Monday . . .

The Kootenay Ice dropped three players Monday and two of them – D Mike Cassivi, 17, and D Tyler Vanscourt, 17 – were on last season’s roster. Cassivi had seven points in 56 games, while Vanscourt had one goal in 29 games. . . . The Ice also reassigned D John Niebrandt, 17, who will join the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers. He is from Yorkton. . . . The Ice’s roster now is at 25, including three goaltenders and eight defencemen. D Brayden McNabb is with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

The Regina Pats got their roster down to 26 on Monday by moving four players. . . . Veteran G Linden Rowat, 20, was dropped and the Pats hope to trade him. Rowat was the Pats’ starter in 2007-08 when they won the East Division regular-season title with a 44-22-4-2 record. . . . G Derek Tendler, 17, was assigned to the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins. . . . That means the Pats will open the season with two goaltenders – sophomore Damien Ketlo, 18, and freshman Dawson Guhle, 17. . . . Also moved Monday were D Shamus Graham, 17, to the AJHL’s Drayton Valley Thunder, and F Clarke Breitkreuz, to the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers. Breitkreuz will turn 18 on Nov. 11. . . . Regina’s roster now includes nine defencemen and 15 forwards. The Pats have D Matt Delahey, D Colten Teubert, F Garrett Mitchell and F Jordan Eberle at NHL camps. . . . With Rowat gone, the Pats are down to four 20-year-olds – Delahey, F Mitch Czibere, F Brett Leffler and F Matt Strueby.

If you’re wondering whether the Tri-City Americans might be interested in Rowat, the answer, at least for the next while, is, “No.” . . . They haven’t given up on landing Alexander Pechurski, 19, who was their first pick in the CHL’s 2009 import draft. Even though he is on the early roster of Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Continental Hockey League, the Americans are holding out hope that they will be able to get clearance to have him join them. . . . The Americans also are quite happy with their three 20-year-olds – F Johnny Lazo, D Brett Plouffe and D Jarrett Toll – so might not be in a hurry to tinker with that.

F Matt Vigier, who was taken by the Moose Jaw Warriors in the fourth round of the 2009 WHL bantam draft, died Saturday after being involved in a car accident. A funeral will be held Saturday in the arena in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Man.

Czech F Radim Valchar, 20, who had 41 points in 67 games with the Portland Winter Hawks last season, may be on the move. A source indicated Monday night that the Calgary Hitmen and Lethbridge Hurricanes both have expressed interest in acquiring Valchar. At the same time, though, there are indications that he may be headed to the ECHL. . . . The Winter Hawks selected two imports in the CHL’s 2009 import draft – Swiss F Nino Niederreiter, 17, and Swedish F Jacob Berglund, who turns 18 in November, and both were impressive in the exhibition season.

Another source indicated Monday night that the Winterhawks are attempting to trade F Killian Hutt, 18, who had 35 points in 57 games last season. Hutt left the Winterhawks during training camp and went home to the Edmonton area, apparently to ponder his hockey future. Hutt suffered an offseason injury, reported to camp overweight and struggled to get into the club’s top 12 forwards.

The Red Deer Rebels reassigned F Jesse Mireau, 18, on Monday. That trimmed the Rebels’ roster to 26, including three goaltenders and seven defencemen. The Rebels have Kraymer Barnstable, 19, and Cam Gorchynski, 17, looking after the goaltending with Darcy Kuemper in camp with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. . . . The Rebels also are carrying four 20-year-olds – G Jordie Deagle, F Cody Esposito, F Nathan Green and D Cullen Morin. . . . All WHL teams must be down to a maximum of three 20-year-olds on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. MT. . . . The Red Deer Advocate reports that the Rebels are expecting F Willie Coetzee and F Landon Ferraro back from the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, with Kuemper and F Cass Mappin (Columbus Blue Jackets) due back Wednesday, and D Justin Weller (Phoenix Coyotes) expected to arrived Thursday.

The Moose Jaw Warriors reassigned two players Monday. . . . G Deven Dubyk, 18, will be joining the SJHL’s Notre Dame Hounds. He got into 35 games with the Warriors last season, going 7-15-1-0 with a 4.57 GAA. . . . The Warriors will open with veteran Jeff Bosch, 19, and freshman Brandon Glover, 17, as their goaltenders. . . . Also leaving Moose Jaw’s camp was D Paul Bonar, 18, who played 44 games with the Warriors last season. A Brandon native, he will return to the MJHL’s Swan Valley Stampeders.

The Central league's Colorado Eagles have signed D Clay Thoring (Swift Current, Vancouver, 1998-2002), who played in five games with them last season after being claimed off waivers from the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. He suffered a season-ending injury and only played the five games with Colorado. . . . Thoring played five seasons of Canadian university hockey before joining the Mudbugs last season.

The Brandon Wheat Kings trimmed two players from their roster on Monday. G Liam Liston, 16, was reassigned to the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders, while D Brett Rock, 18, was released and is expected to join the SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs. Rock was an eighth-round pick in the 2006 bantam draft. . . . The Wheat Kings’ roster contains 31 players, with six of those in NHL cames. . . . They still are carrying three goaltenders – incumbent Andrew Hayes, 19, Dalyn Flette, 19, and freshman Ty Rimmer, 17.

According to the WHL’s website, the Prince George Cougars have released D Jeff Regier, 18. The Cougars acquired Regier from the Everett Silvertips on Oct. 31, giving up RW Dale Hunt and a 2010 seventh-round bantam draft pick in the exchange. . . . Regier’s release comes a day after the Cougars acquired D Kurt Torbohm, 19, from the Kamloops Blazers for a 2011 sixth-round bantam draft pick.

The Spokane Chiefs trimmed D Eddie Friesen, 19, and G Alex Wright, 19, from their roster on Monday, leaving them with 29 players, including 10 defencemen and 17 forwards. That includes D Jared Cowen, F Tyler Johnson, F Levko Koper and F Mitch Wahl, all of whom are at NHL camps. . . . The Chiefs have three veteran players out with injuries – D Cory Baldwin (hand), F Ryan Letts (Achilles) and D Jared Spurgeon. All three of them sat out all the exhibition games.

The ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings have signed D Ryan White (Kamloops, Prince Albert, 2005-08). White, who is from Edmonton, played last season for the U of Alberta Golden Bears. He had 56 points in 176 regular-season WHL games.

The Everett Silvertips dropped three players Monday and all of them were WHL veterans. . . . F Ryan White, 18, and F Tyler Parker, 17, played for the Silvertips last season, while F Alex Poulter, 20, was picked up on waivers from the Prince George Cougars over the summer. White, who was released, is from Parker, Colo., He got into 48 games last season and had seven points. Parker, from Livermore, Calif., had six points in 44 games last season. Poulter, who is from Broomfield, Colo, had 23 points in 65 games with the Cougars last season. . . . The Silvertips now have four 20-year-olds – F Zack Dailey, F Travis Dunstall, F Shane Harper and D Colin Scherger. Everett is expected to hang on to Dailey and Harper, along with either Dunstall or Scherger.

The Portland Winterhawks have released F Jason Grecica, 19, who came over from the Moose Jaw Warriors during 2007-08. He missed last season with knee problems and didn’t get into any exhibition games this season. Grecica may be headed for the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles. . . . The Winterhawks also released D Kyle Madsen, a 17-year-old from Kitimat, B.C. He got into one exhibition game and suffered a knee injury.
