri Kulikov (undisclosed) and Taylor Fedun (undisclosed) — so Prince George shouldn’t hold its breath waiting for Guhle’s return.
The Sabres had D Erik Bergdoerfer up from the AHL’s Rochester Americans and he made his NHL debut, the 11th defenceman dressed by Buffalo this season.
The Sabres are back on the ice tonight (Tuesday) as they play host to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Denver Post reported Monday morning that a coroner has revealed that former Kootenay Ice F Marek Svatos had codeine, morphine and the anti-anxiety medication Xanax in his system when he died on Nov. 5 in Lone Tree, Colo., near Denver. . . . Svatos, a Slovakian, was 34. . . . Tom McGhee of the Post wrote that Svatos “had a history of heroin use and had gone through drug rehabilitation, according to the coroner’s report. He also had suspected depression, prior suicidal ideation, and ‘recent life stressors.’ ” . . . The report also said that there was drug paraphernalia at the scene of Svatos’s death. . . . AJHLJeff Richards has resigned as general manager and head coach of the AJHL’s Calgary Mustangs. According to a news release from the Mustangs, Richards resigned for “personal reasons . . . Later Monday, the Mustangs announced they had signed Tyler Drader as head coach. He had been the head coach of the midget AAA Calgary Northstars. . . . Then the Mustangs went out and beat the visiting Camrose Kodiaks, 2-1, to run their winning streak to two games. They beat the host Grande Prairie Storm, 5-3, on Saturday night. . . . The Mustangs (5-24-1) have the AJHL’s poorest record. . . . Richards stepped in as head coach just over a year ago after the team fired Chad Allen.

Brennan Tutt, who had a brief stint with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 2009-10, is one of three men in custody after what, according to the St. George, Utah, News, “is believed to be the biggest meth bust in Utah history.” . . . Tutt, 24, is from Airdrie. . . . The three were pulled over near Provo after police officers, with the help of a dog, found 236 pounds of methamphetamine, some steroids and $66,000. . . . According to The News, the meth had “an estimated wholesale value of $1.5 million and a street value of between $7 million and $15 million.” . . . The Tri-City Americans have dropped D Landon Fuller from their roster. He now is with the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Fuller, 17, is from 100 Mile House, B.C. He was pointless in one game this season. He got into two games last season and also was pointless. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Fuller was a fifth-round selection in the 2014 WHL bantam draft.
