The Continental Hockey League (KHL) held a draft of sorts on Monday. And, while F John Tavares of the OHL’s London Knights wasn’t selected, D Jyri Niemi of the Saskatoon Blades was taken in the second round by SKA St. Petersburg. . . . F Ondrej Roman (Spokane Chiefs) went to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in Round 1, 23rd overall. . . . F Michal Repik (Vancouver) was taken by Sibir Novosibirsk in Round 2, 27th overall. . . . Niemi was taken in the 39th slot. . . . A side note from Garth MacBeth: “Players aged 17-21 playing outside Russia were among the players eligible to be drafted. If I understand the KHL rules correctly, KHL clubs hold the rights to players taken in the draft until April 30 of the year the player turns 28 should the player not sign with his KHL team. OK!” . . . I don’t know if this draft will have any impact on operations over here, but if you want a look it’s right here.

If you’re a WHL general manager or a head coach, you don’t ever want to get dumped in the offseason between early Friday and Monday morning. Because not much happens on weekends and your picture stays on the WHL website for a long, long time. . . . If you visited the WHL website on Monday, you were greeted by the visages of an unsmiling Jeff Truitt and a smiling Chad Lang, separated only by Saskatoon Blades F Milan Kytnar. Truitt, of course, is the Moose Jaw Warriors’ new director of hockey operations. He replaces Lang, who was told Friday to take a hike.

The players who will appear include F Brayden Schenn of the Brandon Wheat Kings and F Evander Kane of the Vancouver Giants.
Also appearing will be F John Tavares of the London Knights and F Matt Duchene of the Brampton Battalion.

Major Midget League championship. . . . C Shane Danyluk, 15, is from Salmon Arm, B.C. He was the 31st selection in the 2009 bantam draft. He played for the bantam SilverBacks this season.

The Lethbridge Herald’s Dylan Purcell has an interesting piece that was on the newspaper’s website late Monday night.
It has to do with Rich Sutter and his desire to be general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
A little history: Sutter was brought into the Hurricanes’ organization in midseason by then-GM Roy Stasiuk as a consultant. Sutter was to act as a conduit between Stasiuk and head coach Michael Dyck. Of course, Stasiuk and Dyck both lost their jobs after the Hurricanes’ season was over. After Dyck was told his contract wouldn’t be renewed, Sutter went to the Herald and sliced and diced Stasiuk like a soft tomato in salsa.
And then shortly after Stasiuk was dumped, Sutter went public with his desire for the GM’s job.
Here’s what Sutter is saying now:
“I wish I could just interview for the job. I don’t want it to look like I’m out here campaigning for the job but I’m worried I might not even get a shot. I know I’m the right guy for the job. I’ve got a list of players willing to tell the hiring committee they want it to be me. I’ve got a list of references like you wouldn’t believe waiting to tell them I can do this.
“I just want a shot. I think it’s time for a Sutter to be a part of things around here.”
This kind of sounds like John Ford is looking to film an old duster, one of those movies in which John Wayne shows up as the new sheriff in town and cleans up the joint.
The problem with Sutter’s approach — and, from here, it sure sounds like he is campaigning — is that the Sutter name just doesn’t carry the cachet that it used to.
Darryl, of course, is the general manager of the Calgary Flames, who have had their problems of late. He mismanaged the salary cap and the Flames ended up dressing only 15 skaters for a game or two this season. His acquisition of F Olli Jokinen from the Phoenix Coyotes at the trade deadline turned out to be a failure. And, at season’s end, guess who’s fault it was? Yes, Sutter tied a can to head coach Mike Keenan. Who will be the Flames’ next head coach? The smart money is on Darryl Sutter.
Brent, of course, has completed two seasons as head coach of the New Jersey Devils, but has yet to get them out of the first round of the playoffs. Brent also owns the Red Deer Rebels, who have missed the playoffs three of the last four seasons.
Brian spent the 2007-08 season as head coach of the Rebels, but that was pretty much a disaster. Yes, it was a young team. But, still, it finished 21st in a 22-team league, at 18-47-4-3, and only the Portland Winter Hawks were worse. Brian did guide the Bentley, Alta., Generals to the Allan Cup, as Canadian senior AAA champions, this season, however.
While you can never question the work ethic of any of the Sutter boys, you have to wonder if something has happened to the magic that used to be there.
