Congratulations to longtime friend Tim Iannone, who is to be inducted into the McGill University’s Sports Hall of Fame next week. Iannone, a 42-year-old product of the Regina Pats, spent four seasons with the Redmen and left with 39 records in his hip pocket. Sheesh, he totaled 267 points, including 136 goals, in 136 games. That came after a four-year WHL career in which he had 249 points, including 125 goals, in 188 games. You would have to go some to find a player who was any smoother than Iannone, who is a better person than he ever was as a player, and he was a terrific player. Iannone, who works in the family’s shoe store in Regina, is proof that good things, indeed, happen to good people. Iannone’s wife, two daughters and parents will join him in Montreal. Enjoy the moment, Tim; you’ve earned it. And the next time I’m in Regina, I’ll be dropping by for shoes.

The WHL’s 2008-09 Guide now is available. And please allow me to thank the WHL for bring back one of the best and handiest parts of what is an invaluable addition to any hockey fan’s library. That would be the ‘All-Time WHL Player Index.’ It takes up the Guide’s last 25 pages and is well worth it. We, as a society, oftentimes don’t pay enough attention to our past; it is great to see the WHL bring back this feature to its annual Guide.

The Everett Silvertips have assigned D Brenden Stephen, 18, to the BCHL’s Quesnel Millionaires. Stephen, a 6-foot-7, 190-pounder from Vanderhoof, B.C., played in seven games with Everett last season but hadn’t dressed yet this season. . . . The move gets the Silvertips down to the roster limit of 25 players.
